- A Monroe family had a close encounter with a cougar over the weekend when the wild cat ran through their backyard and came within feet of the family.
On Saturday, the Havener family were sitting on their back patio when a cougar ran through their yard and came face to face with them. The shocking moments were captured on their surveillance cameras.
"All of a sudden this whirlwind shows up in the middle of us," said Greg Havener.

We build homes in their former territory and then act surprised when we see them.
Homeowners are truly the worst type of people. The indignant self-righteousness as they claim they work so hard for their home and nobody else is entitled to their land. They're all cowardlyslaves and lying thieves.
Exactly. This is their home, and we are living in it.
What would you do, just sit there?
The little girl is very aware and has great reflexes.
Well, she did react, but experts suggest holding your ground instead of fleeing for safety, then you become a prey and target for them to chase etc.
You never wanna run from a cougar. It signals to them that you're prey.
Chickens standing there like "What are we chopped Liver?"
They have chickens and cats and a puppy … lots of potential food sources for the cougar…
Free range chickens….what could go wrong🤔
Yup....like a supermarket for Cougars. They'll be back.
"Don't have a food supply," like pets & small humans
Intelligent cat
She distracted the cougar
That was a BIG, sturdy, healthy cougar! I'm surprised it didn't go for the chickens wandering around! Easy catch! Magnificent animal!
Seriously, the cat will be back…..yummy , easy pickings.
It probably didn't go after the chickens because the chickens weren't moving very much. The cats were walking around, making them more enticing to the cougar...
A mountain cougar killed a guy in northern California a few months ago
@@bobbobsin3202 Yes, only 20 miles from where I live, but fatal attacks remain rare, only a handful in the last 130 years,.
That’s got to be one of the closest cougar encounters I’ve seen that’s been reported. Usually it’s roaming a neighborhood or cornered up a tree. Pretty wild.
What an awesome moment! Most folks never get to see one in their entire lives.
But they see you.
Thanks for the advice to stand your ground and yell if encounter a cougar…
Running away triggers a prey response from the cougar… easier said than done …
The cat was chasing a pet . Didnt they see it distract the cat from attacking them? The darker animal that ran past the cougar saved their lives because the cougar turned away to continue chasing its next meal. Yes those girls were very lucky not to get attacked.
It looked to me like that one cat may have saved the girl & Mom a mauling - it was safely away, then ran back at the cougar & distracted it when it stopped & looked at the people. GOOD KITTEH! TUNA FOR YOU!
Looked like it was thinking "oh crap, bipedals!"...
I think they forgot to name the other food source, cats! 😂
I have cats, and I know that look. I see that look on my young male cat's face when he's chasing a toy and it rolls into a room I am in.. It means, "Sorry, didn't know you were there." The face scrunches, the ears pull back, and the eyes blink deeply for a moment.
These people should get a bigger dog for a detterent if they let their little kids play in the yard the dog or dogs should be out there too.
Cougar: “Ah!! A people! Ah! Another people!! Where am I?? Run away!!!”
A beautiful cat.
She really is.... I hate seeing posts on next door of people complaining about wild animals in their yards. I always reply to them "Well, THEY were here first..."
1:17 This guy. It saw the House and definitely saw the kids. If the cat didn't double back this could've have been bad. The cougar looked right at her then the cat shoots past it.
Cougar: that’s my backyard though
Glad no one got hurt
Yeah, dont run away! That makes them chase you down.
Stop giving wildlife a bad rap! Scaring people to kill innocent animals. Do not report on stories unless you research from the animals prospective. Humans are the greatest predators. Like the guys on bikes that got attacked …..it was not reported that they were taunting it ,trying to get selfies.

@@richardkronberg4925 because that's what idiots do. So of course it would not be reported, can't have them looking like a fool
Please report on the clear cutting of surrounding area
Stupid cougar...there were chickens right there...chased the cat...
That is super close!
That little girl just turned and ran that was a BAD move. I get she's just a kid and this is a terrifying moment where your adrenaline just hits you hard, but she could have been killed so easily just from turning to flee. I once had a very close call with a cougar that got within 15 feet of me and I just froze. Luckily ot wasn't too interested in me.
Was that a really big cougar? It looked big to me.
The cat saved them, just look when the cougar was checking them up the cat MIRACULOUSLY 🐈 spook the cougar and it ran away
😅
This family definitely needs a guardian dog and not a golden retriever
Poor cougar is hungry and desperate. 😢
Sooo very true. Expanded housing taking away habitat. And unless you want your pets to be prey….keep them indoors.
No, just young... that was a small mountain lion...
Wow 🤩
That moment when a WSU alumni get's juked by a CWU alumni. Priceless.
Tell those kids NOT TO RUN and good luck with the chickens.
That is so scary. I live near Monroe.
*i always have close encounter with them at the bar.*
Definitely a HEALTHY cat.
That thing was thick as a snickums.
That is scary
Surprised it didnt go for the hens. It was too busy paying attention to the cat to notice them.
How did he not grab a chicken sandwich to go.
The cougar didn't notice the humans, it wanted the cat for lunch, when it saw the humans it got scared and ran...
They need two big dogs👌🏽
It was thinking that puppy on a string looks easier to catch…
what happened to the cougar spotted in Magnolia two months ago?
It got two covid shots and a booster and hasn't been seen since. I think it "died suddenly".
you don't have to tell ME to yell if being attacked by a cougar!
Omg
Cougar: Wild Animal
House Cat: Domesticated Animal
Better watch you pets and kids. I've seen big cats stalk the kids that come through Big Cat Rescue.
He turn and locked at the dog but luckily it got startled by the cat and ran after it
I'm surprised it didn't go for the chickens 😅
Leave the Mountain Lions alone!
The cougar ran off with one of the cats......
Saw chicken in backyard, food
Whats up with the goofy hat?
If an angry domestic cat 🐈 can inflict SERIOUS damage just imagine the power of the cougar 😲
Learn what you just saw.
Cougar must not like chicken! 🤷♂️
Big cougar!!! Yeesh
There is a good case that the black kitty intentionally drew the cougar away from the mom and daughter. At :51 kitty sticks its head from behind the trashcan and looks at its family then goes back behind the trashcan turning towards the exit in the cougar's direction. When the cougar turns its head :52 towards mom and daughter, brave kitty takes a huge risk inches away from the big cat and darts by it. Domestic cats sharing 90% DNA with humans have a strong family protection instinct as well as survival instinct. In this case it was likely a little of both for the brave black kitty.
Man that cat saved their lives by making itself a target. Meanwhile the chickens are like "what I miss?" XD our chickens would have been out of there so fast.. never met flightier birds (except for one, she's kinda slow mentally I think, it's kinda funny)
STOP building where they live. I feel no pity for these people
They lived basically everywhere til city folk killed and drove them off for their concrete jungles
Cougar will come again. It will be the cougar or a family member. One will lose.
If that cat hadn't come out from behind the garbage cans the ending might not have been so good. That cougar locked eyes on them till the cat came out and then it chased the cat again, yikes!
Nope. The cougar recoiled from the people. He wouldn't have attacked in that moment. If the cat had stayed behind the bins, the cougar would have run off. Unless attacked, a cougar doesn't change targets like that.
@@mollymainstream8005 No, your wrong. He/she locked eyes on them and only changed when the cat he/she chased behind the garbage 🗑 came running out again. Is it a given that it would have attacked them, no. But maybe
@scottkellogg9736 Can we then agree that "maybe" if you build your home close to nature, you may see some close up and personal?
@@mollymainstream8005 What does that have to do with my comment? Nothing. The little debate here is whether that cat might have gone after mom and child that was holding a little dog. That cougar had them in his sights when the cat went behind the garbage 🗑. When the cat took off again that startled the cougar and it went after the cat again. Only God knows what would have happened if the cat stayed behind the cans?
@scottkellogg9736 Why didn't the cougar go for the chickens? The chickens would have been much easier, so why do you think 🤔 that the big kitty never broke concentration on the little kitty? Yep, he looked at the people because they surprised him. He didn't know that they were there, he hadn't considered what he'd run into. This is a young cougar, he has no sense but it doesn't make him a murderer or even a potential murderer just because YOU think he COULD be!
This isn't a joke right here, this cat WILL DIE if humans think he's a threat! I'm saying that he doesn't deserve the "potential threat" label because he didn't do anything! It's not about "what if" if I apply that to YOU, could I say "this person's comment offends me, WHAT IF they're a jackass!?" ...no.. that would be prematurely unfair of me.
As our dialogue continues, however... I may be forced to make a decision on the matter...
I was absolutely mauled by a cougar last weekend!! Only cost me a few Vodka Martini's🍸🍸🍸
Meh. We have bobcats/lynx, coyotes, hawks ... not a rant big deal.
The guy is ready for a rodeo but doesn't have a bull, i quess a couger will have to do.
Just like those dudes that wear biker gear but don't own a motorcycle 😂
@@PB-jk8bl exactly, cosplay at it's finest 😁
Make a nice rug !
Cougar was just playing tag. Cause the chickens were very calm
Well running away worked pretty well for the house cat. So much for sewage media advice.
Cats are not supposed to be outdoors. Unless you want to feed the wildlife
No gun?
Cougar is the best tasting meat in the forest!
Missed Opportunity.
Sure thing Zeke, did you have Possum innards and greens for dinner tonight too?
🤣 best tasting 🤣 needed that
