Get a mulcher/chipper for all the olive tree cuttings. Use the mulch around trees will help retain the water in the soil over the hot summer, and as it breaks down and composts it feeds the plants and improves the soil. Burning it would be a waste.
Rather than spend money on a chipper, you can contact a tree trimming service. They usually have to pay to dump their chips, so they may give you chips for free.
Was super worried for a minute until you were carrying on and improving the land! Don't scare us like that. 😂 It's all looking so much better, you should be super proud of yourselves.
Hi guys I don’t think that gravel will sort the problem out when it rains hard, I really needed some hardcore under the membrane otherwise the membrane will just sink into the wet soil and you will still have deep ruts.
Thanks for the Vlogs & LOL’s on the “Dirt Cheap” Mr. Dan.. 😂😂😂😜😬😬😬 keep up the good work & can’t wait for all your accomplishments through your off grid journey.. 😊👍🙏
Hi Dan and Laura! What a great accomplishment to be able able to drive up vs having to use a wheelbarrow. Your home looks amazing and always so beautiful. Woot Mom is here! I feel it is important to have your Mother share this with you and get a better understanding of what you two do day to day. God bless you all mightily! Love from our family to yours! ~John
I bet your Mam will be so proud of you both and I am sure since you are her daughter that she is not afraid of a bit of labour. Thank you so much for these videos.
Drumroll for Dan with the dad jokes! Loved the first track on this video too.. well done both! Laura needs to up her shovel/ sprint game... much love from a very rainy Wales!! 😢
Suggestion: dig out 4 place for 4 Concrete blocks in the ground..place some gravel.. then the blocks in the dugouts then place 2 RV Camper ramp Levelers on to the concrete block and park the Camper ontop of the Camper leveler (strategically because the back tires would be easy to pull up on the ramp.. but the front ones might need either 2 Jacks or you might need to move the camper back n forth.) you will need 4 ramp levelers and the levelers must support 11 to 15000lbs of weight so next time the camper is not stuck in mud. Regards from Singapore.
You might check the available bags of lime dust in your area. When mix in with soil it works like concrete to firm up muddy areas. In smaller quantities it can be helpful in vegetable gardens to adjust PH levels. It's sold in bags like concrete and much cheaper. Lime is one of the components in concrete like portland.
Good idea to drive the truck to get the tracks, how annoying would it have been to lay all the gravel only for the tracks to be the wrong width. Things are getting more manageable day by day, week by week.
Watching you guys is a welcome breakaway from the gloom and doom of UK crappyness. I've booked my tickets for June to come house hunting in central Portugal region and start the process for a visa and then retirement, with a bit of beekeeping. I love watching you make your way and just wish I had had the same foresight years ago. Mums can work harder and longer than you think so push her on 😉
You two are so inspiring. You work so hard and have such great attitudes and humor. I really enjoy watching your videos. And how nice to have your mom there for a visit! I look forward to the next video😊
Hi guys, we live totally off grid here in Central Portugal, its always worth trying your local building supplier for brita etc, they are usually a decent price and deliver. Good luck with your ventures.
Another lovely video Laura & Dan, great to cheer me up. I am sorry to hear you need to live there permanently 5 years to get residency. I wonder if it might get easier if you manage to get a permanent job there for the 5 years required. Progress on the land would get slower but you'd probably solve the issues that way. Great idea for the stones. Things will cettainly get easier. Wishing you both some great time with Laura s Mum and will keep in touch next week. Thanks very much for your kind message earlier. 💚😊🙏👍
I'm glad you didn't go with the gravel in just the ruts. Now as it starts to compress and slowly wash away you have more choices on where to drive. Good job guys! I see your weather is like ours. From T-shirt one minute to sweat shirt the next!
Hey friends, this is what I love about Laura, she is really in the land, she just wanted to be at the land, love you for that, Dan you won't regret this, you really have a great and genuine woman for your partner she'll stand by you man ❤❤❤👍👍🇯🇲🇯🇲
No burn it... Pile it up then wait ... then some straw.... then wait.....then some more straw.. then wait.... then some potting mix and sand and perlite mixed in the wheel-barra.. and just put in the spots going to plant new plants... food forest... need to see you guys map of the land... like where shade trees will be and fruiting trees and where housing will be and nursery/vegy sprouting area.... great work anyway
Enjoy visiting with your mam, and i hope she has a nice time. Hopefully, it will put her mind at ease when she sees how content you are on your land, even though it is hard work x
Hi Laura and Dan. Absolutely love your films. I m not a lover of cities either. Love the countryside. You guys are a inspiration to us all . All the Very best life can give you both Kind regards Chris
Well done guys with all your hard work. Thankyou for showing us Lisbon. I know exactly how you feel . Once you've lived in a remote place (as we do) the city doesn't have the same appeal. When we go shopping in Carlisle, I'm always glad to get back over the border to our farm and the peace and quiet. I'm going to Newcastle on Saturday to a show so will say hello for you! Take care xx
Just found your channel and have binge watched some of the videos. Love your land and the way you value and preserve the history....also the way you reuse found items. I have no desire to be off grid but I do live very close to nature and animals on a small hobby farm. I look forward to watching you develop your homestead and wish you much happiness there.
Lora you mom is so cute don't work her to hard we want her back great job on the driveway on the property nice video and can't wait for next video keep up the good work.
Hai Laura & Dan....wishing both of you to be in great and energetic condition always. I followed your videos and here would like to give you some ideas. You guys been regularly buying some construction materials such as cement, sand, gravel etc. Fyi, you actually can save a lot if you guys are buying gravel in a big load compare to that small forklift scope...try recalculate back of all previous spending and find out yourself
I think that tail gate will lift right off the truck. Just take the cables off first. Then it will lift right off. It will just make the shoveling easy out the back end of the truck. Glad to see the gravel going in. Like you said, now you will ditched to keep the road in good repair. What is on the long list of next chores? Later
Watch every video and always you two make me smile. If you ever have the time go to my own town Tomar. Is gorgeous. I miss it so much but here in Ireland is nice too. Keep up with the good work and don't forget (like you said) put the mother in law to work. ha
It’s amazing to me how you can almost do anything on your land in Portugal. In the what you have been doing would be classed as engineering above or under ground and would need planning permission. 👍
You guys worked hard on that road, well done!! I enjoy Lisbon for a day or two at max, but could never live in that big city! Can you share where that little shop was with the books and stuff?
@@theoriginhomestead A pretty decent price I belive. Would it have been cheaper having a heavy truck coming with 10 times more gravel? Maybe they can't get to your place!? In what region are your place situated? I don't ask for the exact position as I understand and respect your privacy. I was in the CB region at Cindy Wine's pigfarm last fall with my Ford Transit bus that I converted to a home, just like your van, and🚐🎸🇸🇪 doing a little volunteer work and I enjoyed so much the people in that little village. Rickard.
Hello, Tx for the great channel. Can you guys plz elaborate more about the permits that you have to do the projects? i.e do you have habitational license? projects lisnece etc. Also. how big is your land? Many tx.
I think you should do some research on the pre 1951 ruling . I watched a very good video on YT about it last week. What you've done is nice but I think you need planning permission . You should go to your local camara and check before you waste anymore time and money kids!
I'm just a few miles up the road from Newcastle - it's great to see you guys making a go of this. I put an offer in recently on a proeprty in Portugal but it was contingent on a habitation license being granted, which ended up being refused. The admin paperwork and bureaucracy is arguably more of a headache than the physical labour ! Strength to your arm(s)

Dear
Laura and Dan, you need a trailer for this truck. This will save you some trips and save your truck. All the best.

I enjoy it, Waitimg to see Laura's Mum on work

Hi guys I don’t think that gravel will sort the problem out when it rains hard, I really needed some hardcore under the membrane otherwise the membrane will just sink into the wet soil and you will still have deep ruts.
Hardcore will serve to drain the water - working a bit like a 'french drain' does

My thoughts exactly! although it didn't work out quite as planned when the back tyres spun out 😆

everything you do is wonderful try to place larger stones on the side of the built road to avoid spreading small stones
Great advice, thanks so much 💖
I am only seven minutes in and already I am thinking that that is one heck of a lot of work! My respect indeed for your determined efforts.
Love that thanks Dallas
The driveway is finished, Now the palace. Love to u guys.

Were you able to urbanize the barn with the council?
💕
Shovelling gravel is hard - I've done it! It helps if you have a nice strong core I must admit. You're both going to be tough as nuts soon!
