    I learned about gooseberry when we moved to the country side and I love it! My favorite thing to make with gooseberries is to crush them with some mint, add a bit of salt and some water if it feels too dry! It is a wonderful refreshing snack for those hot summer days 🥰

      Sounds very interesting, I hadn’t heard about combining it with mint before!

    Last spring I transplanted a 50+ year old gooseberry bush from my Mom’s backyard into ours. It thrived and produced enough berries for a pie. This year it’s even better and there's enough for jam. Last year I weighted three shoots down and covered them with mulch. I now have three new bushes started.

      Nice!! We moved around 10 gooseberries from my in-laws a couple of years ago to our space and added to what we had. We are completely swamped in gooseberries now! 😂

      @@rogerbrandt6678 The thorns are a blessing and a curse. The good part is that I find they keep the local wildlife from eating the fruit. Basically, the birds, deer and other critters eat most of the fruit off my other fruit bushes and trees but largely leave the gooseberries alone. I don't use gloves when picking and have gotten very good at doing it. However, every once in a while I screw up and it is painful.

      Gooseberries root super easily from twigs. Also requires trimming min one third of the plants size

    I bought one bush 30 years ago, I now have 10. Not only do they root where they touch soil if one fruit rolls away and you don't find it it may grow another from the seeds in it.

    I had a bush for decades. The fruit was way too sour.
    A couple of years ago I tried one, absolutely gorgeous. Sweeter than sugar.
    The following day, the birds had stripped the bush
    This time I netted it. And watered it in the extremely dry spell. Now I have a big bush of lovely berries.
    So now I have to pick and use them

    I just had my first home made rhubarb jam, so when my new gooseberries are ready I'm definitely going to put some in jams, but that pie did look good! Do you have the recipe? 👍

    • @KaelaIntheGarden
      @KaelaIntheGarden  2 роки тому

      Hey Nick, if you enjoy rhubarb, you’ll enjoy gooseberries! A pie recipe is as simple as a bit of flour to thicken the juices, sugar to taste (which is always more with tart gooseberries!) and sometimes cinnamon. I’m a throw it all together type girl when it comes to pie fillings!

    I grow a lot of currants. For the first 3 years they require heavy pruning to get them to bush out. I have 2 hinomaki red GB plants. What is the proper pruning for them?

    • @KaelaIntheGarden
      @KaelaIntheGarden  10 місяців тому

      Hi there! I’ve found that pruning isn’t necessary with gooseberries, they’ll do their thing on their own just fine. If you want them to spread, definitely don’t prune them, you’ll want to take those long branches and bury part of it in the dirt. It doesn’t take much, they should naturally arch down. The plant will form roots and start a whole new plant for you. Unsupervised they can take over in a few years so you’ll want to watch them. At that point, feel free to prune them back only as a control. Happy growing!

      @@KaelaIntheGarden Thank you for the answer. I have 2 of the hinomaki reds. They are on their second year of growth and both look rather pathetic. I might prune one of them (the weaker of the 2) and see if that will prompt more growth and just leave the other to see what it does. I got a grand total of 1 berry collectively from them this year. It was an amazingly tasty berry, but also sad there was only one. Hopefully next year they do a little more growing.

    • @KaelaIntheGarden

      I’m a very basic pie type of person…my favorite pie crust comes out of America’s Test Kitchen and then add enough thickener (usually flour but not much is needed as gooseberries have pectin in them to thicken) and then as much sugar as you need to balance that tartness!! 😁 Enhance as you like with cinnamon too!

    Just a quick question, have you tried adding other fruit with the gooseberries when making jam/jelly? If so, what is your suggestion when you have a moment. Thanks so much.

      Hi Dee! The only thing I’ve added to my gooseberry jam was some vanilla bean caviar. Turned out amazing, especially for on ice cream. 😁 I’d pick something sweet to pair with gooseberries. Maybe strawberries? They are close to overlapping in seasons.

      It’s the Pixwell variety. Stays green, if it gets to the magenta tones, it’s past it’s prime. At least according to my husband who loves them tart. 🙂
