The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller ... you really have to finish this book when you're in the mood :) I really enjoyed it (especially the mythology in the story)
I finished reading The Poppy War yesterday and please be aware that basically every single trigger warning you can imagine is applicable, so if you're a teen or are particularly sensitive, this isn't a book for you I'm afraid. I am serious, guys - self-harm, rape (including a pregnant woman at one point - just so you know), all kinds of violence and cruelty, and all very graphic! So please take that into account that this is a book about war and war crimes commited by ruthless, heartless people, and the contents do mirror that. Other than that, a really good book, made me think, asked some interesting questions, I gave it a 4.5/5 stars C:
I loved 'And every morning the way home gets longer and longer'. Its a novella about a grandfather who has Alzheimer's. His loved ones are trying to cope with this change. It was so heartbreaking and emotional, for such a short read. Also I am loving 'To kill a mockingbird'. I am buddy reading that one with another booktuber.
I'm sitting sick in bed and I can hardly move without fainting, and seeing you posted this video made me smile for the first time in hours upon hours (which really tells of how much I love your channel). Thank you for cheering me up
Love this series! Great book suggestions! With online shopping it’s so hard to find books I want to read...the selection can be overwhelming. You make it so much easier, thank you!
I just finished Seven Husbands of a Evelyn Hugo and loved it so much!! I really hope HBO makes into a show or movie! I recently bought The Poppy War and I can’t wait to start it!!! I’ve heard such amazing things about this book!! 🙌🏼
This is quickly becoming my favorite UA-cam channel every time I get in a reading slump your videos make me excited again! I bought the poppy war when I saw your readathon and I’m loving it so much!
I'm dying to re-read Pride & Prejudice, especially since I bought the beautiful new edition (the same edition as the Emma you have). They are gorgeous! Need them all! Seriously...how cool is your library...it has good books!
Tbh I'm not sure what I would mention. I usually tend to recommend starting with books you've already read in your language then YA books since there are easier!
I got into Brandon Sanderson because of your reviews so I can't wait to read the Poppy Wars! I love your videos. Thank you for being so honest in your reviews! ❤️
i just finished the poppy war & I thought it was such a unique & enjoyable fantasy!! I personally thought that the magic system needed more clarification but I definitely agree that it's going to be the next big fantasy!
I loved the Immortalists. It had a very interesting premise but I wasn't expecting to connect to the characters the way I did and get so emotional reading it. Beautiful book.
I’m so glad you loved Emma! It’s one of my favourites 😁 My fave read this month was the Touchstone Trilogy by Andrea K Host, a YA sci-fi that I was actually really impressed by.
For thrillers I can recommend Stillhouse Lake. I had to take a break from thrillers recently because I had read a few disappointing or just plain bad ones last year, similarly to you, but that one surprised me. Finally a female character in a thriller that was badass and not an alcoholic! 😁
I definitely agree that Stephen King's endings always fall a little flat, which is why I always hesitate to pick up another, especially as they are so long. Saving some for October though, need to start getting through that stack.
Haha! I actually liked the "The Cruel Prince". I just finished reading it this morning. It was an easy read and I demolished the book in a day and a half. I don't read a lot of YA books, so maybe that is why I liked it??? I am looking forward to the sequel, "The Wicked King" which should be out in January. I have also just read "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and enjoyed it, as well. It was different from my normal reading pursuits and found it to be a quick read. I have put "The Poppy War" on my list of books to read!!!
I finished the last book in the Themis files a few minutes ago and I liked it quite a bit! It is too bad that you were disappointed with it, that is the worst when you really like the rest of the series. I read the books while listening to the audiobooks, by the way. :)
BookswithEmilyFox The Name of the Wind was the first fantasy book I’ve ever read (and HIGH fantasy at that! I’m surprised I was able to follow along lol I’m usually not good at remembering things as I read so me following along with this one is surprising for me.) I loved it but I don’t want to be left hanging because it’s been soooooo long since the 2nd book and who KNOWS when book 3 is coming out!
I’m so glad you liked Emma! Did you know the movie Clueless is an adaptation? It’s so fun watching it again knowing that it’s an adaptation. Some of the literary devices like the constant miscommunication and conversations throughout the book where both people think they’re having completely different conversations while they’re talking to each other are in the movie too. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, but I would recommend. ❤️
My biggest gripe with The Cruel Prince was that it felt like backstory. It was all build up to the actual book Holly Black wanted to write. I read 300 pages of a 370 page book before anything happened and now I need to buy another book if I want the real story? No thanks. If a story needs that much build up make it a 600 page book - don't split it in half and call it two books when it's not. People are more likely to read a huge book than to read one boring one and be compelled to pick up the next!
Yaaaaaas It's one of my pet peeves with YA books! Too many first books feel like prologues. Shatter Me was like that and even La Belle Sauvage... stop splitting books so much!
I’m currently reading the second book in the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. I read the first one in June and absolutely loved it and this one is just as amazing so far. They are quite big books and I know you have a couple of those to read before the end of the year, but if you ever have time, I absolutely recommend it. It’s the best fantasy I’ve read in a long time. I will try to pick up The Poppy War as soon as I can. You totally sold me on it.
So glad you loved the poppy war!! It’s going to be massive. I completely agree with the outsiders ending. I was like oh! Is that it? Very anticlimactic. Best books I’ve read this month are Dark Pines, 1Q84, the Themis Files trilogy, The Deathless and now reading Children Of Blood And Bone.
I just finished The humans by Matt Haig, I rarely read any Sci-fi (rarely is understatement because I read only 2 Sci-fi book in my entire life). But because you really like this, so I picked it up! The Sci-fi on it was mild, so it suitable for me!! I feel like I can read more Sci-fi because of you.
Yay! So happy you like it too :D I think the sci-fi genre is intimidating because it's so vast and some are really intense but some are very easy to start with! I'll definitely continue doing recommendations for beginner friendly ones!
I'm glad that you enjoyed Emma since it is my favorite Jane Austen novel. And I agree with you on The Outsider. The beginning is really strong and had me very invested into the story, but towards the middle it became a bit slow and the end was okay in my opinion, I did expect more from the ending though. I haven't been able to read as much as I would like to. I pick up books, but after like 50 pages I put them down again.
1. I am now excited to pick up The Poppy War! 2. Your opinion on The Wife Between Us was my opinion on The Woman In The Window - another alcoholic woman; and a twist that I saw coming from the very beginning of the book, and literally laughed out loud when it was revealed. 3. Another great video from you. I love it!
For f/f romances, I definitely recommend checking out Nina LaCour and Ashley Herring Blake, and a YA fantasy that has a f/f romance I really like was 'Girls Made Of Snow And Glass'!
Couldn't agree more with you on The poppy war, I am half way through it and already given it 5 🌟 .This is first fantasy book read by in this year and it's a great start.

I'm so glad that you liked To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Leah on the Offbeat! TATBILB is one of my favorite series and Simon VS is one of my favorite books! I didn't like Leah on the Offbeat as much as Simon VS, but I agree with everything you said!
I felt the same way about The Cruel Prince!! I picked it up because of the hype but ended up so bored and disappointed. I can’t wait to read Leah on the Offbeat though! ☺️💕
The best books I read were the two books in the The Licanius Trilogy. The titles were The Shadow of What Was Lost (the first book) and An Echo of Things to Come. Its by James Islington. Outstanding fantasy series. The third book is slated to come out in February of next year. They are very long books but its a fast read. I highly recommend.
The Poppy War clan girllll! Oh, glad to see that you loved All Systems Red, I heard a lot of great things about it and probably will read it really soon too! As for my favorite read of June and July: June: City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett, Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames, Lancelot by Giles Kristian July: Mistborn trilogy reread!!! :D
I think you should read the sequel of to all the boys i have loved before .It is so good and fun fluffy read and it is also one of my favourite contemporary book as I am not the biggest fan of the genre.
My favourite thriller and probably favourite book of all time is the devotion of suspect x, the ending completely took me by surprise and i thought it was fantastic! So you should check it out as i also get bored by most thrillers
I actually really, really enjoyed The Cruel Prince (I gave it 4/5 stars on Goodreads), but I can definitely see why someone else wouldn't like it. I think I'd be hesitant to recommend it to someone unless I was familiar with their tastes. I'm going to be picking up The Poppy War whenever I can get my hands on a copy, it seems really interesting.
SPOILER!!!! I absolutely agree with your opinion of the Only Human - I really liked the first two book, but the third one was purely disappointing. I mean they were living with whatever they were living with for 9 years! And they were talking about it like they were just hopping to a slightly interesting tropical island or anything... It was bad.
Im currently half way through Poppy War right now and Im enjoying it. Just waiting for it to get dark like everyone says it is. Seafire by Natalie Parker was my fav book of June. Best pirate book Ive ever read and Ive read quite a few.
Always looking forward to your wrap ups ! The best book I've read last month is The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. I know that you already have the Inheritance Trilogy and can't wait to hear your opinion about it, but I decided to start with the The Broken Earth Trilogy and can't recommend it enough. (btw the second book is 6 US$ on bookdepository :) -just ordered it)
I thought I would feel the same about PS I Love You and Always and Forever Lara Jean, but they were both great! I didn't feel like either stretched the series; they were nice additions.
I thought I was the unpopular opinion when it came to The Wife Between Us. I didn’t really like it at all. It had unnecessary twists which I think were meant to “shock” the reader, but even though I wasn’t expecting them, it didn’t “shock” me. My reaction was literally “oh....ok...I guess.” It was more confusing as to why it was even necessary😂 It was an ok book, I’m so happy I’m not alone in my opinion😂
To all the boys I loved before was acutally a duology. After the second book was published the author decided to write a third one even if the second had an ending. I decided not to read the third one but I can't wait to hear your opinion if you do!
I'm reading The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien right now, definitely going to be my big book of the year it's not one you can just breeze through lol. I'm also reading Shirley Temple Black's autobiography Child Star which is really good if you like autobiographies 👍
Hey Emily. How are you? I have not read or listened to any of those books that you mentioned. So, I will have to check a few of them out. I am as of this summer, have been working on reading 2 massage therapy textbooks. I have been a professional massage therapist for the past 7 years, and in order to maintain my license, I have to take 12 hours of CEU classes. So, I am reading the Fibromayalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain Handbook and the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. They are both really interesting. Also, for fun, I am also listening to the first book in the Crazy Rich Asians series by Kevin Kwan. This is also a fun and informative book with a not too heavy romance. I also just recently finished listening to the book Jim Henson A Biography by Brian Jay Jones. That was really eye opening. I have also taken a glimpse of the audio book Schultz and Peanuts a Biography by David Michaelis. I am also looking forward to listening to the book George Lucas A Life by Brian Jay Jones. I love Star Wars and the whole concept of the Force, so I thought that I would check that out. Yeah, it is odd, for it used to be the kiss of death for me to be assigned to read a biography when I was in school, but now that is changing. I am also going to try getting back to finishing the Gentleman Greatcoats series by Sebastien De Castell. I also do want to get to the Ken Liu series, and to the City of Brass and the Poppy War. I will drop you a note and let you know when I start working on those. Happy reading.
There are plenty of F/F romance books out there but admittedly most of them, or at least the ones I’ve read, aren’t very good or are just okay. Hopefully there will be more choices in the future.
My favorites in June were Lady Susan by Jane Austen, The song of Achilles By: Madeline Miller and The seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This is super crazy for me cause I usually don’t like any type of romance (I love sci-fi and epic fantasy) but I loved these so so much!!
I loved The Wife Between Us but the ending did throw me for a loop. The Woman in the Window was too much like jimmy Stewart's Rear Window. I dnf'd it. ( oops I'm showing my age) I just finished Hum If you Don't Know The Words by Bianca Marais and I loved it so much.
Oh I've been trying to find it! I want the edition that match the ones I have on my shelf so it's been a struggle haha I think I'll get it on book depository!
If you want to read more girl on girl romance you should check out Sarah Waters. I would recommend starting with either Tipping the Velvet or Fingersmith.
I recently read To All The Boys and made the decision to leave it as a stand alone. I read the first 40 pages and skimmed the ending of the sequel. I ended up donating P.S. I Still Love You as I wasn't liking where the story headed and now pretend it never happened. 😅
I think that this hype of domestic thrillers is because of the popularity of Gone Girl and Woman On A Train. I didn't read either but so many people raved about both, and then the movies came out and people raved more... idk. I don't read thrillers so I'm not the best judge.
i think your problem with 'the cruel prince' might've been the audiobooks fault because the people i've seen who don't like it were the ones who listened to it on audiobook. i gave it 5/5 stars! i loved it haha (-':
What you fear about Lara Jean is how my experience was with the trilogy, the first one was like a 3 star read and the series went downhill for me, it could have been a standalone.
I just finished The Poppy War yesterday! I thought it was really good! I felt like it was missing a little world building but I would totally recommend it to fantasy lovers! I couldn’t put it down! And yes Stephen King’s books are all in one universe
Okay, 'The Poppy War' is getting rave reviews from everyone who's really into fantasy, so I feel that I need to add it to my collection pretty soon. I just read 'Legion' this month and sadly I really didn't like it. I'm mentioning it in my August Wrap-up that'll go online this Thursday, but I'm totally blaming myself for this, as the detective genre is really my least favorite genre. Also because it was so short, I ended up feeling like the whole thing was just rushed. I'll hopefully be picking up Elantris in September so I hope that I'll eb able to start raving about Brandon Sanderson again afterwards :)
I hate when the last book in a series is the worst! I'm disappointed to hear Only Human wasn't as good as the first, but I guess I won't be rushing out to read it. Unlike The Poppy War-I can't wait to get my hands on that! :D
What's the best book you've read in the last month?
Mistborn, the final empire omg this book is amazing
Wuthering heights for sure
BookswithEmilyFox The female of the Species
Read ‘the seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle’ as per your recommendation...and LOVED IT..💕
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller ... you really have to finish this book when you're in the mood :) I really enjoyed it (especially the mythology in the story)
I should have made it clearer in this video (I do mention it on goodreads!) but considering it's inspired by the Rape of Nanking, it's grim!
Thanks for the warning!
I've just started reading The Poppy War because of your hype! 😊
Thank you for cheering me up
I started reading the poppy war yesterday, a little over half way, waiting in anticipation for work to end so i can finish it.
I am loving it!!
Totally agree with you on the thriller front -- I recently read "Woman in the Window" and "Woman in Cabin 10" and I couldn't stand either of them!
I like the diversity and variety of books you've read.. your my fave booktuber
I’m so happy you’re enjoying it!!
I'm dying to re-read Pride & Prejudice, especially since I bought the beautiful new edition (the same edition as the Emma you have). They are gorgeous! Need them all! Seriously...how cool is your library...it has good books!
Emily, your videos make me want to read more books!
Great you loved “Emma”! I want that edition 🙂 My favourite by Jane Austen is “Persuasion” - OR “Northanger Abbey” - it’s hard to choose 😁
I haven't read them but I need to!!
You should do a book haul for people who are just learning English, easy reads, good book to help with vocabulary!? Just an idea...
Yana Bell maybe with french too. I really could use some easy to read french literature
I’m halfway through The Poppy Wars at the moment and really enjoying it 😃
i just finished the poppy war & I thought it was such a unique & enjoyable fantasy!! I personally thought that the magic system needed more clarification but I definitely agree that it's going to be the next big fantasy!
I loved the Immortalists. It had a very interesting premise but I wasn't expecting to connect to the characters the way I did and get so emotional reading it. Beautiful book.
It was so much more sad that I expected too :(
Definitely giving The Poppy War a try since I've been looking for a new fantasy to read.
Ok you convinced me to read The Poppy War. Really excited to see if it will save me from my fantasy reading slump!
I read book 4 through 6 of the Riyria Revelations and OMG. All 5 stars. And the ending - I am speechless.
Ok I was going back and forth about The Poppy War, but now that I know there’s no romance in it, I think I’m sold.
I definitely agree that Stephen King's endings always fall a little flat, which is why I always hesitate to pick up another, especially as they are so long. Saving some for October though, need to start getting through that stack.
yes yes yes i'm in the middle of the poppy war book already! and yes so far so good!
The PS. I love you... the second one is my favorite. It reminded me of falling in love for the first time.
Haha! I actually liked the "The Cruel Prince". I just finished reading it this morning. It was an easy read and I demolished the book in a day and a half. I love Emma! I’ve read it probably 3 times.
I finished the last book in the Themis files a few minutes ago and I liked it quite a bit! It is too bad that you were disappointed with it, that is the worst when you really like the rest of the series. I read the books while listening to the audiobooks, by the way. :)
I currently have The Poppy War on hold at my library. I'm super excited! Also, I finished the first Mistborn book and I am in love!
I really hope you'll love it :D
The Shade,oh the shade thrown at Pat Rothfuss 😂😂😂
I’m very salty because I refuse to read the book until book 3 is announced!
I’m dying to read it because I’m sure I’ll love it but damn it...!!!
BookswithEmilyFox The Name of the Wind was the first fantasy book I’ve ever read (and HIGH fantasy at that! Some of the literary devices like the constant miscommunication and conversations throughout the book where both people think they’re having completely different conversations while they’re talking to each other are in the movie too. You should definitely continue reading To All The Boys I’ve Loved before series !!!
I’m in the middle of the last book
I’m currently reading the second book in the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. I read the first one in June and absolutely loved it and this one is just as amazing so far. They are quite big books and I know you have a couple of those to read before the end of the year, but if you ever have time, I absolutely recommend it. BookswithEmilyFox yes!! Thank you! I hope you continue to do that! That really helps everyone who want to try Sci-fi!
I'm definitely going to check out Rendezvous with Rama and All Systems Red because they sound really good.
I'm glad that you enjoyed Emma since it is my favorite Jane Austen novel. And I agree with you on The Outsider. The beginning is really strong and had me very invested into the story, but towards the middle it became a bit slow and the end was okay in my opinion, I did expect more from the ending though. 3. Another great video from you. I love it!
I read both of them not too far from each other so I was extra salty about it haha
Haha me too. Agree with both of you so much.
I bought The Outsider for my Dad for Fathers Day last month, I’m hoping he hurries up and reads I do I can read it after him!

Emma is my favorite book by Jane Austen! And I loved To all the boys I've loved before, I really liked the trilogy.
The video I was waiting for !!!
I felt the same way about The Cruel Prince!! I picked it up because of the hype but ended up so bored and disappointed. I can’t wait to read Leah on the Offbeat though! ☺️💕

Thanks Emily for your recommendations and opinions 🤓
The Poppy War clan girllll! Oh, glad to see that you loved All Systems Red, I heard a lot of great things about it and probably will read it really soon too! As for my favorite read of June and July:
June: City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett, Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames, Lancelot by Giles Kristian
July: Mistborn trilogy reread!!! :D
Yaaaaaaaaaaaas for some reason I‘ve been waiting for this!!!! ❤️❤️😇
I loved All Systems Red! The sequel holds up, too. They're great palate cleansers in between larger epic fantasy novels.
I have read all three Jenny Han books and they are all great.
Read the rest of to all the boys I've loved before :) it gets better
I have The Poppy War reserved with my library. It's a six week wait and I want to read it so much.
It will be worth the wait for sure!
Seems to be the third book in a series, is it necessary to read the other ones first?
I haven’t read the other ones, I think they are different stories :)
To all the boys i ever loved is so cute! I didn't think I'd like it with but I got hooked read all 3 totally worth the read hope u try um
I'm currently on Chapter 8 of the poppy war... Loving it so far. The audio book is great for it too btw. :)
It's good to know the audiobook is good too :D
You are really underrated! love the content on this channel
It was bad.
Daaaang you killed it!
Agreed on Cruel Prince. People rave about her writing so I thought I would give this one a shot. By the end I was like, eh. 🤷🏻♀️
Totally agree about the Themis Files!
I had such high hopes!! The author is also French Canadian so I was so happy haha
I highly recommend Good Omens if you like Comedy books.
Im currently half way through Poppy War right now and Im enjoying it. Just waiting for it to get dark like everyone says it is. Seafire by Natalie Parker was my fav book of June. Best pirate book Ive ever read and Ive read quite a few.
I think it's chapter 21 where things hit the fan properly... prepare for the grim stuff :/
Yay! I’m really hoping I’ll feel the same!
I thought I was the unpopular opinion when it came to The Wife Between Us.
I didn’t really like it at all. It had unnecessary twists which I think were meant to “shock” the reader, but even though I wasn’t expecting them, it didn’t “shock” me. My reaction was literally “oh....ok...I guess.” It was more confusing as to why it was even necessary😂
It was an ok book, I’m so happy I’m not alone in my opinion😂
You should check out The Tiger's Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera I hear it has really good F/F romance.
Ok, I’m convinced, I’m reading The Poppy War!
Just be prepare for the grim stuff haha
I LOVE all things Austen.
So excited to read Poppy War 😁😁😁😁😁🤩
I just finished To all the boys I’ve loved before like 20 minutes ago!!
Hey! Sorry if you've already read it and I missed you mentioning it, but I highly recommend Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke.
Oh I've been trying to find it! I want the edition that match the ones I have on my shelf so it's been a struggle haha
I think I'll get it on book depository!
Yes loved all systems red because of you.
If you want to read more girl on girl romance you should check out Sarah Waters. I would recommend starting with either Tipping the Velvet or Fingersmith.
To all the boys I've loved before!!! 💯 I mean if Emily read it and didn't hate it we are good!
I saw it as the main character coming from a small village and then only slowly learning about the world/gods. Hopefully we'll get more in book 2 :)
BookswithEmilyFox I agree. And we only know what the character knows. So we’re always on the same page as Rin and learning along with her.
I can’t wait til you read seven eves!
It’s so big! I’m totally intimidated!
Girl it’s good! 👌🏼
I'm sure you already know this... Clueless is a version of Emma
I always watch your videos and just realized I was never subscribed 😅 I am now! ^_^
