So glad to hear this iconic balloon will be flying again!!! I’m autistic and TV presentation happens to be one of my special interests, so I’m pretty happy with this news :D
I've always had a lot of nostalgia for the balloon, especially when special idents were made around big sporting events and of course, the xmas idents that featured the balloon
The balloon idents will always be my favourite BBC One idents. I was born in 1992 so I grew up with these idents in my early childhood. I just love the simplicity of them - the red and orange balloon standing out against the landscapes of the UK
I loved the balloons idents. At the time, they were a radical departure, but as you said, they were all so beautifully shot. I saw the BBC balloon at a festival - circa 1998 - and it looked incredible then, with the colours just popping off it. It’s also worth noting, as a fellow ident nerd; these were the first BBC One idents to use music (other than Christmas idents for the channel) and what music. It almost commanded you to keep watching, before the announcer cut in to say what the next offering would be. To this day, it remains my favourite set of BBC One idents.
The balloon idents were among my earliest memories of watching BBC1 from childhood. Not just the unique globe design and colours, but also the ambient, therapeutic music which suited the varying landscapes. Now I'm extremely excited for the balloon's return!
Best news I have heard so far this year! Best idents ever in my opinion, and a very clever concept, I have always loved TV idents where the main focus is on a larger than life object, in fact I like that more than idents that are fully CGI and the BBC One balloon is a good example of that.
I'm not sure if you listen to the BBC podcast Newscast, but they mentioned recently about this balloon coming back on there! That's where I heard about it! I immediately thought of you 😂 and that you'd be pleased! They had a continuity announcer on who has worked at the BBC for years and remembers the balloon fondly. Worth a listen! Great news indeed. I think the balloon was a fab ident so happy to hear they're coming back!
When I first saw the balloon in 1997 I actually thought it might have been computer generated. Because computers were good enough to do that sort of thing in 1997, believe it or not. Young people today might not believe that.
I like the BBC One balloon idents. Personally I think they should have continued using these idents from 2002 onwards because not only do these idents use BBC One's iconic globe but also the scenery is very nice. These idents would have looked great in HD. Also they could have filmed these idents outside of the UK too (right?). Imagine the BBC One globe balloon flying in Japan or China, or maybe in the USA or Canada... the possibilities are endless. I don't know if this means they're bringing the balloon back for their idents but I do think they should bring those idents back . Otherwise, if they're flying the balloon just for the fun of it then I wish the team good luck.
Those idents are some of my earliest memories of TV. Love the combination of images from around the UK and the music. It was simple but really effective.
I love ❤️ this Balloon ident and was sad when it finished, very nostalgic for it also I love the older bbc logo as well with the Red Green and Blue lines underneath the BBC logo and slanted like the RGB colours representing the Colour Signal in the Camera.
Great news about the balloon I was born in the late 70s and remember the balloon and how gorgeous the scenery was I remember the moving yellow and blue globe bbc logo as well I was impressed of how they did that at the time
The BBC One balloon idents started off as very striking and visually stunning. However, as time went on, the newer balloon idents with a form of “rhythm and movement” (like the festival, bungee jumper and marketplace ones) they added kind of got silly. The beauty of the original balloon idents was that it was slow, no people around and with no “gimmicks”, which set it apart from the other channels. The garish red and orange against beautiful green and grey backgrounds along with that piano jingle is what stuck out and drew the attention.
I’m pretty sure but I will check that my Australian Red Dwarf VII VHS has the old BBC logo on ‘Xtended’ and the new logo on ‘The Rest’ I got them at an auction at Dimension Jump 98 in Liverpool. Also my big memory of this is the Ben Elton show in 1998 which changed the lettering from ‘BBC’ to ‘BEN’
Wow, I thought it was put away forever. Adam you should go there a film it. BTW, the last flight with the balloon 20 years ago ,with the other balloons, should have been the last Balloon ident
I always liked the music/sound cue that's synchronized with the camera change. The sound design managed to sound optimistic without being overly sanitized, a characteristic that's been sorely lacking as of late.
I was 17 when the balloon idents launched (along with the rebrand) and... at the time people didn't really care much about the ident, but they absolutely savaged the rebrand. It seemed they'd spent a fortune going from slanted blocks to upright blocks. And spelling it out instead of using a number... BB CONE was a common ridicule. But yeah. The balloon took a while to grow on me (I liked the Virtual Globe, it felt somehow classy) but eventually it did; and it's warmed in people's hearts since some of what's come afterwards. I just hope people don't misinterpret the hobbyist flight as an official ident relaunch. Although, calling themselves the Bristol Balloon Collectors - BBC - isn't exactly subtle...
It sure has been a while, but it's good to see something old be brought back - in this case: the BBC hot-air balloon. At least it's a hot-air balloon and not an XXXXXL helium balloon (the latter would be *so* sexy, but also it wouldn't last as long, not to mention it would be a waste of gas!)
They should do a 4K upscale of the original shots and left in 4:3 as I think they were shot in 4:3. Don't bother re filming them in 4K using drones and a baked and ripped hot air balloon which idk why they can't make a new one as close to the original.
I didn't dislike the idents that followed the balloon because "Change is bad." I dislike them because they're awful. I didn't grow up with the balloon ident, I was used to several idents before this one. So if "Change is bad" was my philosophy then by your logic I would have hated the balloon idents. But I didn't. But thanks for putting words in my mouth anyway.
The controller of BBC 1 at the time made no secret fact that she hated the balloon as it was slow and distant she was also head of children's programming she explained the Richard Bacon who was a presenter of Blue Peter at the time one of the Sunday newspapers had reported the Richard had an illegal drug he had admitted he had done so and very much regrets it he had not only let himself down but most viewers also but the team on Blue Peter worked very hard to make sure it continued to be one of your favorite programmes
The BBC1 Balloon was cool I was a teenager at the time the end of the BBC1 balloon was different in every region English regions just got standard Through the night on BBC1 BBC News 24 BBC Scotland's effort was nothing special Wales made some effort by giving an extra long look at the ident Northen Ireland gave the balloon a cracking send off even treating us to a final showing of the clock
You're trippin'. The one in Scotland at 7:02 is the best of the lot. BTW It wasn't BBC Scotland/Wales/NI etc. that did their own - the were all shot by one crew moving around the country and the agency selected the shots they wanted to use.
The balloon not coming back on tv its just coming to a ballon festival for a one off showcases owned by tge ballon enthusiastic fan group so they will put it to air on a ballon festival but no plans to bring back to tv as news was a lie thought bbc was ditching currently idrbts and bring back classic idealntd
Also, to save anyone else watching this clickbait, the balloon isn't returning anywhere onscreen and isn't even in the care of the BBC anymore. Some balloon enthusiasts took it out for a flight one day a month ago. That's literally it. Non-news.
The bristol balloon collectors have said that the bbc globe will be attending 5 events thos year. Bristol and telford have been confirmed with longleat and northampton likely being the other 2

I remember seeing this on BBC America back in the day. One of the best idents ever made. ❤
This is a lovely recap. Born in 1997, I vaguely remember them too!
It's iconic that represents BBC One!
They should bring this back, completly timeless. With the exception of the circles idents they've been shocking since.

And she shall fly again!

i remember seeing these idents on my local PBS station when i was 10 years old in the states. Glad it's making a comeback

I would’ve liked the BBC balloon to fly over twin falls in idaho, and Colorado Springs in Colorado
Those idents are some of my earliest memories of TV. Love the combination of images from around the UK and the music. It was simple but really effective.
Always loved the balloon idents;
Remember when they came out watching them on my uncles Sony Triniton TV, ironically he lived in Bristol!
I love ❤️ this Balloon ident and was sad when it finished, very nostalgic for it also I love the older bbc logo as well with the Red Green and Blue lines underneath the BBC logo and slanted like the RGB colours representing the Colour Signal in the Camera.
This ident was used for the BBC America Presents logo
Even it first seen in 1997 to 2002, I would be hyped to see it again in 2023 after 20 years of silence!
Great news about the balloon I was born in the late 70s and remember the balloon and how gorgeous the scenery was I remember the moving yellow and blue globe bbc logo as well I was impressed of how they did that at the time
Awesome. I'd heard about its return, and new a balloon preservation group had it.
It’s finally back! I am very happy to see it again!!
Wow what a throwback 🤣 remember these!!!

Thanks for posting Adam!
My pleasure!
Always liked this BBC one ident set. But i did love the next set that came along in 2002. Reminds me of being a teenager.
That Balloon was a throwback for sure.
Those were the best idents.they should bring globes back in some form
Nostalgia at its finest.
These idents were before my time, but they are the best in UK TV history
(As an American) I'm glad to see them bring back this icon.

There was the balloon flying by Blackpool Tower I believe?
I like the BBC 1 Balloon indets alot because It took me back to my teenage years despite the fact that I was only 13 at the time.
THIS IS THE BEST BBC NEWS EVER (except its rebrand)
Holy shit, this awoke a memory i didnt even know I had

Very interesting video nice to know what happened to the balloon used on the bbc1 logo
seeing this balloon makes me think of classic Casualty
Welcome back Balloonie
Sort of. Wish it was back on screen. An iconic ident in its day.
I was 17 when the balloon idents launched (along with the rebrand) and... at the time people didn't really care much about the ident, but they absolutely savaged the rebrand. BBC America used to use the balloon ident back when it first became a channel.
i remember they did one for 1999 eclipse
Awesome news!

BBC 1
Does this mean we’ll be getting some new idents shortly?
I'm hoping that formed part of BBC 100. It's a shame BBC didn't use 2022 to bring back old idents.
Great I dent!
Legend says: The BBC One Balloon is coming back in 2023!
I hope the globe returns
I was born in early 90s and do not remember these balloons, the rhythm and movements idents are ones that stick out to me.
Its back!
Ah! Balloono!
They should do a 4K upscale of the original shots and left in 4:3 as I think they were shot in 4:3. Don't bother re filming them in 4K using drones and a baked and ripped hot air balloon which idk why they can't make a new one as close to the original.
I wonder which other balloon festivals might it go to?
It has already been confirmed for bristol and telford, i think it will also be attending longleat and northampton
Well well well
What about the BBC1 Circles idents
Crap
Let’s hope the Americans don’t shoot it down thinking it’s Chinese 😄😄
YOOOO
this balloon is probably the most famous balloon in the UK.
That or G-PIPY
I didn't dislike the idents that followed the balloon because "Change is bad." I dislike them because they're awful. I wanna track the balloon
me living in bbc ballon latinamerica
I must mention Adam that "etc" is not required after you have announced all four home nations of the UK. There are no others.
What about the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Horkney or Shetland Isles?
@@robertanthonyfairweather3416thwy are not in the UK and so never was in the EU

Its not a one off its attending 4 other events THIS year
Just take the original shots and upscale them to 4K even if it's In 4:3 on your 16:9 4K OLED telly.
222nd like!
7:29 "generic approach"? Nothing generic going off that example, mate. It's completely woke, hence why they did it.

Saw it at midlands air festival twice 2 weeks ago, they are probably gonna bring it to bristol Balloon Fiesta in august
The bristol balloon collectors have said that the bbc globe will be attending 5 events thos year. Bristol and telford have been confirmed with longleat and northampton likely being the other 2
This video is mainly bland padding and flannel. Don't recommend stuff like this to me UA-cam.
Yawn.
BRING BACK BALLOON, BBC!
