  • Make your judgement with a thumb up or down.. It's horrendous.
I've tried to highlight the "leaked" soundtrack with bits of footage I feel draw from previous Trek signatures. Some of my own VFX thrown in.
It does sound very ST: Online with it's blatant mashup of other trek themes, almost like a parody to avoid paying copyright royalties. I've highlighted some with visuals, especially the Voyager section which is especially blatant, but given that the only VFX for DSC we've seen so far are in the video game ballpark, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the case :-/ Filming begins in 48 hours, so as each episode is complied the soundtrack will be recorded, and incorporated into the post edit. The main theme will be on paper by now. While this does sound very synth, you can clearly hear the brass screw up a few notes here and there, so it's an authentic, studio-mastered recording with a real orchestra. General consensus is that the video games rarely tend to use an orchestral recording. So, chances are that this is either a rejected theme, or the actual theme. IMHO it's too safe, and a mish-mash of other signature trek tunes to the point of a beautiful orchestra sounding like a comic-con presentation.
It's obviously hugely inspired by Jerry Goldsmith, RIP, it could be dropped in to "Air Force One" with zero effort, but it's not him. IMHO the pacing is all over the place, it's trying too hard to bridge between what came before and what's coming next. The trouble is that this is a prequel, so we already know what's coming next.
As a video game this would be up in the top five for production values, even if it's a tad schizophrenic, but as a signature theme tune of a the biggest budget trek series to date, I'm not convinced, even remotely, that it's of it's own. Not that anyone listening and reading this could do any better. It's just not quite original and could apply to any fan production hoping not to get a lawsuit with their latest upload.
Hopefully it's a grower, I've listened 50, maybe 100 times putting this montage together, and I like it a lot, it was a pleasure compiling, but I also like the Jurassic Park signature theme, hearing it for the first time didn't strike me as Trek, more like an American Parade, a Police Academy montage, or the end of some war movie. It's Starship troopers, Galaxy Quest.. I don't know what mileage it would get bringing in new folks to the universe. hmph. I'm also reminded quite a bit of Blanck Mass's colab with the London symphony in the 2012 Olympic games • Blanck Mass & London S...
Well, we've been here before.. yet another prequel, a theme tune trying to fit the vision of the show, rather than the history of the franchise. Funny thing is though, this would have fitted the cancelled "Enterprise" much more snugly than Russel Watson.
    That ending needs fixing too.

EDIT It's grown on me. Pipe up the counterpoint, ditch the snare drums.

Another thing that needs to be included is the Original Series fanfare composed by Alexander Courage, because it isn't "Star Trek" without that fanfare.

i know. It's the snare and orchestral hits throwing it in to a parody genre. It's bashing us upside our heads to separate each bar. TNG did the same, but at the time it meant something different. Keep the DNA, but bring it back a little from a militaristic marching band.
I'd really like to hear it slowed a little, some more instrumental definition, and deciding on a basic riff of 5-10 notes to carry it as a signature of it's own we can all get on board with, no pun intended.

Listening back to 'Final Frontier,' I quite liked this piece no idea why it was composed. But but it has that grandeur space exploration feel to it. But what they ended up with theme wise for Discovery, much like the rest of it was terrible!
Shame because Russo did a good job with the sound track on Altered Carbon. Don't know how he fucked up so badly with STD.

Well... It souns kinda Star Trek, but for my taste the theme is a bit
too fast. Along with the speed, it sound, like they are trying to
incorporate too much into this theme... a bit of the movies, a bit DS9,
and a bit Voyager. If the whole theme was slowed down, it wouldn`t be as
obvious, but still sound like Star Trek. I really, really wish for a
comeback for Star Trek (since the Kelvin-timeline isn`t "my thing"... I
couldn't get used to the first, hated the 2nd, and didn't care for the
3rd movie, even after seeing it), but the announcements so far (along
with the Axanar-incident), and this theme unfortunally doesn`t look as
promising, as I wish it to be...

Sounds a lot like Dynasty in Space or "North and South in the future"... (the civil war Series with patrick Swayze) maybe even a bit Falcon Crest thrown into the mix... so it's old Timey, rural with a touch of scifi epic grandiosity... but not very dramatic or action filled and not really all that spacey. More like "human interaction drama"...
So they seriously claimed this would be the intro? Well it IS better than the actual theme... but not really good either.

Every composer of a Star Trek theme from Alexander Courage's for the Original Series, has tried to make it's own statement. TNG used the the Original Series movie theme. DS9, and, Voyager had themes that tried to convey what the show was about. Enterprise used that song from Patch McAdam. This feels like a continuation from Voyager's theme. The show is supposedly a bridge from Enterprise to the Original Series (from what I've read.) I'm giving this theme, and, the show a chance.

needs a bit of tweeting as it seems there are only about 5 instruments playing, making it feel weak. However, this could just be a pre production version and the final edit could be a lot grander and more Startrek. However.... Please don't judge the rest of the show by the theme tune..... Just because the theme tune might be a bit weak, doesn't mean the show itself will be.

  • @algernonilfracombe

I still have to say, I think this is excellent. Maybe not quite as good as the awesome TNG or Voyager themes, but still remarkable nevertheless. For me, it manages to combine the sort of martial bass and march of the TNG theme and the rolling currents of TOS and Voyager in a way that nicely tips the proverbial hat to Trek's heritage whilst not becoming a mockery of it. Admittedly the execution is still (more than!) a little off, and it does feel somewhat like a medley in the musical segues, but I feel this is still quite a lot better in feel and flavour than what some of us may have been worrying about.
(Although I wish it didn't sound like it was recorded on a holodeck- Vic Fontaine would have been turning in his grave.)

I can't really make a decision on this theme until I see it alongside the opening sequence.
The fact of the matter is that you mashing ST scenes together from previous series doesn't jive with a theme made for something brand new. So until we ALL see the opening sequence, we're judging a book by it's cover

The uploader's profile was blank (and deleted last I checked) but I remained super curious who the creator was and if they had anymore Voyager sequences. This seems to be on par with Dennis McCarthy's horrible score for Star Trek: Generations. Fun Fact: I was in band in Middle School and High School in the late 80's/early 90's, and many of the concert band pieces we played were arrangements by none other than McCarthy. I'm wondering if this composer had a similar background? Because that's exactly what this sounds like: My old high school concert band playing a nondescript, uninspiring work written by a college student who might actually be very talented but whipped something up in a hurry just to get a grade in music composition class. There are some nice moments, but overall it's just bland.

This is a Charles Henri piece, that's confirmed.
As far as the rest of it goes, we agree with you. It's a hodgepodge collection of recognizable signature Jerry Goldsmith phrases all sort of glued together into a sort of musical hash. It doesn't seem to know what it is when it starts, it doesn't seem to know where it's going, and when it gets there, it doesn't know where it's been.
It would be a great music student's tool for constructing heroic themes, because it hits every cliche on the nose, and they fit together so poorly that even a beginning student can see where each little musical meme starts and stops. This sounds like it was assembled by computer, using a random number generator.

I think the sound track sounds dated and not in a good way, more like a late 90's early 2000's cheesy kind of way. Those marching drums sound like they were made on a toy keyboard. Don't get me wrong the score is quite nice but the production, it's amateur. Why can't we just have the music from Star Trek First contact. That's probably the most emotional piece of music ever written throughout the whole Franchise and would fit nicely in like with Voyager and DS:9's musical format which is of course perfect.

  • @josephhandford6138
    @josephhandford6138 7 років тому

The score sounds too amateurish to be a leaked soundtrack All the other themes have an uplifting edge, quality and direction about them, whereas this doesn't seem to know what journey it's on. I have had a few ideas myself and although I believe I could do better I still think that even as a musician I am limited in writing a score for a Star Trek series. I liked the First Contact music and thought that that should have been used for Enterprise, much in the same way that TMP music was used later on for TNG, especially as Enterprise was harking back to the period which followed on from that film. Even Jerry Goldsmith's masterpiece from TMP 'Ilia's Theme' should have had more use made out of it as a tribute to Persis Khambatta or something inspired by that piece of music. Bearing in mind we're now in year 51 from Star Trek's birth and the length of time there have been no new series since Enterprise Discovery, needs a fitting theme to give it any ounce of credibility and to be taken seriously. Also, should there be a hint of the Klingon theme thrown in if they are to be a key feature of the series?

    • @bluebull399
      @bluebull399 7 років тому

If you think you can do a better job why don't you write a score and send it in. I'm not trying to be patronising I'm being serious, if it's better they may even use it. In my opinion the best Star Trek music (by absolutely miles) is the intro to first contact, that horn and strings, amazing and would so fit an opening scene of the ship flying through space.

This is not star trek at all, I have to say this is even worse than the Enterprise theme. Which was alright, mainly because the vocals conveyed the message of Star Trek. But this? Do I hear Star Trek? No. I don't. I hear the theme to a cheap sci-fi film. Hell I'd have John Williams compose the discovery theme at this point. It'd be way better, even if it was a cardinal sin to get the dude who composed Star Wars.
