A little tip: when you fit the safety plates over the lock and behind, stuff a rag tightly around it as when they try to drill to the mechanism, the rag will rap around their drill bit making it extremely difficult. Cheap and easy. I’ve seen a few of these going around with a small drill hole in the back, if a piece of rag was stuffed in there it would make the whole process a ball ache.

I’ve got a hooked deadlock on the side door and the back, and locking mechanism protection on both. I did it myself and bought the parts from this company. It was a bit fiddly but it came with instructions so not too bad a task if you’re quite practical. I certainly feel a lot safer knowing I have these bits on.

Again, I don’t understand why more people aren’t installing simple kill switches for their starters and the fuel pumps, if you do that that vehicle has to be towed away.
These are cheap simple circuits and you put them in with however secret way you want to activate them, And that vehicle will never start yes it may get broken into but it will not be driven off

I live in a very quiet town in the cotswolds, crime and type is very rare. Last month we had five vans broken into in one night mine included, all but one were Transits. All the owners were self employed and couldn’t make a living without the tools that were stolen. Can’t emphasise how important van security is for guys like us. I was one of those broken into and it costs me on replacement tools only £2.5k, let alone loss of earnings.

Don’t leave your tools in your van at night. Nothing you can do in the day time whilst st work. Other than take everything inside the job. But not always possible. But if you leave your tools in a van at night, your lazy and it will cost you. If you live in a flat, that is not practical for a tradesman. Say what you want but it’s right. You need a room in the house for your tools or a garage. Reverse the car or can up to the door.

Makes you wonder when a new decent van is not small change why the manufacturer doesn’t fit some of this stuff as standard. Surely a van that’s tough to break into or steal would be a good seller. How about changing the law so that if you steel a mans tools/living it’s 5 yrs in nick, if it’s aggravated theft minimum 10yrs.

This advice is for Dan and all tradesmen. I am retired now, but not so long ago like many others my van was badly damaged and I lost all my Makita power tools.
After weeks of trying to find an insurance company with a van plan, I gave up. The nearest I got was Public and Private Liability insurance, but beware that is a bureaucratic nightmare. Final it occured to me that I would have to create my own Insurance Bond. I phoned my bank and instructed them to transfer £40 a month into my own Bond. Fortunately I never had to use it. When I retired I closed the DD and put £6,000 toward my pension. Furthermore, it may help if you tried to do a deal with your bank. If you set up a DD long term, they may, if you ask, cover you for tool theft by granting a low interest loan until your bond matches their loan? Regards to you all.
