    The Showa SFF Forks or Separate Function Forks are an all new fork set designed to not only save weight on the bike, but these also give the rider the ability to adjust the fork ride height and preload via the adjuster on top of the right fork. This new design achieves a lighter overall weight by separating the entire damping assembly into the left fork and then placing a heavier spring in the right fork hence the name Separate Function. Replacing motorcycle fork seals isn't a difficult process as long as you take the correct steps and have the right tools but this is something every motorcycle owner should know how to do. This video walks you through the rebuild process of the left fork which houses the damping assembly and it also shows you what things to look for in order to keep your motorcycles suspension working correctly. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC carries all the parts and tools and fork oil you need to completely rebuild your forks and replace your fork seals.

    will it work if I loosen the bottom bolt on the fork and take the whole cartridge out to change seals? I dont have spring compressor to take fork cap off...plus don't u have to set the preload or rebound settings before u start

    Great video. Question for you. How much oil goes into the inner chamber? I should have 340cc but I’m a little confused, should 340cc be the total for the whole shock, inner/outer combined or just the outer part. If 340cc is the outer part only how much goes into the inner chamber? I cannot find anything online for the specs and do not have a manual. Thanks

    Am I able to do this without the oil level gauge? Can I just over fill it and then it will come out of the holes

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  5 років тому +1

      You can do it that way. It just get's pretty messy with all the oil that comes out of the bleed holes. But if you don't have the gauge, then that's you're best bet. Just make sure you put your hand around the holes when you slide the inner cartridge back in. This is the method used in our showa 49mm fork rebuild video.

  • @codeybean

    I dont even know if you guys respond to videos this old but is it normal for the left side to not return to full height once all back together? I just did both forks (ive never owned sff forks before) and the damper rod was smooth and returned to its normal position fine. but once all together, when i set the fork on its own weight on the ground it sinks a bit compared to the spring side. Is this normal because the spring is on the other side or is something wrong?

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  4 роки тому +1

      Don't worry about that. Some manuals will give a measurement for the length of the inner fork tube with everything assembled and the fork fullly extended. You can check that to make sure the fork is assembled correctly. The only thing holding that fork up with it sitting on it's own weight is air pressure that should be set at atmospheric pressure when fully extended, and only ramps up as the fork is compressed.

      The Showa SFF forks are what came on your bike from the factory so unless someone changed them, these will be your forks.

    hi guys,
    i have another trouble with the inner cartridge oil change.
    i take off the cap, i drain old oil, i let the fork upsidedown for some time.
    then i put the new oil (180ml as the manual say), i make the air come out pushing and pulling several times the inner tube and last i close the cap back with the inner tube completley extended.
    the problem is now; when i push the inner tube it wont come out completely extended.
    it come out for 4 or 5 cm than it stops.
    and if i try to pull it out it returns inside as if there is vacuum inside.
    what i should do?
    tanks.

      @rmatvmc  10 років тому

      federico moroni Sorry to hear of your troubles. Your bike is equipped with the dual chamber forks so I would refer to our Dual Chamber Fork Rebuild videos to begin. Here is a link to the first video Fork seals, change on motorcycle part 1 (of 2), twin chamber . It sounds like one of your inner cartridge seals might be leaking. You have a seal below on the damper rod and one up top with your free piston. Is this happening on both forks or is it just one of them? If you've already tried bleeding the inner cartridge multiple times with no luck, replacing these seals would be my next recommendation.

    • @federicomoroni2946
      @federicomoroni2946 10 років тому

      solved.
      i didn't put enough oil inside.
      probably 180ml was less. now everithing work as well
      tank you for the messege.

    hi, i'm tryng to replace seals on my suzuki rm 125 2008... i have showa forks.
    i did everything u said, now i have to separate fork tubes. but they wont come out.
    i heated with a heat gun (an electric one) but nothing, they remain togheter.
    i alredy removed dust seal and the metal ring.
    what can i do for separate fork tubes?

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  10 років тому

      federico moroni Those fork tubes should come apart if you have already removed the retaining ring. In some cases I have seen the seal almost weld itself to the outer tube in a sense, and what that does it causes the outer bushing to force itself up onto the inner bushing when you slide the forks apart causing the forks to basically jam themselves together. This makes it very difficult to separate the forks tubes so you are on the right track in applying heat. I would try giving it a little more heat and also some sort of lube up in there to see if the seal will pop loose. You basically just have to keep trying as there really isn't any other way to separate them without damaging expensive components. Try what you can and if you still have troubles you are welcome to call in and talk to me and I can try and help talk you through it. Ask to speak to a Tech or me (Wes) @ 1-800-336-5437

    So the guy made a big mistake as far as explaining the cylinder unit oil height and valve assembly, for a showa sff fork the rod has to be fully out out to check height (obviously after u purge out the air) anyway after that the valve assembly goes in. rod has to be pushed in and let out about .79 inchs or 20mm then u should be good to install valve assembly, goofball dosent mention Any of this in the video which is a big step in my opinion as the oil height various depending on where the rod sits and having in the correct spot makes it easier to install valve and if u go and call their number they have no idea what ur talking about luckily I found manuel online explaining the cylinder unit as mine does not only outer tube hope this helps anyone not bashing this guy but u left out a important part leaving me confused and guessing
