There is one part which I cannot understand: you see in both design, the scanning signal is released via the individual element (whether powered by a "shared" transmitter" or its "own" transmitter) so in what way is the PESA being "passive"?

      from chatgpt:
The term "PESA" stands for "Passive Electronically Scanned Array." It might seem a bit counterintuitive because the "passive" part in the name doesn't mean that PESA radars don't actively send out signals or perform scanning. Instead, it refers to the way in which the radar elements, or the individual antennas, receive and transmit signals.
      In a PESA radar system:
      1. **Transmitter-Receiver Sharing**: Multiple antenna elements are connected to a shared transmitter-receiver module (TRM). This TRM is responsible for generating the radar signals and distributing them to the antenna elements.
      2. **Passive Reception**: While the TRM actively transmits the radar signal, the antenna elements passively receive the reflected signals (or echoes) from objects in the environment. These passive antenna elements don't actively transmit signals themselves.
The "passive" aspect in the name PESA refers to the reception part of the radar. The antenna elements do not actively transmit signals; they are only responsible for receiving the signals that bounce back from objects in the radar's field of view. The active part, in this case, is the central TRM that generates and controls the radar signals.
In contrast, AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar systems have individual Transmitter-Receiver Modules (TRMs) for each antenna element, meaning each element can both transmit and receive signals actively. This allows for more flexibility and control, as each element can independently generate and steer radar beams, making AESA systems more advanced and versatile.

Chatgpt is a little wrong on this. The "passive" and "active" refer to the array of elements themselves. In a PESA array, the actual antennas aren't individually powered and aren't independently controlled, they're all powered and controlled by one overlord controller that energizes the whole array at once. The antennas themselves are considered to be passive.
In an "active" array, the individual antenna elements are powered, they're all individually active. So an AESA array can individually power and control each antenna's function independent of each other.
