It's not that they alter it. They just fill it out more. Edit: OK it's both, it can alter or it could fill it out more. I was being specific to this example
@@mo-em1keplay an E chord with an open E on the sixth string, then play the same E chord but fret the F on the sixth string. It absolutely alters the chord
Bass is actually the base, the foundation to build on. Harmony is beautiful, that's why I love creating them the most. Both melodies can be beautiful separately, but together they create a very special dance of different quality. ✨ You made a great example of this!
@@DanielMartin-nm2ch The song is "My Favourite Things" from the musical 'The Sound of Music'. This is an acoustic cover of an otherwise predominantly vocal perforamnce.
its really impressive when the bass is melodic enough to be its own song but still compliments and supports the melody. John Paul Jones did a lot of bass work like that in Zeplin
The bass is one of the main reasons for me why the Red Hot Chili Peppers's music is interesting, especially their older stuff. Give the album "Blood sugar sex magik" a listen. Tremendous.
I play bass for my worship team at church. The only time people notice me is when I’m not there. They will say “the music sounded down today… I can’t put my finger on it…” when I come in, I have the power to make people start clapping along with the song. I can make them sway and tap their feet. As a bassist, my power of subliminal mind control is scary. The lead guitar has the flash, the drums have the boom - but the bass has the power!
As a bassist, this is a great video! It’s fascinating that the lowest note carries the most influence on a chord, and playing different notes in the bass gives the same chord a completely different feel.
For some reason a lot of people separate bass and melody when talking about songs. Sure they are separate notes but just like a choir sings 5 notes that form a chord, they are not independent from each other. The bass defines the tonal context of the chord that is formed by the melody on top of the bass note. You can try it out by choosing bass lines that would imply a completely different tonality and see how the song's mood changes.
In this case, you need the bass to give enough context for us to understand the chords. Sometimes, the bass is even kind of a part of the melody. When I make music, sometimes I can replace a note of the main melody with a note that's one or two octaves below, and it still feels complete even though the "lead" part of the melody goes silent sometimes for some lower notes, and it feels broader idk like wider. In this case, bass is not just there playing around the root notes just to fill that lower space with something cool, but it's also giving the context for the chords, and it feels like part of the melody (sometimes more, sometimes less). In this case, removing the bass removes context, structure, not just the bass part, so it's not what you think.
This song in particular really highlights how the bass can add musical context. Most of us are familiar with the song, so even when it's played the first time through without the bass, we take for granted that the first four bars of the melody are repeated note for note, but with completely different musical context. If we were listening to this brand new, without knowing this song at all, we'd be missing out on the fact that the repeated melody is not intended to be interpreted of a carbon copy. Unless we have that bassline. Another fun thing happening here is that because we're familiar with the song, we know that this song is in a minor key. We don't have to know what that means to "get" it. Music theory is all about explaining what we "get". The getting is always first, and then people develop vocabulary and taxonomy to sciencize it. And in this composition, neither the melody nor the bassline in the first four measures gives us "hints" as to major or minor, because the relative notes used are present in both. You could play an A major cord at the beginning and hold it for four bars, and it would still make sense musically. But since we're familiar with the song already, it sounds wrong.
That's so beautiful!💖 This is why I like bass, it adds depth to music and without it, it just sounds.... flat? But yeah it totally adds more feelings into the song❤🎵
It isn’t a “chord” in any definition until it has been defined by the bass note, whether it’s the root, an inversion, or a “slash” chord over something. The bass note defines the nature of the harmonic structure
This is a great way to show someone who is learning guitar the phrasing of chords. I like how you demonstrated the chord structure! Well, I mean you can hear it, lol!

Im just starting the earliest point t you can while learning the guitar in learning to play two and three note chords on Rocksmith and legit it’s the best feeling playing a chord and just feeling the insane twang a guitar can give with the low e.
My band director always described bass as the bowl, and the tenors and altos as the soup, and the high woodwinds as seasoning and whatever else you’d like in the soup lol. Without bass you’d just have messy soup, without soup you’d just have a bowl. But together you make something great
It's awesome! It's so interesting how the regular listener went from not caring about bass to still not caring but pretending they do (but at least acknowledging its obvious importance) using some very creative and magical explanations. You can show a regular listener a song with a cool bassline and they won't remember a thing about what the bass is doing, yet they know it is important. This is up for some philosophical debate lol. Thanks for sharing!
I’m new to guitar, and just that looks so simple but it’s quite hard… both remembering the notes and not hitting the wrong one, plus being fast with the other hand to press down on the right place on the right string, this alone would take lots of practice.
Though you didn’t say it outright, isolating the melody and the bass as you did is also a great way to learn how to play a fingerstyle song, as the most difficult part, at least to me, is smoothly combining the bass thumb and melodic fingers.
Really nice. What took me by surprise is that at some points, it kinda sounds like Undertale. Don't know if it's a coincidence or not, as Toby Fox likes jazz.
