@@magnafire1 Yeah, but Magnus didn't surpass Kasparov until years after so I doubt that. He probably just got bored of it. He beat everybody and won everything for 20 years basically. Etc.

I don't think he got bored, he just recognized someone better than him was on a rise and Carlsen proved that by surpassing Kasporov's rating later down the line. It was inevitable. If Carlsen never surpassed Kasporov's rating then him being bored might be more believable, but at the end of the day both of our opinions are valid.
Magnus himself has started to become more active in other things - modeling career, online blitz, etc. If he retires from FIDE next year, would you say hes ducking Firouzja? That's kind of ridiculous, but it's pretty much what you're saying about Kasparov.
@@marcjohn9404 Firouzja is not on MC's level and never has been since MC has been on top (let's not go by a few games). Carlsen is the strongest chess player to ever live. I wouldn't list him in my top 5 best players of all time from the 1850s to the present. He doesn't boast the meteoric rise of Fischer. He has not reigned in a more intense rivalry like Kasparov vs Karpov. He is not immortalized as a human ahead of his time like Capablanca. Neither is his playstyle distinct like Karpov, Tal, or Alekhine. But he is undoubtedly the strongest ever for being the strongest player in the era of super computers. Never a more precise, accurate, and engine like player since Capablanca. We should not get ahead of ourselves when talking about Carlsen. He is great in part by standing on the shoulders of past giants. His career is far from over as well.
@gunmetal He doesn’t have a distinct style. He plays defensively, aggressively, positionally, and all very very well. Regarding his rise, it is not immortalized like Fischer’s streak in the candidates. Fischer toppled a Soviet chess empire in a time where it seemed impossible. Again, there is not much to assess in terms of Carlsen. He may or may not have passed his prime in terms of his relative performance to his peers. But there is little to say about his pure strength, as that is easily assessed by engines. And do not forget that Karpov’s reign extended far beyond his world chess champion years. See the Linares 1994 tournament, where Karpov showed the world what type of a monster he was. And not only that, but see his head to head score against Kasparov. That by itself puts Karpov ahead of Carlsen, but that is exactly my point. We cannot assess Carlsen against his predecessors until he has retired completely.
@gunmetal Yea I agree. He’s the culmination of a long history of chess. To edge out the top GMs today, you can’t be good at any style in specific. You can’t be good at any phase in specific. And you cannot be good at only one time control. Carlsen showed that by holding all three championship titles in the past at once, and he showed it again by crushing Fabby in rapids. Tldr; Carlsen is a monster.
MC might not get a spot on your subjective top 5 of all time, but he is the best scoring, most accurate and most consistent player of all time and in all time formats at that, reigning in arguably the most competitive era of chess. It is not a Kaspy/Karpy rivalry simply because there are several more than one Karpov to Carlsen's Kasparov. He's dominating in a level playing field where many top players have nearly the same resources and support at their disposal and yet very few, at their best, can even manage to play at his lowest standard. My point is, our subjective opinions pale when faced with cold hard facts and numbers: MC is the best chess player of all time, you can keep your Fischers and Kasparovs, I'm sticking to the guy who reintroduced to the game when he declined Aronian's draw offer in 2013 and went on to needlessly win the game fully aware that a draw would grant him 1st place and $70,000.
This video tells me a few things: First, we may have seen the 3 best chess players ever in Kasparov, Vishy, and Magnus. Second, I am amazed at how unbelievable Vishy's longevity has been. He has been an amazing chess player for a ridiculous amount of years. Three, it feels like Carlsen is going to be on top forever!!!
Nah man, no matter how good Carlsen is now he will be surpassed, not in this generation, but 50 years down the road. Younger players will study carlsens game and then improve from there
Ivanchuk is a brilliant and innovative player, but very inconsistent and erratic. You can see his rapid rise and fall several times on the graph. He often lets his temper get the best of him and becomes frustrated.
Garry Kasparov is the greatest Chess Player of All Time. He started ruling the chess world from the age of 22 as the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985. He remained #1 until his retirement in 2005.
Well, I would definitely say that Kasparov is one of the greatest players, however in terms of a player dominating his field so far ahead of the competition I think both Morphy and Fischer comes to mind. As for Magnus, hes the World Champion with the toughest opposition of any previous player, as well as playing in the age of the engine, so if he remains #1 for a lets say 6-7 more years I would consider him the greatest of all time.
13 year old Magnus shocked him to the Bone.. Made him reevaluate his career in chess. In the end, he decided to quit. That's when God of chess has entered the game!
Why americans overrate Bobby Fischer? Yes he was good but until 1968-1972 other than that Fischer never was the best player in the world so a 5 year domination is not that good considering Kasparov 22 years being number 1 (in 1984-2005) in an error of Karpov (who Fischer was scared of) Yes Morphy is no doubt one of the greatest players of all time (but if he was not American) he wouldnt be praised the way he is praised Look at Steinitz for example (he did more for chess than Morphy) dominated for more than 30 years and was the 1st world champion
Wesley So's sudden climb to the 2nd spot is just awesome! Meanwhile, Master (Kasparov) and Student (Carlsen) dominated the game for such a long time and with consistency.
Kramnik was world number 1, twice, briefly: 1996 and January 2008 (www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=12295) Next time check before you post bullshit.
Kasparov is just amazing...I mean we think MC is great, but in 1990 Kasparov was the only one with a rating above 2800 and Karpov as 2nd was the only one with a rating above 2700.
Caruana played both for Italy and the USA during his career. I was expecting this video to show that by changing his country, but it remained Italy the whole time. It should be USA from 2015 onward.

@@madisonking8057 same goes to Italy , they are not a mediterranian monoculture You americans should realise you're not the only diverse country Actually by the most minorities inside a country,Rusia would be the most diverse(baltics, georgians, azerbijians, ukrainians, kazahks, inuits, mongols, finnish etc.) And none of these minorities identify themselfs as russian despite living there and having russian citizenship And by english name I meant being born there
Lorax i never said other countries aren’t diverse I was simply pointing out how the fact that the name didn’t sound english means nothing. Also I would say Brazil is likely the most diverse country in the world outside of African tribalism.
In July 1993 soon after his 18th birthday, Kramnik crossed 2700 for the first time and has remained in the 2700+ rating ever since. In April 2001, he became the second of only eight chess players to have reached a rating of 2800 (the first being Kasparov, followed by Anand, Topalov, Carlsen, Aronian, Caruana and Grischuk). Kramnik's highest standard rating to date is 2811 achieved in May 2013 when he was ranked #3 in the world.
The most important thing to note is this doesn't include retired player's final rankings and that the difference is merely a 100 points between the top and bottom. Yes that is quite bit in chess rankings but in real life, anybody could usually beat another player if they have a good game. Massive talent here.

It's funny that the ONLY person whose name is there in this list much before this video starts (from 1990 in fact, Kramnik entered top 20 in 1993) till the time this comment was written (Kramnik has retired at #15 and will subsequently be removed) gets no mention in the video's description. @@visceras7979 that's just the surface level stuff. Kasporov probably retired because he knew Magnus was a better player at the time he retired.
@@magnafire1 Yeah, but Magnus didn't surpass Kasparov until years after so I doubt that. He probably just got bored of it. He beat everybody and won everything for 20 years basically. Etc.
@@marcjohn9404 According to Carlsen he was beating Kasporov in most of their matches when he was training him.
GC is definitely not into modeling, so you went from a valid opinion to some weird comparisons. Lol. If MC retires next year with no one proving to be better, then it seems like he wasn't ducking anyone. I believe Gary knew the right time to leave. He is a smart man.
6:10
That's what a 7-0 start at the Sinquefield cup does to your rating (Fabiano's sudden gain in september 2014).
@@MrRankerOfficial Lichess My bitches. That's of recent advent.
@@MrRankerOfficial i asked him on a blitz game how is he so good.
His answer?
Memory.
It seems pretty clear why his name is Magnus!
i'm predicting this now: we are living in the era of the strongest chess player of all time, he who is named Magnus Carlsen
Quite likely. We will see over the next 5-10 years, I guess.
Very difficult for any player to surpass Kasparov
@@andrewstasionis5172 Well..let's just say that Magnus is on his way.
People thought the same thing with Bobby and kasparov
Nah man, no matter how good Carlsen is now he will be surpassed, not in this generation, but 50 years down the road. Younger players will study carlsens game and then improve from there
Sorry to see Ivanchuk and Polgar drop off the list.
I adore both of them!
:(
Ivanchuk is a brilliant and innovative player, but very inconsistent and erratic. You can see his rapid rise and fall several times on the graph. He often lets his temper get the best of him and becomes frustrated.
Polgar was just overhyped
@@KARTIKEYA007 Did you see the game in which she beat Anand?
The consistency of carlsen and anand is ridiculous
Garry Kasparov is the greatest Chess Player of All Time.
He started ruling the chess world from the age of 22 as the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985. He remained #1 until his retirement in 2005.
nah
@@leek404 What's you opinion ?
Yes he was good but until 1968-1972 other than that Fischer never was the best player in the world so a 5 year domination is not that good considering Kasparov 22 years being number 1 (in 1984-2005) in an error of Karpov (who Fischer was scared of)
Yes Morphy is no doubt one of the greatest players of all time (but if he was not American) he wouldnt be praised the way he is praised
Look at Steinitz for example (he did more for chess than Morphy) dominated for more than 30 years and was the 1st world champion
I would like more a longer period of years and faster, but anyways great work!
Sad to see the rating of Vugar Gashimov staying the same for such a long time 4:08- 4:49
RIP.
Regz Zuse sad
Did he quit at that time?
Wesley So's sudden climb to the 2nd spot is just awesome!
Meanwhile, Master (Kasparov) and Student (Carlsen) dominated the game for such a long time and with consistency.
Thanks for this video - very nicely done :-)
Thank you! I will try to make more interesting videos like this one!

It's interesting that Kramnik never reached #1 but still was a great champion 2000-2007.
Kramnik was world number 1, twice, briefly: 1996 and January 2008 (www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=12295)
Next time check before you post bullshit.
Garry kasparov has left the chat
Kudos to Vishy for being in top 5 since forever I guess
2:14 a new challenger has entered the arena
I just realized something. Magnus Carlsen is my favorite chess player and he first became number 1 on my birthday (2 December 2009) 😮
Kasparov is just amazing...I mean we think MC is great, but in 1990 Kasparov was the only one with a rating above 2800 and Karpov as 2nd was the only one with a rating above 2700.
Great comment.
Hikaru Nakamura's humor is my favorite since with xQcOW
In conclusion, Vishwanathan Anand is a vampire.
Crazy to think Sergey was insanely close to beating magnus and becoming world champion
WOW! Very nice video man. First time I find you today. Thank you!
Thanks so much! I will try to make more interesting videos like this one!
But, I thought Fabiano Caruana was from America, not Italy
Caruana played both for Italy and the USA during his career. I was expecting this video to show that by changing his country, but it remained Italy the whole time. It should be USA from 2015 onward.
Read his fucking name, does it sound like an english name?
Lorax America is not a white english immigrant monoculture. We have many cultures and races. Caruana is from New york city, which has a lot of Italian immigrant roots. Hikaru Nakamura sounds pretty dang japanese but once again, American.
@@madisonking8057 same goes to Italy , they are not a mediterranian monoculture
You americans should realise you're not the only diverse country
Actually by the most minorities inside a country,Rusia would be the most diverse(baltics, georgians, azerbijians, ukrainians, kazahks, inuits, mongols, finnish etc.) And none of these minorities identify themselfs as russian despite living there and having russian citizenship
And by english name I meant being born there
Lorax i never said other countries aren’t diverse I was simply pointing out how the fact that the name didn’t sound english means nothing.
5:50 Carlsen 2882 rating
Insane video as always, you deserve 50000000 subs
Vishy anand was there for 20 years...Such consistency 👏👌
That was fascinating to watch. You should expand it to the top 50.
Maybe for my next video about chess!
GOAT MORPHY
1-Fischer; Kasparov; Carlsen
2-Karpov;Alekhine;TAL
3-Capablanca;Kramnik/Anand;Lasker
The most important thing to note is this doesn't include retired player's final rankings and that the difference is merely a 100 points between the top and bottom. Yes that is quite bit in chess rankings but in real life, anybody could usually beat another player if they have a good game. Massive talent here.
People when Magnus Carlsen finally appeared: Well that took a while
Just absolutely loved this visual, it was fascinating to see the comparison over the years 😌👌🏼
Thank you so much!
Match between Garry and Magnus would have been an interesting one
They played in 2004 when Magnus was 13. I believe it was a rapid game, and they agreed to a draw.

Thanks! Nice idea, maybe for my next video about chess!
I could literally identify the exact spot where Nakamura began his online chess streaming.
This was a great video. I need to go check out how Magnus had done against Big Blue or whatever supercomputer that plays chess nowadays.
The top GM's don't play against computers any more, because the computers always win. They only use them to analyze positions and to prepare new opening novelties. There is a new artificial intelligence program called Alpha Zero that is estimated at around a 3400 rating. I think it's even better than that though.
Carlsen became a 2800+ player in december 2009 and never looked back.what do you mean 2700 player🤔?🤣🤣🤣

Magnus Carlsen Is the best of all time
Not yet he isn't.
Bravo Vishy!
XQC will be on next years list
Wesley So as being the greatest Filipino Chess Super Grandmaster to ever touch the board is surreal. The sudden climb to Top 2 is one of the greatest achievements a chess player could ever do in a lifetime.
It's funny that the ONLY person whose name is there in this list much before this video starts (from 1990 in fact, Kramnik entered top 20 in 1993) till the time this comment was written (Kramnik has retired at #15 and will subsequently be removed) gets no mention in the video's description. The bias is nauseating. Vishwanathan Anand is consistently the strongest player to have played in the post-engine era (1991-2019 and counting in world's TOP 15 ). What a legend!
Awesome vid. Thank you. Subscribed!
Thanks!

@@ritikeshpanda if you are asking just questions you probably shouldn't attempt this. I'm assuming the hardest thing is gathering all the data and arranging in a some type of array or maybe you were lucky and found a database.
@@deepdive1338 If only you knew how easy it can be. Just assign dynamically the width of an element (in this case rectangles, shape and color are defined using CSS) and change the width according to the ranking, the animations presented can be done using many libraries out there. The hardest part is indeed gathering the data.
@@visceras7979 that's just the surface level stuff. You gonna have to to wrap the data in some kind of loop and set it to change every second which means you will probably need some type of animation in which case you need to use canvas instead of css, it's pretty hard making a timer and making correlate with the rankings because not only do you need to gather the rankings but you also need to assign it a separate time stamp.

Kramnik is the 14th world chess champion. In 2000, Kramnik became the "classic" world champion, defeating Garry Kasparov in London. In 2004, he defended this title in a match with Peter Leko. In 2006, he won in a unifying match against the FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov. Having won the titles of world champion in “classical chess” and the world champion of FIDE, he became the 14th world champion in chess.
