Spring Mowing Very Tall & Thick Grass | Stihl FS-131 String Trimmer

- Today we're cutting an area previously cut in one of our earlier videos during the winter. A few months later, with the help of lots of rain and warm weather, this area has now become overgrown and is in need of a mow down. With the Stihl FS-131 and some TurfGro Diamond trimmer line, we were able to cut this area up efficiently.

I just broke in my new fs131 in this last weekend clearing a 3 acre lot just as thick as this. Absolutely the beast of a trimmer I've ever used, I did have to adjust the carb a bit after first three tank fulls. Worth the $$$
Just found your channel ✌ Man you give that 131 a work out 👍
Hi Tim!
I’m using what I have at the moment and slowly working my way up to new equipment.
Thank you for commenting Tim! Feels good being seen by one of the bigger channels! 😁 I hope to get up there some day too !😅
You cut the Grass Perfect! Good Job

Thank you Dorit!
Now thats a workout! 👍👍
The best workout out there! 😁

Amazing video, congratulations,
Thank you Beverly! :)
Great job! I'm exhausted just watching you. I enjoyed watching the video.
Thank you Theresa. I appreciate you taking your time to watch! 😁
Awesome video, and trimmer ,hope you're doing good
Thank you very much Agapito! I am doing very good, thanks to God!
I hope you’re doing good too my friend! :)
Nice 👌
Thank you Szymon! :)
My respects to you my friend. This is a big lot. I bet you ended up with a waist pain at the end of the day....great job.
Thank you! I normally just get sore, normally that's from the ground being uneven. When the ground is relatively flat then there is usually no pain :)
Tadinya menyemak lepas potong nampak bersih dan rapi 👍👍👍💪💪🙏🙏

Спасибо за видео ✂️🌿
Спасибо за просмотр Филиппчик! Я не знал что ты Русский! 😅
@@golovinpropertyservices конечно 👍🏼
Was suprisingly satisfying watching this after having done a lot of strimming in the past! How is it your petrol tank lasted so long? Did you refill at some point? Mine used to run out really quick then take ages to start. Cool vid.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment!
I fill my tank up to the top before I start working.
Some factors that could impact why it lasted so long was:
Different fuel tank sizes, the way the machine is running, turning it on and off, and etc.
In this case, my fuel tank generally lasts me 45-55 minutes on one fuel tank. When I run my machine I use it going full throttle which is the way the strimmer is meant to run. Some people prefer the lower RPM's which generally means half throttle, which isn't ideal for fuel consumption. In this video, I only stopped going full throttle when I needed to readjust the camera angle and whenever I needed to do some adjustments to the trimmer head, but at the times I was doing this I don't recall shutting the machine off.
I think another factor is the type of strimmer being used. This Stihl FS 131 is from 2020, one of the advantages it claims to have is good fuel efficiency, and I think it definitely meets it.
David got to ask that building looks like it from a horror movie 😜...like always enjoy watching the video
Thanks again from In the woods with the Capone’s 🇨🇦
Yes, that building is quite a feature, in the fall when things are all dried up and foggy it has quite the spooky effect.
Thank you for your continued support and for leaving your comments! :)
Great job and video. 0.105 line?! If so, wow. Any thoughts on (not) using a 3T 10” or - hopefully - 12” grass knife? Keep up the good work 💪🏼
Yes, I’m using .105 square trimmer line here. Works pretty good. I do have 2 grass blades now, but I use them in certain areas only.
is there like a technique to cut down thick grass, or just simply cut it?
There actually is. But it all depends on multiple factors too, such as: the type of trimmer, type of line, type of grass, how you want the grass cut.
Cutting grass actually requires a little more thinking then most people realize. But what are you looking to cut?
@@golovinpropertyservices I wanna cut down tall thick grass with a string trimmer
I'm currently using .0.85 line, doesn't do much
@@somthinwrong What kind of trimmer do you have and what design does the trimmer line have? Do you also know what type of grass you are cutting?
What do you use to trim On the weeds And your grass
I was using .130 trimmer line for the grass. I find it to be the best against this thicker canary grass.
Have to ask; did you cut the whole thing with a string trimmer because you just enjoy it, or do you not have a mower?
Well, there’s a few factors. So right now with the string trimmer some jobs are definitely a lot easier and mowers can’t access some of the areas.
The second factor is I don’t have a mower larger then 21inches at the current moment. It’s in the plans right now to upgrade soon. But time and finances aren’t necessarily on my side at the moment.
But once things fall into place there will be some upgrades.
@@golovinpropertyservices Hang in there and continue to do the type work you showed in the video and it will come. Best of luck.
I sure will! Thank you William! :)
How are you liking the 131? Has it been reliable? I am torn between the 240 and the 131.
The 131 has been absolutely reliable, I’ve put up around 300 hours of use on one of my units and probably around 400 hours on the other and they both have been kicking hard. I’ve mulched blackberry bushes and have been cutting grasses of all thickness and sizes and I’m satisfied with it. Around 300 hours of usage I’ve noticed the valves start loosening up and need adjustment. Apart from that I haven’t had any issues.
I personally haven’t tried out the 240, but I’m considering getting a bigger unit just for the experience, I’ll probably be selling my second 131 and then see what else I can find if it sells.
But if you’re looking to save some money, I’d say the 131 is worth the money. If you’re not worried about the money, then why not give the 240 a try?
@@golovinpropertyservices thanks! I really appreciate the input. The 240 is only 1cc higher than the 131 and the 131 is about 200$ less.
I owned alot of powerfull brushcutters.
Mainly fs450's & fs480's. I am used to having 2 stroke trimmers and brushcutters. I was curious on how well the 131 handles blackberry bushes and brushcutting in general? Since its a 4 stroke it spins slower but has more torque. Not sure if that would be a advantage or a disaventage when it comes to cutting brush and small trees
Well in the case of blackberry bushes or mulching brush, I think torque and spin speed are sort of factors that are put off to the side. What I noticed is it comes down to technique and the blade. I have a good amount of videos where I use the 131 with a mulching blade and it rips through small trees, bushes, blackberry vines 1in and thicker.
I’d go with the 131 since the price doesn’t necessarily justify a huge difference in power.
I haven’t ever used a FS460 or anything up on the “clearing saw” scale, so I don’t have the experience of what they’re able to do. But if you’re not doing any heavy duty work then FS 131 is the choice.
I'm going to throw my vote in here for the FS131 because it's perfect for the power and weight!
The more powerful you go they'll also get heavier and more thirsty!
@@ratfarmers I forgot to even consider the weight, that’s a great point.
Whats is your favourite trimmer line?
I like .105 square/twisted Diamond trimmer line and .130 round trimmer line.
Wow, that was some serious weed wacking👍 How long did this take?
Thanks! :)
This entire job with all the stops to readjust camera angles was 1 hour.
I wonder how fast that would be with a couple razor sharp traditional scythes. Pretty much the same motion as the big weed eater. Just a thought.
It is the same motion and concept. Maybe one day I’ll purchase a traditional scythe and do a comparison between the two. :)
@@golovinpropertyservices that could be fun to see.
@@jacobforrester9827 I think so too!
Line?
I am using TurfGro .105/2.7mm Diamond SquareTrimmer Line. But if your trimmer head allows for thicker trimmer line I would go with .130/3.3mm against this tall and thick grass. If you can only go with .105 then I would recommended using the Stihl CF3 Pro Trimmer line, it is a square/twist hybrid with pointed edges making it very durable and allows easier cutting.
How many tanks of fuel?
This was actually done on 3/4ths of a tank. With fuel that had been sitting around for 3 months. I have 2 Stihl FS-131’s and I wanted to break this one in again and see how it felt.
@@golovinpropertyservices wow that's great. I figured it took much more than that. Impressive. Thanks.
No problem! Normally when I use a full tank it lasts 50 minutes without stopping and going full-throttle.
Great videos, thanks for making them. I'm inspired to attack the blackberries near me. I don't love what you say at the very end but that's on me. Otherwise very satisfying to watch your work.
Are you from UK? I think so, because Stihl FS ... in the USA is a rarity.
BTW Good job. )))
Thanks for watching! :)
I’m actually from the USA, but Stihl products are actually quite common in the USA, at least in my area, as far as I know. Maybe not these bigger brush cutters or clearing saws, but they are quite popular in my area.
@@golovinpropertyservices The Stihl is as such, but my point is that in the US version of the FS, the one with a bicycle mount is an exception. R versions with an all-round handle are in common use. I watched a lot of videos on this subject, and I see the US version of the FS for only the third time. (Googletranslator) ))
SY
@@Prunus1st I see, that does make sense. The bicycle handles aren’t as common here. The market here is aimed more at residential properties and paying extra for bike handles is something consumers here don’t really want to do, but prefer the r series for storage and “ease of use”.
@@golovinpropertyservices In Europe we use almost only this type of handles. They are much more comfortable on large areas. Cutting from right to left is easier, better control, in US you are often mowing, brush cutting, up and down which is easier with round handles.
@@pracakosaipilarka4301 I really love the bike handles, for me it’s a lot more comfortable and what I prefer to use. The loop handle is very uncomfortable for me because I have to lean on one foot and it causes my lower back to get sore, so whenever I have an opportunity to use the bike handles, I’ll use them.
