  • A group of us went to Noma to try the #1 restaurant on San Pellegrino's top 50 restaurants in the world. Having been to the Fat Duck I was really keen to understand why this was voted #1, but didn't have 3 michelin stars. The answer lies within... enjoy!

    If you prefer burger and Kentucky fried chicken its OK, if you primarily eat to stop the hunger, its OK, if amount is more important than taste, its OK, if sitting around a table eating for hours is not your way to spend an evening, its OK, if you just eat what you know, its OK, you probably wouldn't enjoy the food at Noma, in that case just let the people who enjoy it, enjoy it.
    I visited Noma a year before they got their first Michelin Star, it is the best,most enjoyable and surprising dinner I ever had!
    I have eaten in good restaurants around the world, I have had first class food served, I wouldn't be able to tell you what was on the plates, it was all nice and normal, at Noma I was surprised, not just because of the look of the dishes but mainly because of the taste! I am still able to recall every dish which was served, that's the difference.
    I have tried to order a table ever since, but the disadvantage of trying to book a table in what is called the best restaurant of the world is that thousand of people who enjoy food have the same idea.

    Why are people so afraid of trying something new? The people that are criticizing this place seem rather crass and uneducated. A lot of cussing. There is nothing wrong with eating expensive food and certainly nothing wrong with wanting the best humanity has to offer. If you're going to live in a box, at least live in one with windows.

      John Doe In the world of gastronomy, this food is considered the best. Since the people that are defining what is the best, most creative food in the world, are people that are passionate about food, I would assume they are correct. Some hillbilly, could say, "well, I think hotdogs are the best.", when quite clearly, this isn't the case. To him, it very well could be, but on a world class level, absolutely not. We can debate about people's personal perceptions of the best, but that clouds the effort to attain any real definition. I'm addressing the tendency for average people to criticize that in which they can't typically attain. Simply because they don't understand/can't afford what is considered the best, doesn't make it pretentious, or bad. This has been going on for thousands of years between the classes. Poor man's cuisine, which is what some refer to it as, is often looked down upon as slop, by foodies, which is not a fair assessment either. These types of food/cooking interesect a lot these days, so each cuisine needs credit. I'm not in the box at all, I'm simply hoping that people get out of their comfort zone and try new things. It's not productive, nor innate in humans to lack curiosity, so closing oneself off from an entire form of cuisine, isn't a good thing,

      +Justin Hopkins Indeed man. I could eat at this place and it would hurt my wallet. But it would probably be an experience I'd never forget. I get the live ants they serve sometimes. It's not just for show. They contain acid, and we love acidy flavours in our food like vinegar and lemon, so why not ants?

    Am I the only one who would LOVE to eat there? srly 200 euros for this I think its perfect, its 20 dishes you are eating, Im pretty sure its plenty food and its a diferent experience, you are paying for the show, the enjoy of doing something diferent in your boring life. Its perfect.

    I would be excited as hell to get a chance to eat here. I also love a good pizza or burger. Good food is good food. I was brought up with the whole 'expensive restaurants with small portions are pretentious nonsense' thing, but when I was older I started trying some new things and OMG did I not know what I had been missing. A great dining experience is not something to be missed if you can afford it (or have someone to pay for you).

    I'm with Feedz on this one. I love trying new things, especially food, but I draw the line at forest debris and live shrimps.

    Some things like the dried moss may seem silly, but as a whole the menu is quite fascinating. Its nutritional or alimentary value is irrelevant. It was, of course, created as a sensorial and aesthetic experience. I respect and appreciate that. If I ever get a chance, I'll go there.

    I'm amazed to see so much narrow minded hating here. Life is about trying new things, going beyond your idea of "normal" because you never know what wonderful experiences you might be missing. Outside of the raw shrimp, which, admittedly, I found a little disturbing, I found these dishes fascinating and would love to go there! And how can you complain about the price, when you'll pay close to that at a high end steakhouse for something you could easily cook at home for 1/8 of the cost?

    this is restaurant is revolutionary...its expensive cause he took the time to go out into Denmark and forage the goodness it as to offer and he serves it...and that's the thing he is onlie serving vegetation or proteins from Denmark.

    Owner and founder René Redzepi has formerly worked at restaurants such as The French Laundry, elBulli, Kong Hans Kælder and Le Jardin des Sens. The Chef de cuisine is Matt Orlando, who met Redzepi whilst working at The Fat Duck;[15] and sommelier is Norwegian Mads Kleppe.

    This is the kind of menu that could've been composed during some extravagant challenge on a cooking show where they forbid the contestants from using normal ingredients. So you have to resort to serving live shrimp and broth skin.

    exciting! I don't think it's pretentious. In fact, most of the dishes look fun and full of wonder like when a child is trying foods for the first time.

    It looks like you all had a very lovely time eating interesting food in a very hospitable atmosphere. Didn't seem "stuffy" at all. Wait staff seemed to be very nice as well. Love the way you set up the video for viewing. Thanks for sharing.

    I love how some of the people that say this is a waste will gladly shell out money for one night of fun in a club, or a day's trip to Disneyland etc. Different people prefer different experiences and this is more of an experience than it is a meal.

    The joke is on the customers! A great laugh and hearty laugh the owners, chefs and cooks of this "swanky" restaurant must be having. Literally laughing their way to the bank. I bet after each cook has presented their "Piece de Resistance" to the haute clientele, they return to the kitchen and laugh themselves to tears and probably death.

      It's very hard to make money with a high end restaurant, that's why El Bulli closed.
      They make their money with books and other merchandise.

    Eating here would b amazing. I would love to try the reindeer moss. I heard the preparation of this was very delicate and time consuming.

    They do not use Lemon because it does no grow natually in Denmark, they use live ants instead.

    Just watch Anthony Bourdain, Parts Unknown: Noma, i did and now i want to go there, look fantastic imo!
    Im from Scandinavia so this feels so odd yet so close to home since most of the ingredients you can find wild almost all over Scandinavia.

    Thomas they always present food like that. One of their "features" is that the chef who cooks presents the food to you - pretty novel and something that I like!

    I can enjoy a FEW weird, experimental dishes in restaurants. It's a fun experience. But when you're eating a tasting menu I tend to find that the novelty factor wears off after 4-5 weird dishes. You stop being fascinated by the complicated ingredients and just start longing for some more normal, great tasting food

      Normal? They collect all the greens wild outside the town or they go to a farm that they have a deal with where they can take whatever they want.
      It's not only ranked as one of the best resturants in the world it's probably one of the most ecofriendly to.

    It was really interesting to see how it is there. I am a vegetarian so I wouldn't be the best person to go there even if I could afford it, but for someone who isn't and can afford it I am sure it is a great experience.

      Hey you will surprised as Noma is now going very vegetarian. Last time I went a few months ago we had only 2 meat dishes on the entire menu!

    The reason it doesn't have 3 stars is that it's located in Denmark and the Michelin guide is French. The amount of horrible restaurants that have michelin stars in France is astounding.

    I must not be fancy because not a single one of these dishes looked appetizing.
    I don't want my food to look like a tree, I don't want to eat moss or live shrimps.
    I want my steak medium rare and my fries crispy, gravy on the side.
    I guess I don't understand the artistic integrity of creating food that looks like dirt.

      Some people like McDonalds each and every day. Other people likes to enrichen their lives with experiences, even if it comes to such basic stuff as eating a meal. We cant all have an equally single-minded view on things. Good for you that plain steakhouses are of plenty out there. Also they tend to give an "meh"-ok expression when bringing a date, which seems to fit your style just fine. Fuck romance and compassion. (Lol)

    Noma is a choice: Do I want to spend 300 euros on a once in a lifetime dinner filled with crazy stuff I will never ever eat again or not? It's on my bucket list in any case.

    The cow leg dish looked amazing, and a huge portion, especially after all those other dishes. I don't think anyone should complain about price versus amount of food served after all that. Of course, I may be wrong in many cases. :)

    It seems a shocking experience, funny and very innovative, but... in theme of flavor, if you try Massimo Bottura (from Italy) or Ferràn Adrià (from Spain) restaurants, they are another planet.

    Cost for the meal was about 170GBP (~250 USD?) plus wine and drink. I think the total ended up being about 250 GBP (~370 USD?) so yes a but extravagant.

    If that's TOTAL for 4 people...then that's an outstandingly well priced experience. 92 bucks and change... I could blow twice that here locally at a few restaurants on one person and not have this kind of experience.

      You don't just walk in and wait to be seated, you pay to reserves a spot days before you go. I think you pay about €200

      +Jolly Ranchu hi Jolly. When you have so many dishes there is always one you dont like so much. The green sauce you see a lot they used a bit too much in the dishes. But overall as you can see in the video you not only tast but you also talk together it becomes an event. The servants are really knowledgeable and professional ( many are cooks someselves ) in a very relaxing atmosphere. For one of the dishes every person at my desk had a servant coming in with a plate standing behind you. Again just so professional. The restaurant is in an old warehouse maybe its why it doesnt get 3 michilin stars.

      I went to NYC a few weeks ago! We arrived at 12 am and the Halal guys were stationed right next to my hotel. Even at that late hour there was a line. Great food!

    *shrug* different strokes for different folks. Mushrooms (a fungus) were considered too base or dangerous to eat and hence a delicacy not that long ago, fruit similarly both are now everyday foods. Hindu's consider eating cow as sacrilegious, Jews consider shell fish inedible, and a large part of the world won't eat pork, so you shouldn't really judge I guess. It's all perspective.

    I don't understand the angry reactions against this type of thing, such as the one below my comment. I think some people misunderstand the point here. This isn't somewhere that people go every night for a meal. It's about having a unique, memorable experience. Obviously these people enjoy a good steak as well, but that's a more straight-forward experience that is enjoyed for different reasons. It's like the difference between going to the opera and turning the radio up loud while driving around in your car. And hey, it may not be for you. Nothing wrong with that. But why can't you just leave it at that?

    I can't believe no one mentioned how cunty it is to dip a live shrimp in butter and eat it. It can't be tastier or more filling than a cooked shrimp, it is just more cruel.

      ypkymtf Okay I have to admit I was drunk when i wrote that comment. I do apologize for the filthy language. But I must say that I don't understand what it is you find so cruel about eating a live shrimp? Why is it more cruel to eat it alive than cooking it? It dies instantly either way.
      And about the taste.. If you haven't tried it already I really think you should. It's really delicious!

      It's okay. My problem with the shrimp is not that they are eating it while it's alive; as you've said, it dies instantly either way. The dragging through butter part seems bad to me since the animal can understand it is in danger. I don't know, it just seems that there could be a better way than prolonging it. Anyway, cheers for the decent response though =)

    I don't want to come off ignorant, but I don't know how I'd feel paying so much for dishes that doesn't seem "cooked" I understand that plating and presentation is an art form but when you're cooking an egg and sprinkle in garden greens. I can do that at home albeit it doesn't look as nice. I dono just my 2 cents.
