- Irving begins a look at some of the worst, most delightful cartoons ever made. This series will rotate among the five superheroes: Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, The Submariner, and Captain America, in that order. Today we look at the first Iron Man episode, which introduces us to Tony Stark, Happy Hogan, and Pepper Potts.

Why didn't Pepper Potts get her own suit and become "Iron Maiden"?
She did., But she was called Rescue.
This was an excellent look at my favorite Marvel Comics superhero's debut animated series. I've been a fan of old Shell-Head for 45 years this year.
I do have two things to add about your review of the show. First, John Vernon not only performed the voice for Iron Man but he also voiced Namor in his animated series. Second, in Tales of Suspense #40, it was a girlfriend named Marion who suggested the change from the gray armor to gold to Tony Stark, not Pepper Potts.
A funny note about the transistors (Iron Man's my favorite Marvel hero) is that Stan Lee seemed to think transistors powered devices like some kind of battery. So when Iron Man or the narrator talks about Tony's transistor-powered devices it's actually powered by transistors.
I figured it was something like that. In the late 60's I think it was, he redesigned the armor with microchips (we were still calling them "integrated circuits" at that time) to boost the suit's power and all that, but he still talked about being transistor powered. When I was in the electronics club in 8th grade they wanted us to build tube-based stuff. I knew tubes were going to become obsolete real quick so I ignored that stuff and moved straight to transistor projects.
And when Titanium Man was created, I often wondered what his suit ran on. His developers complained that they didn't have Stark's method of making tiny transistors so TM's suit had to be absurdly big. Did he run on tubes????
Tony Stark sounds a lot like John Vernon, a.k.a. "Dean Wormer".

I think the Iron Man theme song is one of the better ones among this series. Bruce and Hulk may be my favorites, but the tune and lyrics of their theme song leave a lot to be desired.
Shapanka going full supervillain in the dumbest way possible is hilarious. Normally, comic book mad scientists turn to bank robbery to fund their research because they were laughed out of the company, university, scientific community, etc. But he had provable, working cryogenic tech once his cat experiment proved successful. He could've easily shown this to Tony rather than jumping straight to corporate theft. And like Irving said, there were any number of things he could've sold the tech for to achieve those funds legitimately. I think this guy just wanted to be a supervillain. XD
Yes, he didn't stop to think. The Hulk theme was my favorite, as well. My biggest gripe with the Iron Man theme is, some of the words are a little hard to catch. The Hulk theme, every word stands out. My lame ears like that.
@@dwashbur Yeah, that's actually how I feel about the Submariner theme towards the end of it. I think in my case I have trouble at times with chorale singing becoming garbled to my ears. Though some audio issues are always to be expected with several decades old media.
To me, the theme songs were created in the same style as advertisement music jingles.
Shapanka's ego, jealousy of Tony, and possibly wanting to be the only person to become age immortal using his tech.

My favorite Ironman episode is "Cliffs Of Doom" Later there are Avenger episodes too. Hulk, Submariner, Thor and Captain America too. I was seven years old when these aired in New York circa 1966-67.

I don't know how you felt about the _Iron Man_ movie in 2008, but as a non-Marvel fan, I thought it was a very well-done movie. In my opinion, there were many factors that worked together to make it an amazing blockbuster, and it's one of my favorite films to this day.
The fact that they sneaked in the original Marvel theme for Tony's first appearance shows the care Jon Favreau and his crew had for the source material. I'm glad you shared this because it just adds another layer to the movie, one that probably flew over the heads of most of the audience, including me!
I enjoyed it a lot. It was well done, the effects were great, and so was the acting. An excellent job of bringing the character to life.
@@dwashbur I somehow missed this one as a kid (I'm your age, milord) so I came in from the comics, so yes, great movie, but faithfulness to the sources, ish. Totally understandable - a true Marvel comic adaption would make Russian movies seem like short features....
It still boggles my mind that these were never released on DVD.
I would ABSOLUTELY buy each one of them just like I bought each one of the 60s Batman DVD sets when they were released.
There are bootleg DVDs of each individual series on Ebay for decent prices. I'm not violating anything by mentioning them, because I didn't actually say I bought them ;)

They did release a few episodes on VHS, which is how I first got to see this version of Iron Man and a few of the other Marvel Super Heroes episodes.
Jack Frost came before Bobby Drake the Iceman. Loved the original Iron Man. He had a different gadget every issue. Heat ray, air jet stream disks, magnetic repellers, attachable hammer, electrical force field, roller skates all preceded his repulsor rays. That’s what was cool about him.
I "came along later", and I laughed at that tune when I saw the movie in the theater. You see, in the early eighties, when I was nine or ten, my family got cable, which included WPIX out of New York...pretty far away for us South Jerseyites. That channel ran the Marvel Superhero cartoons, and all of those theme tunes were utter earworms that took up space in my brain all the way into my adulthood.
I saw these cartoons as a child in the 1970s as syndicated afternoon programming on what I think were independent TV stations out of Los Angeles. I remember the Iron Man and Sub-Mariner songs. I clearly recognized it in the Iron Man movie.
Iron Man was my favorite of this series.
The first comic I read with Iron Man featured the Melter, and he used his first gen suit (it was already a museum piece, but it was available when his next gen one wasn't). I wasn't impressed with The Melter. I think the only other time I saw him was when he had developed his latest version of his melting ray... only to be unceremoniously killed by the Scourge of the Underworld (then again, most of Scourge's kills were ambush hits. He believed in winning, not fighting).
I think I read that Stan Lee wasn't totally sold on Robert Downey Junior in the role at first. He thought the actor should be like Howard Hughes, not Charlie Chaplin.
So, to put it into certain words.... The folks making these shows... They were making comic dubs before it was cool.
The animation was less than cheesy
The guy that does the voice of Iron Man was Dean Wormer in Animal House years later.
In the comics, during the late 80s, Tony once said he came up with a few dozen uses for Melter's melting beam technology. If he had just come to Tony with the tech he would have earned millions sitting back collecting the royalty checks. The same thing could have applied to the Living Laser and of course, this Jack Frost who is later renamed Blizzard.

Iron Man was mine... I was eight... turning nine (yrs old) when this program debuted in 1966!

That's John Vernon as Tony. he was a great character actor, who played the dean in Animal House.
Thanks for that flashback. You didn't do any of the series that I suggested, but I am actually looking more forward to learning about one that I never heard of even more! (And you are still doing the Flash-a series that I do know. Sadly, I only remember 2 things about it, so everything else is new.) I remember one episode with a frozen villain, and the hero of the time was Black, and that Luke Skywalker is a baddie in it (the actor, not the character)

I know this mighty be a royal pain. But could you look into doing the Hanna and Barbara 60's version of the Fantastic Four and maybe be even the 60's version of Space Ghost, Miighty mightor, and a few other H&B Space Superhero cartoons of the 60" s. They sure get forgotten. Because of the time frame and the massive reusing of past cell material. Like in the ending credits of filmation's Batman and Robin.
They didn't use Pepper from ToS #45 so much.
Oh! Pepper didn't suggest that gold change. That's a quickly- dropped gf in ,TOS#40.

I bought some bootleg DVDs on Ebay. I don't usually engage in such things, but when there's no choice, one becomes flexible in many things.
I like Cyclops and Wolverine and the rest of the XMen
The X-Men were my favorites, but Wolverine hadn't come along yet when I was reading them. Back then it was still the original five: Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, and Marvel Girl. And Beast hadn't turned blue yet.
Loved these when I was a kid. Except for the Sub-Mariner. Always skipped these. Wish they had done Daredevil instead. Namor was such a dull character. Better as a villain.

❤❤❤😅❤❤ hello my friend how are you I hope you are doing well what a surprise I'm an Ironman fan to I really didn't get into the cartoon much but it was still good now that you're going to be doing them it's going to be like watching it for the first time I didn't write yesterday because I was overtired and I knew that you probably tied up just to let you know I did do the house over again and the Terrace looks wonderful now and I even did the roofing know what the real thing I got right on the first try and I found the right color for it we're doing three stories I put flower boxes in the two windows but I don't know if I'm going to keep him that way or if I'm going to change the windows all together I had the rooms all divided but I still don't know what's going where yet I'll probably be working on it again around 2 so we'll just have to see what comes up let me when you can I can't wait for another surprise you're full of them love you so much Jojo
Yesterday was interesting, to say the least. I'm going to look pretty bad for a couple of weeks, but don't fret, it's all superficial. I was moving our 90 gallon trash bin, which was full, and it started to tip over. When I grabbed it, I accidentally stepped on the open lid that was hanging down. That both threw me off balance, and yanked the bin toward me. The edge of it and my face collided in the middle. I have a nice big gash on my forehead, a black eye, and a cut on my nose, that's the stuff that's visible. They couldn't stitch my forehead up because the skin is gone. That thing dug a divot out of my head. So it's special medication and bandages until it heals over. I should have an impressive scar when it's done, at least impressive until I tell someone how I got it! I spent 2 1/2 hours in the emergency room. They did a CAT scan to make sure I didn't break any bones or damage my brain, but head is hard enough to withstand a lot. It's just another bizarre way I found to hurt myself. I have aches and bruises, but it will all pass. So don't worry, I'm okay. A little embarrassed, but otherwise I'm fine. I wanted to let you know ahead of time so you don't start to worry when you see me.
Flower boxes? I like it. I like color and life around me, so that sounds very nice.
I'm hoping to take my electric guitar to the jam this coming Monday and play a couple of my blues songs. We'll see what I'm able to do while everything is healing up. But I do plan to be at karaoke tomorrow night. Any requests? I know they don't have Slow Dancing, which bums me out a little, but if you have something else you'd like to hear, I'll see if they have it.

I'm fine. I had to sit around for 45 minutes while they read the CAT scan, but after that they put some special stuff on my divot, superglued the cut on my nose shut, and sent me home. By this morning even the headache was gone. I have a couple of bruises and this thing on my forehead is going to leave an impressive scar, but I don't mind. I have a lot of scars on my hands, too. I intend to donate my body to a medical school when I'm done with it, and I want some student to look at my hands and say "These hands LIVED." They may as well say it about my face, too! There wasn't much choice about getting looked at, when my nurse speaks, I obey. I was bleeding pretty good and could barely stand. I know I was a little concussed, but it must not have been too bad because today the headache is gone.
We went out tonight and wound up at another karaoke place. There were only about a dozen people there, but I sang Pride and Joy to Kathy anyway. I love that song. I do change one line. It says "love my lady, she's long and lean, you mess with her you'll see a man get mean." Well, Kathy isn't long, and neither of us is lean. So I say "I love my baby, she's all I need, you mess with her your a** belongs to me!"
Did those guys get your chair fixed? I assume your knee is well now, too. Let me know, dear friend.
@@dwashbur 💝💝💝🐭😍🎑 sorry to answer your message so late but I just found it yes the wheelchairs all fixed up I'm just trying to avoid banging into anyting my knee is feeling much better still a little bit of pain if I'm on it for too long I'll be getting it checked again on the 25th of May right now it's making it hard for me are the bladder spasms that I'm having I don't feel very comfortable right now spasms have been bothering me all day and my feet hurt I've been on them way too much I'm getting ready for bed right now I just got done watching Baywatch nights on UA-cam but I have been mostly concerned about you nothing else matters you are extremely important to me and you've been on my mind all night long I just spent the good Lord that you're okay could you do me a big favor? I'm doing all right, though I look more like a raccoon today even than I did yesterday. I didn't make it to karaoke, wasn't feeling up to it. My eyes were so puffy I felt like I was sleepy. It was weird. I spent most of today singing my own songs with Linda critiquing. It's hard work but so worth it when I eventually see this CD in print. Tomorrow night at the jam I'm hoping to sing a couple of songs from it. Sorry, it's late, and I keep losing my train of thought. Until tomorrow.
