When I saw the preview of "What year in the 1800s would you travel back to”," I was super curious as to what your response would be. I honestly would NOT go back to any time in the past. Because I'm a woman and I'm black. Like seriously, I do not find anything about the past beneficial to me. Love your answer.

The stable time loop time travel would be horrific. But if you could change the past...

I think when most people ask "What time period/year would you like to visit" don't fully take into account the reality of what that experience would be. They tend to approach it from an idealized, "invisible onlooker" stance (read: privileged stance). Even just as a white woman I wouldn't want to visit any previous time period just purely on the fact that I'm a woman. Give me a crystal ball to peer into the past, don't ask me to actually go there.

I feel that when ppl say they woud love to live in a certain era don't knoa much about history. I used to want to live in certain eras but the more I learnt about history the less I wanted to live in eras prior to now.

exactly. it would be so wonderful if we had a crystal ball or a magical tv that would actually play the past as it actually existed, but going back in time to anything before the 90s is a no from me and even then idk 😂😂

Thank you for your hard work in bringing such quality educational content to an underserved topic! I appreciate what you’re doing very much. It must be incredibly hard and emotionally draining at times (I remember another video when you talked about outrageously inappropriate comments from ACTUAL LIVE PEOPLE at events) but it’s so, so important. You absolutely should not have to put up with gross, racist, pervy people, and I’m sorry that happens at all, but thank you for not letting it keep you from bringing history alive and educating so many people. It’s truly appreciate! ❤️❤️❤️

As a white woman in Australia you have helped me think and ask about our truly dreadful history of displacement, genocide and slavery (in all but name) of our First Nation People. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!! As a kid in 1970s Nashville, we went on several field trips to historic sites with living history actors, but we only got the same old POV that our history books gave us. The African and Native American actors (and many women as well) were more like props in the background. A very one-sided and flat story. Thank you for your work!!

I have just discovered this channel, and I've spent the last few hours binge-watching your videos. I had to come here and tell you how much I appreciate what you are doing. I've learned more today about American history than I ever learned when I was in school. You have really opened my eyes to a lot of things I experienced when I briefly lived in the US, that I just didn't understand (I'm European). Also, I've become MUCH more aware of things I would have never even thought about before watching these videos. Thank you so much for creating this content!!

You and your outfit are stunning! I just found your channel today and have already binged so many of your videos. I'm glad to see I caught on right as you're beginning to make content again. I wish I'd had information like this growing up. I've heard stories about my enslaved ancestors but to see someone actively producing content that showcases interpretations of their lives, the clothes they wore, and more in-depth information about their experiences has made me feel an even deeper connection to them. It has definitely sparked an interest in me to dig even deeper into my lineage to honor and connect with my ancestors. Thank you for creating this channel and producing such well-researched content!

Cheyney, I discovered your channel after watching a collaboration you did with Abby Cox. I loved your take on things and how honest and open you are about your experiences as an historical interpreter. Furthermore, your efforts to educate and urge to further investigate the truths of the black voice and black history in America. You make sure to to point out the realities of why enslavement was done and the fact that it is still a problem in modern times. All this has made me a big fan of yours. I genuinely appreciate you, as a person, as a woman, as an historical interpreter, and as an advocate for the betterment of life for the African American. This goes beyond the realm of the North American story, and you point people to understand the full implications of slavery as a historical point in more than just the Northern parts of America. Until I heard from you, I simply took for granted the black people of Central and South America. Through further investigation, I have become better educated as to what went on, and the lives of those who went through slavery, and those who today bare the emotional scars of slavery to the south. It also makes me think further about the situation in places like Haiti. Their problem began much further back in history than the modern situation there, and we fail to see that past because we are so focused on the North American lens. Because of your efforts, I have discovered an entire community of black people in Brazil who were originally brought over on slave ships, but never placed into slavery because their ship was destroyed in a storm. They swam to shore, and there, as free people, began a town. Also, your efforts have made me aware of another history I was not aware of: African slaves in the middle east. As a private teacher, I have say in the education of my students. As it happens, I teach a family that came from South Sudan, directly. Helping them become aware of the past here, and the past in Africa, namely in Sudan and Eastern Africa. The children were born here and have only known life in modern North America. They learn in school about slavery as if it was a blip on history. I want these boys to know more. You have started me on the journey to be a better educator as well as educated. I would love for them to understand better how their families history differs from the history of the black American who came from slaves. More than just that lens, but to be aware of the global issue and past, as well as present issue with slavery. What book can I read over the summer that would help me teach them about the global issue?

Starting my educational journey of “white privilege”. I was aggressively bullied as a kid during black history month as I was the only white person in my class in elementary school and kids in general can be cruel. It made me bitter over the years and made it hard to open myself up to more education. Thank you so much for your videos. They have been healing, educational, and helpful for people of all kinds.

Why shouldn’t they…. I’m sure you would care if you saw a person trying to relate to you in person…. I mean all we hear about is black pain… or how terrible white people are… but when someone states how they were treated and how they are healing….. you say why would you share this…. Why have any movement if the other people don’t give a fuck if it’s making a positive difference.

Just wanted to say thanks for bringing light to a part of history that is often forgotten. Especially when it comes to living history and reinactments. What you do is so important and I wish you billions of subscribers just for that. Just found your channel because I watch a lot of British living history channels and UA-cam brought me to you.

As someone with hypermobility and scoliosis, I find wearing supportive garments far more confortable than not doing so. I'm in way less pain when I have proper support.

Thank you for your channel. I accidentally found you on UA-cam a few months ago. I have learned so much from your videos. Years ago while in New Orleans we took a tour of Oak Alley. My husband was from Japan and even he commented how sanitized the presentation was. The real story, of enslaved people, was barely touched on, rather it seemed more important to mention the dogs were buried in the family Cemetary and the front of the property was filmed for GWTW. I’m adopted so I don’t know my own history, just that I’m Danish. On a side note I love to see and live your clothes lol. Be safe. 💕

Really love how you mixed this Ankara fabric with a Victorian (?) style!!! Damn!! I have the orange version that I used already but now....off to the machine. Lovely, really enjoyed this and very happy to find a Black clothing historian. I see the stuff all the time and think meh wouldn't wear but flipping it with Ankara...I'm a believer!

I love that blouse *so much* and the insight into how you pick your fabric for your clothing art made me smile. It's such a wonderful way to marry the past with the future in your clothes the same way you do in your video work.
(p.s. I am 100% here for any and all whiskey recs, I love good bourbon. Glad to someone else who will use a teacup instead of a rocks glass! 🤣)
