Billy Strings is part of a new generation of flatpickers that are taking bluegrass guitar to the next level. His personal style isn't for everyone, as can be seen in every bluegrass guitar forum argument of the last 6 months. I've previously covered Billy's playing on Dust In A Baggie, While I'm Waiting Here, Tennessee Stud, I'm A Lonesome Fugitive, and Cocaine Blues. In the future I'll get to other hits like Slow Train, I promise (yes, the one in the van). I do find it interesting that in a scene flooded with Tony Rice imitators that the most popular flatpicker right now is Billy Strings, who is very influenced by Doc Watson!
Big thanks to Luke Black for being a monster and transcribing this break and playing it faster than I can on Instagram.

Just discovered your lessons and am blown away. Excellent teaching, playing, and production. I'm newer to blue grass and didn't expect to find so much talent and kindnees on youtube. Thanks very much.
Next billy stings breakdown has got to be running. Such a killer tune.
New to your channel, really enjoying it! Cello player here trying out your licks on my axe!
oh shit i saw luke and his band in atlanta this summer! crazy good!
I was listening to Home on my way to work this very morning, and I thought to myself "Man I wish Marcel would do the break for Everything's The Same". Imagine my surprise when I got to work and there it was! So now I wish Marcel would do the intro to Meet Me at the Creek and Guitar Peace lol
I can't wait to be able to play like this.
I've only played guitar 1 year, and learning bluegrass about 6 months.
Marcel, your videos are great! Keep it up, I'm sure a lot more people will be watching soon. Also, I couldn't help but notice your hitchhikers thumb - you're the only other person I've seen who holds a pick like I do!
Awesome dude!! Thunder next perhaps??
Thanks for the breakdown, awesome work! Would love to see a lesson on Watch it Fall!
As always well explained and thanks for giving attribution to the guy who did it!
ha.. crap.. I just figured this all out and as I'm looking it up to send to a student to suggest we learn... ha.. here it is and I could have saved my self some time! oh well... as always Marcel killing it.
Great lesson.
I’d love to see billy react to your breakdowns and your thoughts on why he plays certain things. I’m willing to bet that he didn’t know the theory behind the notes, licks and runs whilst playing as much as learning what sounds good and where over his years and years of playing? No criticism at all I just imagine his theory probably isn’t the same level as yours.
Man, thank you! Learned this progression today and had fun singing and playing it, improving some, and was sitting here trying to sound this break out... you're a lifesaver. I was getting kinda close...sometimes haha. Much Obliged.
Something for any Bluegrass player to aspire to play. But! Don't expect to play like Billy! Great music is so much more then the notes and scales you are playing! I can speak from years of playing in bands, studying with great teachers and hours years of practicing! Another example Jerry Garicia. Sounds like easy scales to play. That is only a fraction of what he is playing! Any real musicians reading this. Will understand the point I am trying to make! Most important have a great time playing and find your own way!
YEEEEEEES! LOVE THIS BREAK!!!!!
Thanks 🙏🏼
I love this one, thanks!
So you have a tab for his second solo break at the end of the track? Good stuff!
Good morning Marcel.
Nice!
You should be the richest picker on the Internet! You're the best!
thank you!! more billy!
i hope to someday in my lifetime see a transcription of his version of salt creek on fiddle tune x w/ Don J. There are portions of that tune where even slowing it down to 25%, i still can't get down.
These lessons are absolutely unreal! Thank you so much for the free tabs! If you ever transcribed a full Billy Strings album into a book I would buy it instantly haha
Any chance of Billy String - In the Morning Light?
I love the Billy Strings lesson! I'd love to have some tabs to the intro for Josh Williams' Blue Railroad Train
Marcel, guitar is one of the most fun instruments to play! What fuels your passion for it?
great song!
Self Note- 5:50
Is there a TEF of this on the site once you "donate" for the lesson?
Awesome
In measure 17 I seem to be more comfortable with D U U D U U D. What do you think?
Where can I get that shirt?!
Marcel could you recommend some software to get me started transcribing? I can pick songs out by ear and tab them out. I love Billy Strings and Doc, among others and know a ton of their songs. Any advice? You have heard some stuff I've picked out on Instagram, my handle is coffeeandgrass
Definitely seen your name on insta! You should get Guitar Pro, it's what all the cool kids use. Here's my affiliate link with them so if you purchase Guitar Pro through this link it helps out this channel! www.guitar-pro.com/#ae156
A free alternative is PowerTab. Guitar Pro can open PowerTab files too, so if you ever wanted to upgrade you could!
