I bought this mower in fantastic condition, cheap, from someone who couldnt find anyone to stop the new belt from falling off with the deck raised....Thankyou in advance. :)
I've owned my Craftsman mower for at least 25 years... all that time, I have changed several mower belts and only 1 drive belt... not too complicated. Several times I replaced the deck belt during the season because it had gotten loose. I looked in my owners' manual and online for the correct method of tightening the belt. I suspected the rod you pointed out was the correct one, and thank you for confirming what I wanted to know for 25 years !
Thanks!! This is just wanted to know but you're the first I found after looking at many that explained it correctly (even with the one handed camera!) I subscribed.
Just had the same type deck to remove to replace the ground drive belt. Didn't know what the rod was for. Just got pissed that it was one more thing an engineer thought up to get in the way. Good to know what it is and how to adjust it. Thanks. Peace-out and God bless. 😎✌👍
Good detailed video, very helpful in helping me figure out why my craftsman riding mower belt kept jumping off, I was lose but thanks to you I'm looking forward to cutting more grass. Keep up the good videos, thanks alot.
Oh man. Awesome feedback. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the kind words. And as always, thank you for watching 😁👍 I look forward to seeing your comments in my other videos 😁👍
my craftsman doesn't have an adjustment, so I pulled on the end of the spring plug and wrapped a small piece of hanger wire around, made it quarter inch tighter. I can always add washers or more wire later if needed, thanks
Hi Van, Great video thanks. However, I think you're wrong about using the deep well socket to adjust that nut. The block with the clip is threaded, the nut is just a lock nut. So you gotta pull out the clip, loosen the lock nut and then rotate the block on the threads. Hope this helps!
Some people burn up belts because they go through high grass too fast. People don't know how to use these mowers lol. Know the difference between user error and lawn mower error y'all 🤣 loved this video
Haha that’s funny. Because my son in law borrowed my cordless weed eater to cut around his yard (That He Never Cuts). He brought it back and said it didn’t work too well. I said it ain’t a bush hog. Haha. Don’t let your yard get grown up so bad and it will work great haha. Thanks for the great comments. I hope you have a great week.
Good vid and well explained Van! You just saved someone a nice chunk of money who won't have to pay out for a trip to a shop or a service call to the house! At my age when I have to mess with the decks on the Cub or Craftsman anymore I drive the front tires up on car ramps and jack up the back end with a floor lack and a short pc. of 4x4 then set jack stands under the rear so I don't have to get all the way down on the ground anymore. Just came up with that recently after my surgery not to mention I probably have close to 20 years on ya - lol
Thanks so much for uploading this. I had purchased that a brand new adjustment bar and assumed it came preset I assumed. I kind of thought it would be that being I didn't have the problem before putting on the new bar. Save me a hour + trying to figure it out and possible a new belt lol. This video is older but have a wonderful day from here in South Carolina.
Thank you for watching. I only have videos on the model I own. You may be able to download your owners manual from google search. It should show how to level your deck. 😁👍
just a note when turning the adjustment nut turn towards the end of the rod towards the front of the mower.i turned it the wrong way first and it was worse
So which way to you turn the nut to loosen the deck belt tension.? Mine is too tight and I need to loosen it but haven’t found clear direction on which way to move the nut. Any help would be appreciated!
great video, but I had trouble seeing what you did to tighten belt. I replaced my belt last summer but I did not know you had to tighten it. my new belt just broke again less than a year later. is it because it was a little loose? any more videos or info you can give me would help. I have a craftsman dlt3000. thank you!
Doggone... I need this and an oil change Thanks for reminding me of 1 more chore I gotta do before snowfall! (Or spring) lol Great video!! I love DIY/How To... becuz these are all things I need to do/learn!! 👍👍👍 Have a great day, Van!!
Does not work for my Craftsman Lt2000, it has no such rod as that for an adjustment. I have the belt that is "supposed" to be correct for it, but it has too much slack and will not engage the blades. I've tried and tried, don't know what to try next.
They are not all the same. There are the ones with an electric PTO clutch,to engage the belt drive and require a constant belt tension and the others that are a manual/mechanical belt drive engagement.
If your pivot for your adjusting rod it threaded it makes it very difficult to get the right tension on the belt , Because you have to remove the the keeper then the pivot and pull the rod of and turn the pivot and hope you have the right tension on the belt but if you have to tighten the adjustment to get better tension then you are fighting it to get it back in the hole. I have been working on my deck and could not get the proper belt I had to buy a standard v belt because Homo Depot cut down their belts to half of what they had and I can no longer get the proper belt . they used to stock . I took the box down there with the part number and was told no longer carried in store. So now I have to figure out how to tighten the adjustment and fight to get it back in the hole for engagement I got 5 acres of weeds to cut If they hadnt threaded the pivot and just put two nuts on there so you could adjust the rod in place and get proper tension would of been a better design instead of having to take it off and on I think I am going to have to ream out the pivot and put on two jam nuts to I can adjust it in place there is very little room in there as you know
So do I screw the linkage farther down onto the rod (toward the rear of the mower) or screw it further off the rod (toward the front of the motor) to tighten?
Thanks for asking! I had the exact same question/concern. So we are going to loosen the jamb nut, back the mounting part back a few turns and then tighten the jamb nut back up.
So wouldn't loosening the adjustment make the belt tighter? Good video btw, you didn't waste a ton of time over explaining. Usually I just need to know the concept I don't need the full story.
Ok im really seriously confused right now lol im so sorry but like really What's the stabilizer bar even for because mine isn't even hooked up to the mower
My belt keeps dropping off during use. I found it crosses over the idle arm(?) that runs from tension pully to a bracket behind the outside pully on side opposite of shoot (?) where grass clippings blow out. I took pully off to get to adjustment. It helped a little but belt still falls off. I am thinking where the belt runs from one side to other at back if deck is rubbing on that arm that gies across from idle pully to the bracket it sits in the tightens belt when engaged. Do I need to tighten this nut on that arm up more?
It’s hard to say without seeing it. Most of the time the problem is a stretched out belt that needs replaced. The linkage and rods shouldn’t be an issue unless the deck had a hard impact that could have bent something. There should be a good diagram of the belt routing. Check that. Also there should be brackets that run beside the pulleys. They keep the belt from falling off when not engaged. Sometimes they get bent and need to be bent back into place. I hope this helps 👍😁
if you take the rod loose (which is what you will have to do anyway to turn the piece) then you can use a wrench and not need a deep well. of course i have a deep well but would probably just use a ratchet wrench anyway.
So i have the opposite problem, after replacing a pully, the belt is too tight and the blades spin when I do not have them engaged. I assume I can use a deep well socket and just try loosening that nut?
HELP! So I have been scouring for parts manuals and videos and yours is the closest I can find. I have a old craftsman riding lawn tractor 4000. The place you are pointing at 3:01 is where the tension rod connects. The up and down piece. WHAT IS THAT CALLED? I was mowing my grass and it suddenly stopped engaging. The belt was replaced near the end of last season and it is fine. Initially, I thought my motor pully froze but it was moving. When I looked up how to tension the belt I thought I had it licked, but when I looked at my mower that up-and-down piece is snapped. Is that something that can be repaired or is it something that needs to be sautered back together?
Thks, great video, one of my spindles is broke tryin to find right spindle. I have one with four bolts. my front deck clip to tractor is heavy piece of steel not two bars... i got 1990 craftsman ii
Have you. Checked on eBay or amazon for the spindle? If you need the actual part number, you can google you mower for a owners manual. It will have the part numbers listed. I downloaded my owners manual to my kindle app on my iPhone. It helps a lot. Good luck with your fix. Let me know how it works out for ya. Have a great week. 👍😁
You can slide the cable engagement bracket back with a 10mm wrench or take tension spring off that the same cable is attached to and shorten it by torching the end while in a vice to red hot then curling in to itself. Attach that end when cool to the screw side and the cable to the other.

Hey van I have a craftsman riding mower T1800 ..I have a problem...the gas petal seems to be stuck...I don't know what the problem is...I took the brake off.. thinking that's the problem..it's still stuck without the brake on it ..any suggestions that might help ..thank you and God bless.. Ezequiel

I purchased a new deck belt for my craftsman mower... the store sold me a deck belt that was 1" shorter than the belt I took off... when I installed the new belt... I cranked the mower, but the blades began to turn even though I had not engaged the handle .... will loosening the tension rod put slack onto the belt, preventing it from turning before the belt handle is engaged ?
Van, I have a 2000 year LT1000 . For some reason. The deck will only come up about an inch. When I raise the deck. The arm goes to the spot it suppose to go to. But the deck barely moves off the ground.. What is the fix?
I have a Lawn-Boy riding mower with a single blade 30 inch deck and need to know how to do the leveling on that and adjusting things do you have any advice on that thank you
My Sears LT 4000 2 blade mower, the blades are not aligned so it does not cut even. One is not parallel to the other and it is lower. The spindles mount to the bottom side of the deck and the only way I see to level is either to bend the deck at the mounting holes or trim the spindle bolting legs. Do you have any suggestions?
Im not sure about that. one of my blades was bent one time. It caused it to not cut level. It wasn't off by much. Try a new set of blades. And make sure your tire pressure is equal in the front tires as well as the back tires.. Great question. Thanks for asking. Hope this helps. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Van, I checked tires and blades. I have tried sucking the deck up at the spindle mounting holes with a strong back and jack bolts, but not much luck. What about trimming the spindle legs? I can't find a UA-cam on this subject.
Michael Tavary I’m really not sure. My motto is you have to break some eggs to make an omelette. If you feel comfortable trying it. I’d go for it. What’s the worse that could happen? You might have to buy some replacement parts. But you’ll learn something in the process. Please let us know how it turns out. 😁👍 sorry I’m not any more help than that. Have a great week brother.
I have a old craftman 42 can you please make a video on the torsion springs how to assemble on the brake arms I have the old style circle curly springs part number 140086 nobody on youtube has made a video on how to remove and assemble the springs please help!
How did you get the belt off the main flywheel or whatever, it looks like you have the same model as mine. And I just dont see any way to get that off so I can get my deck out
There should be a bar beside the drive pulley. Just pull down on the belt to get it past the bar. If this doesn’t answer your question the. Let me know and I will try to answer it better. 👍
@@VansWorld hey thank you for replying, there was a release bar I had to slide out. Of course once I popped that sucker out the belt came right down like you said.

What size deepwell socket?
Can I see behind the gas tank? Mine has a u shaped bar with a spring I found just laying there now blades wont engage

Is this to tighten up the belt for just the deck belt???? Had to replace spindles on mines and belt is a little loosen need to be tighten somehow
So do I screw the linkage farther down onto the rod (toward the rear of the mower) or screw it further off the rod (toward the front of the motor) to tighten?
Front 😁👍
Thanks for asking! I had the exact same question/concern. So we are going to loosen the jamb nut, back the mounting part back a few turns and then tighten the jamb nut back up.
Wow I bet you’re handy to have around 🤗
I have a Craftsman yts3000. I don't have that adjust rod.
What is the exact size belt for this mower?

It’s hard to say without seeing it. Most of the time the problem is a stretched out belt that needs replaced. Are you sure that rod tightens the belt? I believe that rod is the blade engagement rod.
Yep. It pushes the blade belt further when the blades are engaged. You are right though it is the blade engagement rod.
no sir no more for new sears craftsman 46 inch
You back off to tighten and turn on to loosen?
Yep
Screw it in or screw it out?
if you take the rod loose (which is what you will have to do anyway to turn the piece) then you can use a wrench and not need a deep well. of course i have a deep well but would probably just use a ratchet wrench anyway.

Hey so I have the exact same model, tightened as far as I could and I still can't get the belt right, what size belt are you using??
Not sure right off hand. But there should be a label under the hood with belt specs.
You can slide the cable engagement bracket back with a 10mm wrench or take tension spring off that the same cable is attached to and shorten it by torching the end while in a vice to red hot then curling in to itself. Attach that end when cool to the screw side and the cable to the other.

In your video you pointed out a pulley which has nothing to do with tensioning the belt. My Craftsman has a cable controlling the tensioner pulley.
Awesome. Thanks for the update. Have a great week 😁👍

Why dont you wash all that shit off with the hose before you work on the belt ?
But what do you tighten or how do you adjust? The screw on the end of that rod is that what I do?
