- In today's tie-dye experiment we fold a shirt into a triangle and dye it's edges. Can you predict what the result will be?

𝟏) 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Start with a clean 100% cotton blank white shirt.
Soak the shirt in water then wring it out. Leave it slightly damp.
𝟐) 𝐌𝐢𝐱 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐲𝐞𝐬
Using 8oz (230ml) bottles
Measure and add your dye powder first.
Add 1 teaspoon of soda ash to the bottle.
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.
Don't mix too much at one time - the solution only stays good for a few hours.
𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 - 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲
Pastel - 1/20 tsp (0,1g)
Soft - 1/8 tsp (1g)
Medium - 1/2 tsp (4g)
Strong - 1 tsp (8g)
Powerful - 2 tsp (16g)
𝟑) 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Choose your favorite technique and follow the folding process.
Pleat, crumple, and fold your way to success.
When you're done, bind the shirt using rubber bands or string to secure it in place.
𝟒) 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Using your dye bottle, apply the dye gently over the shirt. Use your favorite technique or let loose your creativity, there's no wrong way to do it!
𝟓) 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐲𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭
Leave the shirt in a warm room. The dye reacts better at a temperature of 70°F (20°C) or more.
Let the dye react for 8 hours or overnight.
𝟔) 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Rinse your shirt in the sink under cold running water. Open up the shirt while rinsing. Continue rinsing and washing by hand until the shirt stops bleeding.
Soak the shirt in warm water to remove any remaining dye.
𝟕) 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Machine wash the shirt by itself or with other tie-dye shirts for the first wash.
Cold wash with a small amount of detergent.
After the first time, you can wash your tie-dye shirt with other pieces of clothing.

@@Mary_OTT A frozen dessert, shaved ice with flavored sugar syrups on top. The blue color reminds me of blue raspberry or bubblegum flavor and red reminds me of cherry flavor.
4:23 The fold and colors remind me of that triangular color pen.
This video give me flashback when i was in highschool and my teacher told us to do this tie dye, but with tissue paper!

@@jibran738 I am a professional tie-dyer as well. Most get their dyes from Dharma Trading company. They are a special dye formulation. They are known as "procion fiber reactive dyes." You also need to purchase "soda ash" in order for it to "fix" to the material. Any 100% cotton will work, but quality is important for long life if you're going to sell them. Dharma has awesome tutorials on the basics to get started. Watching folks like Chandye can give you great inspiration on projects you'd like to try. 😀

I didn't expect this result either! With tie-dye it's all about trying new things and it's a big surprise every time you open up a shirt!
@@Chandye I have a question. If I don’t want any white in the shirt how do I go about doing so? Also, when I do a spiral mine comes out great the only problem is in the spiral almost every time there is some white in it. But nowhere else in the shirt, everything else gets dyed through but the middle. It doesn’t look bad at all. I just want it to be no white. Thanks in advance.
@@nichole8622 I would suggest putting more dye on the shirt until the fabric is saturated. Make sure to dye both sides of the shirt to dye every last bit of it.
@@Chandye Oh yea I do both sides. It just seems maybe my middle of designs are so tight it just has trouble going all the way through the middle. I am about to do another shirt and I will just saturate the middle more than usual and I’ll see how that works. Thanks so much for replying. Also I use tweezers to pinch the fabric so could that be the issues Bc it’s just too tight?
@@nichole8622 You can usually get the dye through tight fabric by applying it multiple times in the same spot and waiting a few seconds between each application.
Interesting. I can't do a white background shirt. I have extremely hard water which causes the backstaining no matter how hard I try to prevent it. 😔 Glad to see folks who can pull it off.

Hi could please let me know which colors you are using for tie and dye and are these color permanent dont fade out??
We use fiber-reactive dyes. They are permanent and you can buy them online and in craft stores.

You should do one with a similar fold but with red, yellow, and blue instead of red, blue, and grey.. And also fill it in so the colors blend together and make purple green and orange 🥺

Yes! She's right! I mean of course these patterns work for everything and I am using them for all of my projects for me and my two little boys, but you're so artistic and creative and I would love to see what you could come up with even just using some feminine color palettes in a project or two? Really not sure if there could be such a thing as girl versus boy tie-dye techniques, but maybe it's just because of the colors that we're used to seeing with your projects? I would kill to see one of your crazy in depth techniques with like pinks and oranges
That's some very good insight. We do tend to use the same colors too much. We will definitely add some variety in the future. Thank you for pointing this out.
