I remember watching this in the early 1980s. It was a year before I had yet bought my first VCR and colour tv set, so I recorded this on audio tape. I don't have it anymore. Brings back memories from that time period.
Spock is my all time favorite TV character. To my delight, he has managed to appear in other ST series and movies. I have followed Mr. Nimoy over the years and find him to be humorous and inspiring. I watched the original series as a kid. I must confess that I had a crush on Kirk, but wanted to be Spock!
Ah, i remember this Star Trek Special. It did ran in the early 90s on german TV, dubbed of course but having Mr. Nimoys german Dubb voice from Star Trek again. I love this special because it gave a really interesting insight from Mr. Nimoys point of view.
I don't understand why everyone hated 'the man trap'. In Shatner's book he said similar things saying it was "dreadful!". It was one of my favorite earlier ones I don't know why they all hated it. Sure it wasn't as god as 'where no man has gone before' or 'the naked time' but it had a good mystery and exciting plot.
More recently, Nimoy hosted a Star Trek marathon on TV and said that he was not the first choice to be Mr. Spock. He said Gene Roddenberry had considered the actor George Lindsey for the role. Of course, Lindsey did go on to fame on the Andy Griffith Show as Gomer Pyle's cousin, Guber. P.S - I wish Lindsey had gotten the part along with Don Knotts as Capt. Kirk, Floyd Lawson (Floyd the Barber) as Scotty & Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea) as Uhura.
wow, i havent seen this since i was a teenager. My family got their very first VCR (betamax no less! LOL) and it was one of the first things I taped... and then watched to smithereens. I was 13 years old. this really does bring back memories. thanks for posting this!!
Indeed Star Trek would not have been the show it turned out to be without Spock's character. It's also really funny how they made up the Klingon's with nothing more than shoe polish on their faces. It's also interesting how ignorant studio execs were by insisting that Spock's character be deleted (among other things) when he ultimately turned out to be one of if not THE strongest character on the show. Star Trek was the 1st *believable* spaceship/space travel show of the period.
That story was written by Harlan Ellison & years later he published the original script. In it, a guest star (not McCoy, but a crew member) deals in 'drug music' - sound waves that get people stoned. He tries to get away by jumping thru the time portal. In March 2009, Ellison filed suit against Paramount for payment of 25% of net receipts from merchandising, publishing and other income from the episode since 1967. The suit also names the Writers Guild for failing to act on his behalf.
One thing that always bugged me about City On The Edge Of Forever, the transporter rooms were designed for 6, and after rescuing McCoy, they had 7 to beam up.
@sbergman27 Yeah, I wouldn't say he exactly got "sick" of his character, rather (and this was mainly was "IANS" focused on) he wanted to be seen as MORE than just Spock. He wanted to be recognized as Leonard Nimoy as well. In 1977 that was difficult for him. However, after proving to be not only a marvelous actor, but director and photographer as well he has gone on to make quite a name for himself outside of the ST franchise as well. It's well deserved for he is truly a medley of talent.
Currently the only deceased members of TOS are DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Majel Barrett and of course her spouse Gene Roddenberry. Both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are 83 years old, both of which were born within 4 days of each other in March of 1931. Suffice to say they likely don't have a great many years left among us and it'll be a very sad day when they pass :( Both look VERY good for being in their mid 80's though :)
No man has ever boldly gone before into my underwear. Well, except for me, of course. I love getting wasted late at night and watching the Trekkie shit mixed into my video adfeed along with all the prank videos. Viva la UA-cam, motherfucka muchachos.
'City on the edge of forever' & 'Assignment: Earth' are two of my favourites. Indeed, the two are connected through the prospect of nuclear conflict. I have met up with a similar dilemma, in respect to the two A-bombs dropped on Japan. It creates a moral conflict in this era. But, as with 'City on the edge of forever', the events have to be analysed in 1940s terms.
@scorpioman1000 That limp is left over from the underused 'Rigel VII battle' back story. The crew were all hurt and rapped up. You can even see Lylers hand all bandaged up in the bridge scenes. You remember Pikes line to his bridge crew: "You feel up to it?" ?
*shakes finger* The series was produced from 1966-67 by Desilu Productions, and by Paramount Television from 1968-69. Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8, 1966 to June 3, 1969. - From the wiki. Anyway, yeah I see your point. =) I think the censors just thought it was too challenging of many at-the-time-American-mores. The Kirk-Uhura lip lock comes to mind.
The sets were the weakest part of TOS but they made the show so interesting it didn't really matter to people. Even TNG had "cheap" sets at times but they always managed to introduce new and better things to the show that made you overlook this. Star Trek has truly been an innovative show that has actually resulted in technologies that have been very close to Gene Roddenberry's conception of the future. Some of our devices today have an uncanny resemblance to trek-tech.
At one point, he did get sick of the character, and wrote a novel about it. He warmed up to the role, of course, and is still doing it after 33-34 years.
Shat and Nimoy were pretty good friends for a long time (Nichelle Nichols and Bill both made up years later.) Also, Koenig and Takei were actually good friends throughout the years, too.
2:44 'This is our place of my family. This is our place of Hakuna Matata' is what I was half-sure Spock was gonna say here; and the phrase turned out to be something opposite.
I still feel bad that Nashville Tennessee did not show the original Star Trek which contributed to the low ratings that doomed this show. Nashville's channel 4 decided to put on live country music at the time in place of this much heralded cultural phenomenon. It wasn't until the second half of the third season that they finally started showing Kirk, Spock and McCoy. I have often wondered, over the years, what other cities followed Nashville's lack of interest in Star Trek.
what's he talking about, I love The Man Trap? And it's very star trek in theme--an alien monster that's more human than it seems, and the regret at having to destroy it
I heard Number One was cut by NBC because the network thought it was a conflict of interests for the executive producer of the show to be dating and married to one of the performers, not because they couldn't believe a female could be the XO of a starship.
There's a missing part, about 'The Menagerie', where Nimoy says, "For me, in its new form, 'The Menagerie' is Star Trek at its best!" I have no idea why people deleted out this most important part in this show. Here is the full version: ua-cam.com/video/fqVZUe0iAsY/v-deo.html
Not sure if I believe that either, given that Goldie Hawn was on Rowan and Martin's laughin wearing nothing more than a fireman's hose and meowing 'come on baby light my fire' weekly.
Did the network really love it enough to order a second pilot? Or because the first one was so expensive to make, they wanted to give one more chance (after retooling to keep the suits happy) to reap the costs of the first pilot back? Possibly a combo of both...
Actually they all could have saved her by shouting out to her, she would have seen the truck anyways, and the driver would have seen her too and stopped in time. There are loopholes, but it was 1 of the very best episodes, but so was Man Trap. I'm glad I wrote all the best episodes, just last year, in fact, and they went back in time and were stolen by plagiarists!
At 8:05 there's a missing part--an episode that Nimoy says is "Star Trek at it's best". Why did you not include it? Anyway if people want to see it, it's here: ua-cam.com/video/fqVZUe0iAsY/v-deo.html
The cast of Star Trek TOS are eternal. RIP to all actors who are not among us!
"I've always been moved by that story."
Me too, Mr. Nimoy, me too.
I remember watching this in the early 1980s. It was a year before I had yet bought my first VCR and colour tv set, so I recorded this on audio tape. I don't have it anymore. Brings back memories from that time period.
your're my favorite alien!
I had on audiotape the episode with Macbeth... Deep lovely memories, transcendent.
Leonard Nimoy is a great guy. I had to laugh a little when he said ``And we've been friends ever since then´´, because no one who was in the show is.
I have never seen this until now. thank you very kindly! live long and prosper
I remember watching this special on black and white televison in the early 1980s. Anything about Star Trek on tv quickly grabbed my attention.
Ah, i remember this Star Trek Special. It did ran in the early 90s on german TV, dubbed of course but having Mr. Nimoys german Dubb voice from Star Trek again.
I love this special because it gave a really interesting insight from Mr. Nimoys point of view.
"He knows, doctor. He knows." That is one of my favorite episodes!!!! Its so sad!
I always liked "City On the Edge of Forever" best, and am happy to know it is Nimoy's favourite, as well!
WOW this is cool!! I like seeing these vintage specials!

P.S - I wish Lindsey had gotten the part along with Don Knotts as Capt. Kirk, Floyd Lawson (Floyd the Barber) as Scotty & Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea) as Uhura.
PieFights - This was available on VHS, back in the 1980s. It also aired on UHF stations from time to time over the years.
The idea of a woman as Number One was FANTASTIC. Incredible at the time!
wow, i havent seen this since i was a teenager. My family got their very first VCR (betamax no less! LOL) and it was one of the first things I taped... and then watched to smithereens. I was 13 years old. this really does bring back memories. thanks for posting this!!
RIP Spock. You will always live long and prosper in my heart and memories.
Yes he will live forever. Nimoy also did some westerns. Extraordinary actor!
''some think we were still making them today!'' -if only...if only-
indeed powerfull episode...non of the spin-off shows ever came close to that,
When this show first aired, I tape recorded it! Many thanks for putting it on UA-cam.
I have this on video tape and was actually thinking of looking for it about a week ago. Guess I won't have to look now.
JCStriktland - Yes, Shanters' version was entitled "Captains Chair" It was also available on video, and aired occasionally.
RIP Leonard Nimoy....Live Long and Prosper
Thanks, Mr. Nimoy! Fun summary.
Hello from 2019!
RIP Leonard Nimoy
Thank you so much for all the great videos!
This is amazing. Unbelievably cool. Thank you so much for posting.
I'm with you, and it was a study in solitude. and was 1 of the very best episodes.
a bus driver in my neighbourhood look like leonard nimoy,
toa payoh interchange republic of singapore.
a great likeness
It's so strange that such ridiculous things were still considered unacceptable in relatively near past. So much improvement was done since then :)
I saw it on TV too, it's part of the current TOS syndication package, to up the number of episodes to 80.
RIP Leonard Nimoy.
I remember watching the first episode as a kid .
Live long and prosper ol' television friend.

Star Trek was the 1st *believable* spaceship/space travel show of the period.
Awesome, thank you very much.
ooh i watched it and yes it was quite funny! thanks for the awesome vid recommendation, way better than what youtube recommends lol.
Good night sweet prince you will be missed

So glad they stopped using paper as data presentation medium before the first season actually started.
Now that's good scifi.
The comedy team of Shatner and Nimoy.
One thing that always bugged me about City On The Edge Of Forever, the transporter rooms were designed for 6, and after rescuing McCoy, they had 7 to beam up.
@calliesaiyan Star Trek wouldnt be the same without him. It would be boring without Shatner. He is what made Trek so enjoyable and fun
@sbergman27 Yeah, I wouldn't say he exactly got "sick" of his character, rather (and this was mainly was "IANS" focused on) he wanted to be seen as MORE than just Spock. OMG YES- He has a swimmers body!! =DDD and also i like it when he says hell alot
Without Leonard Nimoy, there is no star trek. Brent Spiner from NG is the only one who comes close. Go with Datas gut. Lol.
No man has ever boldly gone before into my underwear.
Well, except for me, of course.
I love getting wasted late at night and watching the Trekkie shit mixed into my video adfeed along with all the prank videos.

Today, the network would just cancel it even if it was their fault the premier was met with a poor reception.
How would they screw up?
No vision anymore
A new chemistry? aww
yasss!!

I wonder what Nimoy thought of Star Trek: Enterprise
This was made during the fall of 1983 as Star Trek
III:The Search For Spock was being made.
NEED A TIME MACHINE!! id use it and run onto that set and take him home...:D...ahh dirty thoughts in a tardis ensue...
2:44 'This is our place of my family. This is our place of Hakuna Matata' is what I was half-sure Spock was gonna say here; and the phrase turned out to be something opposite.
In an answer to all disputes: at 1:05, Leonard Nimoy introduces himself, and pronounces his name NEEmoy

So, they chose Johnny Cash over Captain Kirk? Fascinating ...
MASTER XEHANORT!!! x'3
dont start your name we know who you are you rock dude
I didn't think the salt monster episode was the bad.
what's he talking about, I love The Man Trap? And it's very star trek in theme--an alien monster that's more human than it seems, and the regret at having to destroy it
Didnt Shatner host a special too? I could've sworn he did but cant find it anywhere.
We need a Star Trak and Dr Who movie.
I heard Number One was cut by NBC because the network thought it was a conflict of interests for the executive producer of the show to be dating and married to one of the performers, not because they couldn't believe a female could be the XO of a starship.
I was afraid of the salt monster as a kid
Rest in Peace, Mr. Spock....
"Don't leave me hanging, Spock!" -- what Dr. McCoy might say
@bondurango I would also cast, Hal Smith, who played Otis Campbell (Otis the drunk) as Mr. Sulu.
Mr. Nimoy said >for the next hour......." This file is only 10 minutes long. Where is the rest of it?
I have vague memories of watching this special. What was its original air-date?
@ItchythaWookiee He has done I Am Spock, which is his second autobiography. :)
Favorite TOS episode: "The Immunity Syndrome"
No, strike that, "Court Martial"
There's a missing part, about 'The Menagerie', where Nimoy says, "For me, in its new form, 'The Menagerie' is Star Trek at its best!" I have no idea why people deleted out this most important part in this show. Here is the full version:
ua-cam.com/video/fqVZUe0iAsY/v-deo.html
leonard nimoy is the best spock there is no spock better than leonard nimoy spock
yes amazing haha
Sadly, not TOS-R (The Original Series-Remastered) for whatever reason, so you've got to get this off of UA-cam, like I will soon.
WOW. 4:21 WAS DR. SPOCK the first ever to cast an IPAD GESTURE???
*Mister
Not sure if I believe that either, given that Goldie Hawn was on Rowan and Martin's laughin wearing nothing more than a fireman's hose and meowing 'come on baby light my fire' weekly.
'Too cerebral and wouldn't sell' lulz gotta love sphincter TV execs underestimating the American audience. As usual.
nice music at ca. 2.48.
do you know who scored that episode?
Spock was the life of star trek
I know he isn't now. I got this joker to thank for telling us otherwise.
Yeah, I knew McCoy and Scotty died, but I didn't know about Spock.
How are the people who live in Romulus, Mich. called?
Did the network really love it enough to order a second pilot? Or because the first one was so expensive to make, they wanted to give one more chance (after retooling to keep the suits happy) to reap the costs of the first pilot back? Possibly a combo of both...
@bondurango I think you'll find it originally had SCOTTY dealing drugs! And Gene Roddenbury didn't let that script happen, for obvious reasons :P
Actually they all could have saved her by shouting out to her, she would have seen the truck anyways, and the driver would have seen her too and stopped in time. There are loopholes, but it was 1 of the very best episodes, but so was Man Trap. @zensorship I stand corrected.
nimoy isnt dead: }
