Evidently you heard a little wrong. You take the leather shave it down for backing and replace the old rod bearing then put it back together. In Alaska during ww2 you couldn't get tires or other parts. There is a lot of interesting work arounds like that my father did. He was a mechanic for 60 years, I have been an aircraft mechanic for 60 years
I would have tried to run coat hanger or some stiff wire thru the brake hoses, had to do this once,from both sides, the hoses puff up but you can "ream em" out.
