Any sled older than about 15 years should have the fuel line in the tank replaced! Folks always think its the fuel pump but nope its the rotted line in the tank.
Very interesting video I enjoyedbut don't feel bad about the kill switch. I just got my sled out of the shop. Twin carbs $100 each to clean new fuel lines. Our first snowfall I says I gotta see if this thing is gonna run good. I'm cranking it and cranking it and cranking it. It wouldn't fire. Yep, the kill switch was off.
I did that same thing last fall 95 puma 340 paid $200 new lines rebuilt pump new pickup in tank cleaned carb she ran all last winter best sled I’ve ever had kids love it
This one starts and runs reliably, but it breaks up under power. I have a new set of plugs and caps for it as well as a fresh tank of fuel lined up. We'll see how she goes!
@@OutsideMedia1 I replaced it all from the in tank screen all the way to carbs new lines rebuilt pump and cleaned carbs I just blew in the tank to get gas up to carbs last week 2 pills she fired right up sitting all last year with no fuel in it
@@OutsideMedia1 start from the tank inlet and work your way to the carbs with new suction filter they are know to fall off in the tank from the hose getting crusty also check your jets I clean them with a piece/strand of automotive wire or torch tip cleaner works best
I’ll be sure to check the skid before I really go out and hit it. Also the primer doesn’t need to be there after I replaced the pickup line, but I left it there simply because I ran out of fuel line and needed to finish the video! Thanks for watching
I have basically the same sled 1995 340 panther Deluxe pretty much the exact same. Same stickers except for mine's green and it has a long track I got it for $200 4 years ago and it sat in a boathouse for 22 years it was almost like brand new Clean the carb Put a new fuel pump in it new gas and it's been up and running ever since the great thing about these air-cooled is they don't need to be super cold out to run themUnlike these liquid-cooled where they overheat if there's not enough snow or if it's too warm out. It's my go to ice fishing sled now Super reliabl
You should have about 1/8 inch of slack / free play in the choke cable. That free play will ensure the plunger is fully seated when it is in the off position. And there are two positions on the choke / enrichener lever. Half and full. You need to put it to the full enrichment setting for cold starts. Looks like you got a nice sled there. Those 340 / 440 fanner Cats are awesome. Enough power to have fun with but not enough to break stuff. Gave you a sub.
Very nice sled. Now what I would do is put seafoam in the gas tank. That will get rid of anything that is still in the fuel system. Then take it out for a good hard run and then it should be fine👍
Those sleds are very cold-blooded they definitely need to warm them up a little bit before they run Good When it starts bogging out give it a little bit of a choke Shut it off immediately and so on and so on and it'll stay running until it warms up. Definitely need to blip the choke Every few seconds at cold start up
I've found this to be 100% true with the sled this weekend. Runs like a top when warm, but takes a long time to get it there! Definitely some choke modulation involved.
I did have to put a new seat cover on though the first -30 ride The seat cover just absolutely crumbled I guess it was so dry rotter from sitting in the boathouse all those years And that cold weather cracked it to pieces.
Great vid! I'd be a little careful with that intake manifold though since it's a two stroke, especially if it is between the carb and the cylinder. You could potentially suffer from a lean meltdown. Not as big a risk on these low hp fanners, but still something to look out for, hard to tell for sure through the video but it kinda sounds like it has a slight lean bog too.
I was hoping someone would comment on this. The revs do kind of hang before coming back down to idle, which says lean air fuel mixture to me. I’ll look into it. Thanks for watching!
Sometimes the gaskets between the intake manifold and the cylinders get brittle and fail. I had the 275cc FA version of this engine do that after many years of service. Not a defect. Just old age.
Yeah. I was amazed that it fired on the third pull after putting maybe an ounce of gas between the two cylinders and then the choke. It had set since last winter without being ran. I let it run long enough to heat up

I agree! It was always at the back of my mind but I just didn’t want to admit it!

Glad you enjoyed. I never fell bad if I learn something new, even if it is a stupid lesson! Hope we both remember the kill switch next time.

Check the sliders and idler wheels. There's a couple of grease nipples on the suspension. Fix it properly.Shouldn't need a primer ball..

Having a skidoo addiction is just as bad as a drug addiction. It cost way too much and one of these days. It might kill you. 😂😂😂😂😂
You know, I've always heard that mechanical addictions were healthier than drug addictions, but potentially just as dangerous if you get in too far!!

I'm also a big fan (pun intended) of air cooled engines just for their simplicity.

Thanks for the tech! Like I said I’m new to sleds! My background is in automotive. I appreciate the sub!
Great looking sled, Good luck!.
Fingers crossed! I had it going around the yard yesterday, the more I rode it the happier it got!
Good motor, single carb, had
A John deere 340.. does 55 mph.
Right on! Hope we get enough snow here to find out!

I'll probably throw a can in there when we get some snow and go out and rip around the yard a bit. Thanks!

The starter's getting a workout... had the right idea cleaning out the tank and mixed fuel down the plug holes...
I was thankful to have the electric start for this process, I still don’t have a battery in it, but it starts pretty easy with the old pull cord!
Didn’t quite believe that you were not snowmobile savvy until the kill switch scenario 😂, great video
Learning more everyday. Thanks for tuning in!

Cold temperatures do some nasty things to soft materials for sure.
I lived on West side for a year.
West side of were?

@@glenmallory9982 It may be a good idea to throw some new gaskets on there just for peace of mind for me. Thanks!
Great video! Impressive that you got it running!(spoilers)
Thanks, they don't always come around, but when they do, its way more satisfying!
Was that a old Wisconsin license plate? I too am a 95% Dutch.
I don't think there are any Wisconsin plates in the video, I'm located in West Michigan!
Take the 340 out of that Puma. And put a 500cc F/C in it. Did that with my daughter's Puma back in 2000.

I'm in the process of buying an all original 1988 Polaris Indy 440 for $500
That sounds like fun. I’ve always had a thing for weird old sleds nobody cared about. Now I can justify owning a couple.

I just seen an old John Deere sled in the back of someone's truck today
Stick around here because I'm planning on doing a video of the old John Deere in the background of these videos soon!@@MichiganMade82
Will do @OutsideMedia1
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't Much.
thats a $300 sled as is.
$Free hundred is cheaper than $Three hundred!
You are going to burn out the starter. Yhu don't fix the fuel pump and service the carb.
And change the fuel lines.
P very obvious that carburetor did not have to as I saw from the very like you said you're the problem stop lying
Reading your comment gave me a stroke.
