The B-29's Failed Backup That Saw The Last Combat of WWII - The B-32 Dominator Heavy Bomber

  • This is the story of the B-32 - a plane that was meant to be a surefire hit should the not-so-surefire B-29 fail. It ended up being a massive failure and dangerous to the crews that flew it, even though it had matching specifications with the B-29.

A lot of the 'class of 1945' were cancelled. I can't say prematurely, they just weren't needed once Japan surrendered. Tanks, fighters, this bomber, battleships-quite a few projects. That might make a good video.

Great documentary, with many facts and film I have never seen before! I love learning about the "back up" systems that were less publicized.

To call the B-32 a "failed backup" is not a fair assessment. The Army Air Corps got exactly what they ordered from Consolidated (later known as 'Convair'). The B-32 used "current" (proven) technology, unlike the B-29 which used much more expensive "cutting edge" technology. The problem with the engines catching fire was an issue which plagued both the 29 and the 32, so the problem was the engines, not the planes themselves. The B-29 received way more funding and resources than the 32. Consolidated made a very good super heavy bomber which carried just as much of a bomb load and flew just as fast and just as far as the B-29. This was not an "inferior" plane. Consolidated actually accomplished a lot, considering how few resources and finding they were given. Not only that, the B-32 served to be a 'transitional' phase to the later, much larger and more sophisticated B-36 Peacemaker which was the largest bomber we ever built. The B-32 would have been able to deliver the atomic bomb if the B-29 had not been available. The B-32 did fly a couple of missions very late in the War. Had the War gone on longer, the B-32 would have proven itself as the B-29 did. It was a successful "backup plan" to the B-29. That was what it was designed for. The Army Air Corps got exactly what they had requested with the B-32.

Had it come out a little sooner, the B-32 would have gained more fame and glory as a show of of American prowess. Even that said, the B-32 provided a backstop that, fortunately, was not as needed because of overall Allied and particularly American success during the strain of war. The B-32 did also lay down the road to another warplane, the B-36, which guarded our world while not having to engage in another war - perhaps because of its capacity.

IMO, the Dominator was waaaaay cooler looking than was the B-29. Anyways, if they had put the resources into the B-32 that the B-29 got, it would have been at least as successful.

The Convair B-32 Dominator USAAF Very Heavy Bomber suffered from the same engine problems as had the Boeing B-29 Superfortress USAAF Very Heavy Bomber. It fell to a bum rap.
The B-32's successor, the colossal Convair B-36 Peacemaker USAAF Super Heavy Bomber indirectly vindicated its predecessor.

Really nice job. I just watched similar on DS channel. I guess you forgot how b32 flew from the Missouri aircraft carrier against Japanese jets. That was entertaining. Keep up the good work.

This was "OK", but as the B-32 flew so few missions, I was Very Curious as to what B-32 Conventional-bombings may have occured [--if any ] from 07/14/1945, until the dropping of the Nagasaki Plutonium weap by "Bock'scar" on the 12th of Aug, '45. Also, were the B-32s based on N. Field, Tinian, or did they fly-off from Saipan? I'll bet it would have "flown-better', if its fusilage was 8 - 15' longer. PS. Post-war Boeing made the "Stratocruiser Airliner", giving the Civilian '29 a 2nd deck. But look how W i d e the fusilage was on the '32. Civilian carburation could have allowed most of the '32s to become civilian Airliners, plus there's that HUGE advantage of carrying 20 tons of passengers/freight, so I WONDER WHY they were all scrapped, when some of them were practically "NEW" aircraft?

It looks more like it should've been a Martin aircraft more than a Consolidated one. The fuselage looks the part of a scaled up B-26 Marauder. Did the production aircraft actually use the forward cowlings from a B-29? They look very similar. (It wouldn't be the only time Consolidated/Convair would use Boeing components as the B-36 used a modified B-47 twin jet pod on each wing and the YB-60 straight up used X/YB-52 engine nacelles as well as it also had eight engines.)

Irritating commentary. Jeez, dude, take a breath now and then. Anyways, considering the fact that 100's of thousands of people, and billions were sunk into the B-29 program, it's no wonder that the B-32 was left out in the cold. If you look at the real stats on the number of lost 29's due to engine failure over the Pacific, you know it wasn't a reliable airplane....it even killed it's own test pilots. The Air Corps gambled big on the B-29, and they weren't going to admit failure, just like they wouldn't admit that daylight bombing over Germany was suicidal, until they had no choice but to change . On top of that , the Dominator looked like a bomber, the B-29... a penis with wings.
