  • Math is one of our favorite subjects, but it hasn't always been that way. Last year was a huge transition year. Singapore Math offers multiple versions, so deciding which Singapore Math version to use can be somewhat challenging. This video discusses which version we chose and why.

    Primary, Primary 2022, Dimensions...what you are most interested in? Primary and Primary 2022 both go through Level 5 and have Home Instructors Guides. Dimensions is through Level 8 and is just starting to release Home Instructors Guides for the lower elementary levels. How important is a Home Instructors Guide to your decision making?

      It builds such a great foundation. Plus, it's teaching me the "why" to some of the things that I had just memorized. It's almost like I'm taking math again, which is great since it was my favorite subject in elementary school! :)

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I have a few questions for you, I’ve been using primary math US edition (old version) since first grade for my kids, now that they have the 2022 edition available, I’m considering switching. For the old version, there’s workbook, intensive practice and challenging problems. But for the 2022 version, there’s the student workbook, and master and beyond. In your opinion, how do those two versions of workbooks compare in terms of the amount of practice and difficulty level? Is one version easier than the other? Does the 2022 version offer video instructions? Thank you so much!

    We started 4A of Primary 2022 this year. I have some frustrations with the layout of the HIG and lack of instruction for certain concepts, but I’m wondering if that is simply because we are new to the Singapore method. Seemed too easy for my son at first, but as we get further into the program I am wishing there were more in depth explanations as I am sometimes just as confused as he is! Do you feel dimensions explains the concepts more thoroughly? I’d like to stick with what we have but realize that if we stick with it, we will have to make a switch after 5B anyway…perhaps better now than later:) TIA!

      Great question! Actually, no. With switching in 4th grade (which is what we did, too), the concepts that Singapore builds on from the early grades are difficult to pick up at this time. Bar modeling was a huge one for me. What helped me more than the teacher's manual was the Homeschool Singapore Facebook group. Jessica (who was an author for some of the Primary 2022 pieces) runs the group. She did Word Problem Wednesdays. I watched so many of those videos. They are definitely what helped me learn the concepts and the "Singapore Method." Before switching, I would recommend checking out some of Jessica's videos on her Facebook group and see if they are helpful.

    • @brenkm955
      @brenkm955 2 роки тому

      @@HomeschoolwithJen Thank you for your reply! I am actually in that group:) I have heard of the videos Jessica has developed as a part of her membership but will have to check out the ones you have mentioned. Understanding bar modeling hasn’t been too difficult (for the most part) for my son, but sometimes it seems to take a bit more effort than it should to understand what exactly we are supposed to be doing at first since the guide seems to be lacking a bit.😅 I appreciate your feedback on it - it’s always helpful to know others’ experiences and how they might be adapting. Thanks again!

    My son is nearly finished with Abeka Arithmetic 3. I am interested in Primary 2022. I bought home instructor guides for 3a + 3b of Primary U.S. edition so I could fill in gaps before doing 4a + 4b next year. The biggest areas to work on are mental math and story problems beyond the types Abeka uses.

    We are switching to Singapore Dimensions for my middle two children, grades 2 and 4. I really like that the challenge is built into the program. They've covered most of the material in their respective grade levels, but I am going to keep them grade-level due to the change from procedural to conceptual math. My oldest is a rising 5th grader, and he completed a lighter, more procedural grade 6 math curriculum this year. I decided to use Primary - Standards 6A and 6B because I thought he might do better with a more elementary-looking textbook that is in color. He will also be repeating a lot of content, but I added the Intensive Practice. The middle school Dimensions program looks wonderful, but I am hoping he will be more ready for that in another year. It just has a different appearance. I wish there was higher level math designed for younger kids.

    • @HomeschoolwithJen
      @HomeschoolwithJen  2 роки тому

      The challenge that is included in Singapore Dimensions is great! I love that we can use the challenge problems when my daughter seems to be "breezing" through a concept and then skip the challenge problems when she needs more help with the basics. Please let me know how your kids like it.

    I am just finishing Abeka 3 Arithmetic which I loved, but I am underwhelmed with the progress from this point through year 8. I am deeply considering Dimensions. I have watched your videos to glean as much advice as possible since it looks like we are in similar boats. I am scared to leave the spiral approach that I love about Abeka. Do you still do Beast Academy every other week as a spiral? My husband doesn’t want me to do year round schooling, which I would really need to do to be able to fit that in. Do you do the extra workbooks like Intensive Practice? What would you advise for me to do as far as questions…I see some that say dont do workbook, dont do textbook, dont do this, dont do that. I am one of those that made my kid do all of the questions in Abeka, and it was never a big deal…but it sounds like with Dimensions, I need to pick and choose somehow

    • @HomeschoolwithJen
      @HomeschoolwithJen  2 роки тому +2

      The actual number of problems that is included in Dimensions is much less than the actual number of problems that is included in Abeka. But, they are spread out with fewer on the page. Getting over the hump of seeing 4-5 pages for math work was a little difficult for my daughter since she was so used to 2 pages. We use the Dimensions Textbook for the teaching portion of the lesson. If my daughter had a great grasp on the concept, then I normally skip the "teaching" portion included in the Dimensions Workbook and have her to the practice problems in the Workbook. The way we approach each lesson is different, mainly focusing on how she is doing with the concept. If she is not grasping it well, then we take one more day to go over it. Also, Dimensions includes "Challenge" problems. I only have her do these if she is doing really well with the concept and I don't think she will be discouraged if she can't figure it out. I really don't spend very much time on review/spiral each day. Maybe 5 minutes, 3 days per week, normally in the form of seasonal worksheets, brain teasers, mental math, etc. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thank you for yet another really well done, informative video! My son is almost 7 and we are currently doing the old version of the good and beautiful level 2. I’m thinking about doing primary 2022 for next school year. There are so many options when it comes to Singapore Math! Which is both a good and challenging thing! I had totally discounted dimensions but now they have a HIG for the early years so I have added that back into my short list 🤣
    Unlike you, I am not much of a math person. Do you think primary or dimensions would be easier to teach if you are a parent without a strong math background?

      Thank you so much! I'm so happy to hear that these videos are helpful. I haven't seen the Dimensions HIG since it is only for the younger grades right now. The Primary 2022 curriculum looks very solid and extremely well laid out with the HIG. Both versions provide solid math. It would be wonderful if you can view the HIG for both of them and see which you think you would be more comfortable using. There are also Singapore video options if you want to outsource math teaching. They seem to really be trying to provide useful tools to help with the curriculum. As I mentioned, they are very solid programs, so I would look at what you think you would be most comfortable using. Please let me know what you decide.

      I would check out the scope and sequence for each first. They cover mostly the same concepts, but there are some differences. Also, what is your comfort level with teaching math? Right now, 2022 has a home instructor's guide for homeschoolers whereas dimensions only has the teacher's manual. I know dimensions is in the process of releasing home instructor's guides, but I'm not sure if they are to level 4 yet. They both are very solid versions. Thank you for watching! Hope you have a great day. And, YEAH for gymnastics! My daughter ❤️ gymnastics!

      Get the HIG! I made a mistake of not buying it in the beginning coz I thought the textbook is so easy "I could probably do it on my own". But no, what's easy for us may be very difficult for kids. HIG presents how to teach a certain topic using different techniques and in ways a child can "understand".
