    As an inexperienced fish owner, I put a platy and 5 white cloud minnows together in a 10 gallon tank. For the first few months they were fine, but then the platy began chasing the minnows around. He never actually hurt them, but since then I have moved him into a bigger tank by himself and recently introduced 2 females. If you are going to keep them with other fish, get a bigger tank. My goal is to have nothing smaller than a 20 gallon eventually. 10 is honestly a little too small.

      I keep all of my platies in a 20 gallon or larger. You put them in a 10 but 20s are better

    Great idea with freezing food! I've only got one 20g tank so I don't finish food quickly. I'll start using that trick

    Just lost a platy. 1 of 6. Didn't look ill just went slow, rested in plants. Tail stopped fluttering. Put it in separate bowl but died.

    No sooner i had platy they gave birth. 5 babies, now another 3 appeared. You can see the babies eyes in their mothers belly.

    Hi! I just have a couple of questions my first question is... would it be ok for a single plate fish to live alone... and my second question is... I’d it ok to only keep females or only keep males together?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому

      Thanks Cinchaia. Both of those scenarios would be fine.

    Hello would 5 plattys 4 Cory cats and 4 mollies be fine for a 36 gallon? Or is it to much

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Bot Acc! That stocking level would be fine for a 36 galon.

    It's so hard to find information on fish. Every source says a different thing

    • @FishTankBarn

      Hi Savannah! Sorry that you are having troubles. I would say to find your local fish club or check out the aquarium co-op forum.

    If I dont want my platys to breed can I just keep all males or females I currently have 3 danios and 1 platy I had 3 but lost 2 and I'm a beginner have a lot of problems with algae my water is very green even after a water change

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому

      Stuart you can keep all males or all females and they will not breed. I would recommend testing your tank water and seeing what the parameters are and then testing your source water as well.

    Any care ideas for platy fry

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому

      Thank you for watching Lailia’. The care requirements would be the same just the food is smaller. I would use the Aquarium Coop fry food or ground up flake food.

    Could I get away with one or two platies in a 5 gallon with lots of live plants?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  11 місяців тому +1

      You could for sure. To make sure to keep up on your maintenance.

    Are platys bottom or surface dwellers, and what kind of teeth do they have?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому

      Thanks Daiseree! Platies are middle dwellers, I am not really sure about teeth. They are not really aggressive and generally do not harm other fish

    The platies in the aquarium hobby are almost entirely hybrids. The red ones are always hybrids. The wag ones are always hybrids. If you put female Xiphorus malaculus platies we with male Xiphorus helleri swordtails the first generation of babies are red with shorter swords than normal. They look like red swordtails with short swords.
    By breeding back with Xiphorus helleri it is possible to get fish that seem to be red Xiphorus malaculus. In order to get the red color a gene from Xiphorus malaculus must combine with a gene from Xiphorus helleri. The same thing is true true for a wag fish (black fins).
