  • This is a well-overdue update on what has been happening since I last spoke to you in late October. It's January, and it's cold, but it doesn't stop people from cycling outdoors! I thought I would give it a go but it didn't go to plan. In the meantime, Cycle Norway dot com is coming along well but much work is ahead before the launch in April 2023.

Love the logo. I used to fatbike during very cold days here, about the same if not colder than your's. No more, too hard on everything, especially the old bones., Great work Matthew. Good luck with the rest.

How many immediately recognized the start of the Trollstigen ride on that left side of the new cup?
Living in Oslo I have previously (before Covid and WFH) biked to work every day, summer and winter, without breaks even in -25C, but it does require a totally different mind set, focusing on staying out of the wind chill with sufficient layers and proper boots + flat pedals. I also more or less destroyed two bikes over those years due to all the salt. 😞

Living in Norway and riding my bike to work every day, I can absolutely understand you turning around. At some point everything just starts to feel frozen, from the little bit of skin exposed to the air to the thigh and toes and especially the fingers. And my gear has been frozen for two weeks, so it hasn't been very fun lately.
I'm excited to see your website as I might take a trip through some part of Norway this summer, so April is a perfect time for putting it up I think!
I actually like the old logo way better as it is easily understandable for everyone whereas the new one is bit harder to figure out what it is supposed to depict. It took me a little time to get that it is not some sort of figure but Trollstigen (which a lot of people coming across your website might not know). I looks cool though!

I've been cycling here in Oslo year round for the last 3 years. If the hands, neck, ears are covered properly, I found it fine !
One thing I dislike (maybe you can help ?) is the people using floodlights, with thousands of lumens, in the city (or the tour de finance for that matter).
I get it's dark, I get you want to be seen ... but it is just blinding the other cyclists .... maybe an educational video on the safe practices for the dark winter, with some notes about being considerate for other cyclists ;)

Tips for the winter, everything you need to keep warm, like your camera batteries and gloves when you are not wearing them. Put them inside your jacket and your body heat will keep them nice and toasty. No more prematurely dead batteries and no more ice cold gloves to put on :D

@@matthewnorway No, the flag colors are visible, not the flag per se. Many countries have blue and red on their flag, so just colors are not as good as the real flag design.

I have been cycling in the winter and I still need to be convinced it is fun. I used to do gravel before moving, but the region becomes a huge swamp in the summer. No idea how to have a good gravel ride close to home without diving head first into a swamp. Done that a couple of times, not fun.

Riding in Norway in the winter is next level badass to me.
In Michigan I always roll into fall with the idea that I'm going to ride in the snow. Usually the first time ride in the rain with the temps just above freezing usually snaps me back into "NOPE!" territory. I can usually stay dry and warm except for my feet. I would be curious to see what you guys wear on your feet there.

Great news on the website coming in April. It will form a big part of my future expeditions into Norway.
This has been my first Scandinavian winter, and down here in SE Sweden, it doesn't get quite so cold. I did one ride at minus 16 and my Garmin battery died about 5 minutes into the ride. And then two spokes on my rear wheel snapped. I only ended up doing 20km.
Down to minus 10 is fine though. I stay warm enough, the bike and batteries seem to work. I had a similar issue with boots too. Due to the size of my feet (size 50), my choices were pretty much zero. The Lake boots that I ended up with are incredibly comfortable, but much below 5c, an overshoes is needed. I've got some heated socks now, but I've yet to use them in anger.

I quit winter cycling in my early thirties, it's to dangerous in traffic and way to uncomfortably cold, and the bike needs a lot of maintenance all the time. No, winter in Norway is more about cross country skiing not riding your bike.
