- JOAN JETT "Make Believe" 1980
Joan Jett’s first post RUNAWAYS LP, Originally titled “JOAN JETT” was initially released on the German Label Ariola, and in the US on Blackheart Records in 1980. In 1981 the album was retitled “BAD REPUTATION” and released on Boardwalk Records.
Recording for this LP began in March of 1979 at Chappell Studios in England. Former Sex Pistols, Steve Jones and Paul Cook produced the sessions. Of the three songs that were recorded, “You Don’t Own Me” and “Don’t Abuse Me” were included on the album. An early version of “I Love Rock and Roll” was also recorded and appeared as the B-side of the “You Don’t Own Me” single released in Holland in 1979. “I Love Rock and Roll” would later be re-recorded with Jett’s band THE BLACKHEARTS in June of 1981, and would spend eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Charts!
The next sessions were recorded at Fidelity Recorders in Studio City, CA in August of 1979, this is the same studio where Jett had recorded the first RUNAWAYS Album. Seven songs were recorded and produced by Kenny Laguna and Ritchie Cordell. Of the seven songs, only “You Don’t Know what You’ve Got” made it on to the LP. “What Can I Do for You” was also recorded, these tracks were to have been used in The Runaways Movie “Were Alll Crazy Now” which never finished Production (all seven songs later appeared on the Joan Jett Compilation CD “1979”).
Later that year, in December of 1979 Jett, Laguna and Cordell were recording again at The Who’s Ramport Studios in England. Seven more songs were cut ranging from Gary Glitter’s “Doing Alright with the Boys” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me”, “Sam the Sham” and The Pharaoh’s “Wooly Bully” to the Jett/Laguna original “Jezebel”, all of which made the LP, as well as Tommy James and the Shondells “Hanky Panky”, which was only on European pressings of the LP, and The Who’s “Call me Lightning” which was the non-LP B-side of the Single “Make Believe”. Some additional recoding was also done on “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got” from Fidelity’s August 1979 session.
In January 1980, recording continued with the Jett/Laguna/Cordell original “Let Me Go”, Wind’s “Make Believe” and “Too Bad on Your Birthday”. The Lp was completed in March of 1980 with the recording of the Laguna/Cordell/Jett Composition “Bad Reputation”, which would eventually become the title for the LP.

I’m in tears. This song about spiritual love always gets to me.
I love 💕 mixing bible with music.
I always love the way she did this song, it’s underrated
Joan started out as a natural beauty and talent to boot with a little copycat persona she molded very well into her own image and what a image it still is today,Im glad to say im here biggest fan,But everybody else is to,But i got one up,She let me run my hands through her 80's shag at a local venue before she cut it off,The stickey hair spray didn't wash off right away but that was 👌
Me n my wife (RIP)like this one very muchhhhh...i cry oh my....you drive me insane....
One of my favorites from my beautiful dream girl.
I'm so happy!!! Because next month I'll be going to my first ever Joan Jett concert!!!!
So awesome that this exists!!!! Can’t imagine if I had seen this as a kid when I played the “Bad Reputation” & “I Love Rock ‘N Roll records all day long!🖤🖤🖤🖤
This song was originally done by a band called wind in 1969. That was led by tony orlando how much cooking from
This is my favorite song Joan has done .
Love this woman!
I love Joan
I forgot about this one, thanks for posting !
Always liked Joan's cover of this Bo Gentry/Joey Levine tune. Back in 1969 studio singer Tony Orlando cut this song under the group named Wind. Of course Orlando would go on to make many hit songs.
i love this version of this song!
I do love you #joanjett
Beautiful song.
Love this woman so much ❤❤❤
Why she had the voice so acute in that time??? I like it more than the actual!!
I love this song.
She's gifted with a beautiful voice. This is the voice Simon Scowl and Randy Jackson are looking for.
I'd love to wake up next to this woman every morning...so beautiful!!!
I think that's everyone's dream
For the one thumbs down, please identify yourself and prepare for our retribution
One of those rare instances where the cover is much better than the original. Few people know this was originally recorded in 1969 by a one-hit wonder bubblegum band called ‘Wind’, which featured Tony Orlando, before Dawn. Joan has always been pretty smart with her choices of covers, as to not pick songs that are obvious (‘I Love Rock and Roll’ is also a very obscure cover, but how many people know that?). She definitely does this one way more justice than old Mr. “Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the old oak tree” did, even if he did it first. One of my favorites from Joan’s first solo album.
Kenny Laguna also picked a lot of the songs Joan ended up recording. They are inseparable.
In the real world, Wind never existed. It was a studio band put together by the producer to record a few songs. When "Make Believe" became a hit, they hired the same guy they had hired to sing those first songs to record an entire album. Every single musician used was a studio musician. I have that album and Tony Orlando's name does not appear anywhere on it. Joan had nothing to do with choosing this song. It was her producer who was the same producer who produced Wind who chose it for her to record. I have everything Joan Jett ever released, and I've always liked her and her music. The fact that she has had such a great career speaks to her talent and the music professionals who surrounded her from the first Runaways album to today. I bought her "Bad Reputation" album the very first time I saw it in a record store because I already had every Runaways album.
Buffalo this June 💘 some 17000 seater but I don't care. We'll feel the vibe gonna be electric awesome spellbinding.
Love 💞
Cool. I never saw this video before and I thought I saw all of her views. Long ago I even purchased the 2-disc set that Joan and her manager, Kenny, VJ'ed and this wasn't on there. It started with the video of her singing 'Bad Reputation' as part of "Urg! A Music War!" documentary.
we need an original sound
🌹🌹🌹😍😍😍😍💚
I probably think I wrote this one too.
Why is the whole thing a close up of her face?
Because it's a fuckin' GORGEOUS face.
Because... IF YOU NOTICE...
Joan always knew ... that PEOPLE "WANT" TO SEE HER FACE WHEN DOING VIDEOS. And that's STILL TRUE to this day. She is IRREPLACEABLE.
@@cowboykelly6590 I've see her videos. They're not all closeups of her face 🤔
I wish I woulda known she was such a good songwriter when I was a teen and pissed at my controlling parents lol
She didn’t write this one. It’s a cover of some obscure late 60’s bubblegum tune.
Most of her songs are covers
@@tomt6142 - It's a misconception that most of her songs are covers, and the misconception stems from the fact that the covers are the most well-known, but in actuality, the vast majority of her songs are originals (and there are plenty of them).
There was a group that recorded this song back in the '50s but I can't find it.
Group = Wind --- in the 60s

lyrics ?
Go to We Five and hear a real female singer.
The original is much better. She’s just yelling and the music is too loud.
