  • "One thing on any steelheaders bucket list should be catching a steelhead on a skating dry fly. Some of the old school steelheaders would “riffle hitch” the well-known Muddler minnow. By adding a left-handed or right handed riffle hitch to this fly they would get the fly to create more of a wake behind it. This would really get this already versatile classic pattern motoring across a glassy tail out.
Now skating a dry fly for steelhead might be the closest definition to insanity as you can get. Some anglers go a very long time to get one on a skated fly, but you must maintain your composure. The “boil” can come at any time. The last thing you want is a short strike when this happens. That’s why tying this fly with a stinger hook is a great addition. It gets the hook back where it needs to be when the magic happens. The fly is light and easy to cast and will push water very well. So, give this one a go next time you’re are out chasing that unicorn on the water. It’s worth the extra effort."
