I had some basic bike maintenance courses from a bikes engineer and he also advised to just use mild soap solution for cleaning and skip on all the fancy stuff. Another important advice that he gave was to never ever hose it down with a high pressure hose. The high pressure of the water can even get the grease out of the headset bearings and possibly other bearings, believe it or not. Drying the bike after washing it is also recommended.
Good to hear that. I just do what works for me been cleaning my bikes this way as long as I can remember. I know some people like to do a “careful” jet wash but it’s not for me.
Do you service your hubs, bottom bracket? Spraying the water concerns me. I personally don't like putting chain oil on. It picks up to much sand and dirt. I typically use WD-40. It's light enough to clean up the chain plus lube it. It's what I found works for me. If you like the chain oil and you are happy with the results, God bless you. Thanks for making the videos. I would like to purchase a Brompton in the future. I like the idea of taking a public transportation and then having a bike to ride when you reach your destination. Hope you stay safe and well.
Thanks for your comments. I too have used WD40 as chain lube and still do occasionally, however I for me it’s a a little light for autumn/winter use. Good luck with buying the Brompton, I’ve certainly enjoyed every minute of having mine.
Thankyou yes l use soapy washing up liquid, then water. I also find using a sturdy old dish washing up brush, works well to remove mud, after bike has been sprayed with water. Living in an apartment l find it difficult using my charcher hose pipe. I use a oily rag for chain, sparingly. My bike runs smoothly and it’s 5 years old, but it still looks brand new, because l clean it regularly. Especially before l store it away over winter. Best wishes to you and your viewer. ☺️🌈👌
5:30 between oiling and wiping off the excess lube, let it sit for a couple of hours (e.g. overnight) if possible. This will let the oil go where it belongs. 🔧⛓️⚙️
Thanks for taking the time to post the video, but WD40 dissolves and dilutes lubricating oil and lubricating grease, it may make something move freely initially, but eventually it will be metal against metal when the WD40 evaporates. It's like adding thinners to paint. NEVER put it on the mainframe hinges of your Brompton!!!!
Many thanks for that, I’ll definitely look into this although I have to say I’ve been doing this around 4 years now with no apparent problems. WD40 seems to be quite a controversial product, for instance while I know the manufacturer don’t recommend it for use on chains,I know of one ex pro cyclist on the GCN channel that has used it for years and swears by it!
@@terrysallbikes one description I've heard to describe WD-40 versus actual lubricating petroleum-based oils is that it's a surfactant not a lubricant. I know people who actually clean the downtube in there Brompton with WD-40 because it strips all the grease and oils and grime off really well. Definitely not something you want to use as a lubricant because it does dry up. It can actually attract dust which will work as an abrasive when it dries
As I said in my previous comment I’m aware thar WD40 somewhat splits opinion, many people don’t recommend it as a lubricant. However many, myself included have used it for many years with no apparent problems
Simple yet important :-) Thanks for breaking it down and reminding us we don't need to spend an arm and a leg for basic maintenance
Thanks

Thanks for your comment, it’s good to see someone else that can maintain their bike well without expensive chemicals👍🚴♀️

Thanks for the tip
I think I saw a Topeak Mini Morph pump on top of the rack at the end of the video.
I think you may well have👍

I bet the paintwork loves that scourer
Don’t use that side on the paint! 😂😂
What chain cleaner device are you using? Looks interesting.
This is from MucOff fits on the aerosol can
What’s the name of that chain cleaner with the adaptor I can’t find it. Great video
Thanks, it’s a “MucOff” chain cleaner, relatively expensive but works really well
What about the back rear hinges near the hub for the gears? Always hard to teach there.
Yes agreed 👍
if you clean outside, please consider using soap that isnt harmful for plants, soil and our water :)
I’ll look into that not aware I was causing any harm
That's ain't dirty, wait till you see mine, neeh dont use kitchen scourrer .
Just use people to do it for you😅🤪
Yes that would work👍😂
