  • In another exclusive episode, Iain welcomes the single owner and buyer of a complete one-off, a factory-original Aston Martin Lagonda Vantage! A car so rare that many Aston Martin experts, Iain included, could be forgiven for not knowing it even existed, until now! Exclusively commissioned to add that special Aston Martin V8 performance to the stylish Lagonda looks, Iain and the owner chat about how the car came into being and the many details that make this special car so unique, and maybe even worthy of being a Bond car!
The car is in immaculate condition, belying its 35 years of existence, but it is due an engine tune-up. Never one to shy away, Iain grabs his trusty hosepipe and screwdriver and sets to work, before taking the car for a road test to experience that raw V8 Vantage performance.

Personally, although I agree the colour is perfect for this car, I actually DON'T like such wheels, either on this car, or cars generally. I know he probably had low profile tyres to make sure they weren't too squash round corners, but for me LOOKS are the thing. I would rather drive a bit more slowly, on wheels with more attractive thicker tyres, that don't look " penny pinching" on the rubber! I also don't like the spiked wheels, which have spindly looking spokes.I'd rathet have more "abundant" conventional wires, myself, that have less gaps between them! But that's what "Mr. H. " wants, anyway!

It is only by watching Iain in action that one can truly understand what ‘tuning’ really means. Having been brought up in and around pipe organs, watching Iain balancing carbs is just like voicing and tuning an organ. No computer can match the expert ear of the musician! I’m sure the tea-less colonials would attempt the same task with computers, mics and oscilloscopes, but they cannot match the precision of Iain armed with a screwdriver and a bit of hosepipe.

I wonder how much extra power and torque would come from 4 Dellorto 40mm DLRAs with the update kit. The update kit provides a greater flow through a larger venturi and better fuel mixing from the spray bar arrangement and not to mention that the Dells had a better progression circuit for part throttle operation. It was no coincidence that the Lotus adopted the Dells in preference to the Webers that are by comparison a switch - either on or off. Its good to see the Webers having been well tuned.

Amazing example of an exceptional car.
In Australia in 1984 my children's charity raffled off a new silver Aston Martin Lagonda supplied by Bob Jane Aston Martin. It was the most expensive car available in Australia at the time. $235,000. We received a $40,000 discount from Bob Jane.
4,000 tickets for sale @$100 each. One luxury car dealer bought 13 tickets in the series with 13 in the ticket number. Like 1013, 2012, 3013, 1307, 1313. A doctor's wife bought 30 tickets for her Aston Martin enthusiast hubby...
The winning ticket was a Melbourne newsagent with 1311 - one ticket.
Sold the car to a Western Australian and paid off the mortgage on his news agency.
It was amazing to drive - even in the streets of Sydney.

I worked at Newport Pagnell from 1985 and it was at the time of development of the Virage. As Project Manager in the prototype division I had the pleasure of driving a 2 door Lagonda which was being used for development for the Virage. I also recall an American lady choosing the paint colour from an aubergine that she brought with her. And I recall seeing the finished Lagonda resplendent in its dark aubergine colour with matching leather trim and her initials on the lambswool carpets and umbrella and Crystal flutes. I believe it was the last one built. These were in Victor Gauntlet days. I could go on and on........

I went to AML factory in Newport Pagnell in 1985 during my MoD apprentice days and the craftmanship was amazing. Panels hand built from sheet and fitted with precision was just one thing that stuck with me. Years later looking around the Aston stand at Goodwood was so depressing seeing the poor shut lines and low build quality. Such a shame.

As a car valet now in Scotland I really appreciate the finish on the car and the beautiful interior, to keep in that condition is a testament to mr H. If you are ever flying into Campbeltown Mr H pop in for a coffee!

The road at 19:10 looks awfully familiar - I travel to and from work in Sandycroft daily on it! What a mesmerising and lovely car. So ahead of it’s time both stylistically and the tech was insane. Mr H is fascinating and as a petrol head all the documentation and history with the vehicle is utterly appealing (and priceless too!) I actually really like the BBS alloys on it - they suit the styling and actually give the whole thing a much better stance too… the cornering will without doubt be much better. Fascinating look at this wonderfully machine! Thank you

I have a 'top ten' of cars, the Aston Martin Lagonda, sits at number one. Every time I see one, usually at a show, I have to take wwaaayyy too many photographs of it. They're an incredible car, for many reasons. Absolutely amazing, beautiful things, woefully complex, a bit fragile and incredible to look at. The designer, William Towns, was a forward looking genius.

I remember the Aston Martin Lagonda from the early/mid 80's. It was 2-3 in Norway (Oslo) and I often saw one in the neighborhood where I lived. The car was very special to say the least, but it had an appearance that was second to none at the time. Nothing else looked so futuristic and made modern - except for the Lamborghini Countach and maybe the Citroën SM and BX. Compared to other similar cars at the time such as the Mercedes-Benz W116/W126 and Jaguar XJ, the Lagonda was like from another galaxy far away. I went in a different direction and bought a Porsche 928S with leather interior throughout (seats, dashboard, headlining etc.) instead. The overall concept from the Lagonda is not entirely different, even though the Porsche only has two doors. The actual driveline with a large V8 engine in front (though 4,7 liter and fuel injection in the 928S) and a torque converter automatic transmission is quite identical. Incidentally, these gearboxes were hillarious with a first gear going to 118 Km/h, the second gear going to 187 km/h and the third gear going to 260 Km/h in the 928S. I remember that in the Kassel slopes in Germany on the Autobahn I was caught between the gears at a speed of aprox 200 km/h and was heavily run over by a then brand new Mercedes-Benz W201 190E 2.3-16 with some 100 less horsepower. I should probably have bought the 928S with a manual gearbox and got a much better car, but this was not known at the time due to lack of information (Internet, UA-cam etc.). However, locally in Norway with a then legal maximum speed of 90 Km/h, the 928S really had supercar performance (e.g 60-100 Km/h) with a first gear that went to almost 120 Km/h :)

As for the "how many houses" question - we bought a 5-bed detached house that year in SE London for £72k...
This car is now in my "dream Aston" collection! It almost inspires me to think of finding an older Lagonda (in rough confition, naturally!) and doing a restomod: - with a 6 litre V12, 8-speed auto trans' & modern running gear! I'd probably try to include modern instrumentation too as Mr H's example is one of the minority not to have any issues at all in that department! What an absolute peach!!!

You'd be mad to try and fit any sort of V12 into that engine bay. The Aston V8 has a LOT left in it in stock form (even Vantage form). A nice set of modern cams & valves, good port fuel injection and you'd easily find more than enough power to make most people happy.

That's one classy car guy there - not flashy, not putting on a show, just enthusiastically sharing his passion with others of like mind.
But the John Lewis bag is what makes this guy a legend for me! Undoubtedly he could afford something exotic that most of us couldn't dream of buying, but all he needs is a functional bag, so that's exactly what he has. I just love that.
Love the wheels too by the way - transforms the look of the car as well as the handling, by far the most attractive Lagonda I've seen.

Apologies for being a bit late to the party. Just found this video! I've always been curious about these cars. I think I've seen maybe one on the road here in the U.S.
Great upgrade on the wheels! Looks exactly right for the car, and done for exactly the right reasons.
As for how the transmission was described, I'll bet it has a GM TH400 with a B&M shift kit, modified valve body, etc., and a "switch-pitch" torque converter from a late 60s Cadillac. That combination was popular back in the day. That torque converter essentially made it a 6-speed transmission.
Anyway, great video, great car, and much respect to all who have been involved with it.

Incredible that the original owner still has it and has maintained it like new. From an era when quality of this level took craftsmanship and not just computer design and engineering. Perfectly fitting that the only way to tune it properly is have a gentleman with a lifetime of experience equipped with a rubber hose instead of a laptop doing the work.
