I don't agree with Maresca when he was quoted as saying it's a Premier League problem in regards to selling their acedmy players. Chelsea are compelled to sell off their academy players because they must sell them in order to balance books due to the incredible spending the team has done. If they weren't spending so much they wouldn't need to sell their academy players.

The thing Chelsea’s owners are missing when it comes to flipping young players is they have to actually put them in a situation where they can showcase their skills on winning teams. City can flip Alvarez for what they’re getting because he’s shown enough on City and internationally for other clubs to feel he’s worth almost $100mil. Buying young players that never get to showcase their skills on a winning Chelsea team isn’t going to raise their value.

Borson is right and is backed by facts. MacAnthony is relying on what the agents tell him (oh dear). And for the Chelsea coach to say all EPL clubs are having to sell their Academy players to comply with PSR is just not true - other clubs choose not to overspend beyond their means and some, like Brentford, don't even have an Academy.

  • @davidevans6755
    @davidevans6755 Місяць тому +3

None of it is 'compulsory', the issue is fans want new players and managers ego's generally mean they want to bring in players to 'fit' their system. If they believe those players are better than the academy players then that's an academy issue but most of the time it's because they want to put their own stamp on the team and it generates excitement.

Whether that's a percentage every year, step changes every second year, or pay rises if performance criteria are met. Many players have them in thier contracts.
And, for promising young players who are expecting to improve. It's almost impossible to think they wouldn't have that with very long contracts. An 8 year contract you also need to think where pay in the industry is going and inflation.
Especially when many of these players had other big clubs with serious offers.

honestly the best thing they can do is take the hit for 2/3 years only spending money if they absolutely have to and see how the young players develop. Chelsea fans may not like it especially if they’re bottom half but as long as they avoid relegation they’ll end up being in a better place. If some of the prospects reach the heights they can then all they’ll need is 2/3 players in 4/5 years time to have a top team and if they don’t spend between now and then they’ll have a lot to spend when it comes around

Borson's speaking nonsense. It's well known how the Chelsea Contracts work.
Players get a small base salary (small by Prem standards) of like £50-90k a week.
Everything else is performance based, whether it be the number of goals, assists, points, trophies, match ratings, league placement, cup run etc.
The Players agent then no doubt negotiates the particular metrics and formula most relevant to that particular player.
This is a system appealing to both the players and owners. If you play like a superstar, you get paid like a superstar, regardless of your seniority, transfer fee, profile etc all without the need for contract renegotiations which no one wants. Similarly if you play bang average, you get paid bang average which is great for the ownership & club.
This explains the willingness to sign these long contracts. renegotiations are unnecessary. No Player goes to Chelsea believing they're going to be average so the performance bonuses are enticing and in the worst case scenario atleast you get 5-8 years of a decent pay check guaranteed, especially important when an injury can end your career in an instant. And there's no downside for the Club, if a player flops they're not costing the club too much, if they succeed then you've got a star player for the best part of a decade.
And so Enzo is almost certainly earning less than £200k, hell I'd be surprised if he was earning £150k a week.
Meanwhile, Cole Palmer likely earned far more last season than he would anywhere else. Had he stayed at City he'd be stuck on a fairly average deal desperately trying to renegotiate or force a transfer after a breakout season.
And you just know Boehly was beaming ear to ear when signing Palmers checks as he knows its earned, unlike other owners who're grimacing paying similar wages to over the hill flops.
It's a good system. I'm not for reducing players wages at all, as far as I'm concerned there's no premier league without these guys and so they deserve the majority of the spoils.
But I do think the way wages are distrusted needs improvement and Chelsea's system is fairer, more motivating and offers the average player better security.

Chelsea will never get their money back on most players they have overpaid for. They will have to take a massive write-off at some point. To flip players successfully, you have to know what you are doing. Buy low, sell high, like Brighton. Clearlake seems clueless. Chelsea won't be able to pay top players less than the market rate for very long. If they develop, they won't be happy and will have little loyalty to the club. The ones that will stay will be the ones you want rid of. Top players have options. Clearlake manages money, it isn't their money. Funds make bad investments all the time, they take a portfolio approach. Clearlake is managing $72 billion and Chelsea is not a major investment for them.

There aren't enough loan slots to loan them out and then they don't play in the 1st team because they spent to much money on certain players so they want them to play even if it doesn't work in the squad. You say "" barley better"" 7 out of the 9 acadmy players they have sold have played /will be playing in Europa/ champions league over the past 2 seasons when we haven't been good enough to make that level. He doesn't have a point. Enzo and Chelsea are just passing blame and not taking accountability for excessive amount money spent. But it is a problem that clubs just buy and sell academy players amongst themselves to have a healthier economy and run circles around the rules. Newcastle, Villa, and Everton are equally to blame for this. All clubs that have spent far beyond their capabilities.
At least LFC and Utd are still run like football clubs and use their academy as intended, rather than bargaining chips.
