I really like the film, and the extended Black Freighter version and am of the opinion that it is filmmaker/directors/writers job to introduce the audience to new characters. If you need to have read a book or a comic to understand basic lead characters in any film then that is a bad film. An obvious example is The Empire Strikes back. You don't need to have seen Star Wars to understand who is who because the script and the Director do an excellent and efficient job at re-introducing the main players and their relationships in the opening act.
