my favorite parts of the drarry fandom is ppl who make jokes about Draco actually just trying to flirt or befriend with Harry most of the time but failing utterly due to just not knowing how to be nice and Harry misinterpreting compliments as sarcastic (because Draco is a compulsive sneerer). These jokes are usually connected to the first three school years. it's a bit of the "he's pulling your hair because he likes you" thing which I'm not usually very favorable of, but I think the charm comes from seeing Draco failing with that tactic.
Yes! I love Draco's vulnerability, and the snarky (and obvious to anyone over the age of thirteen) veneer he uses to hide it. He really is unequipped to just be a kid and make friends. Pretty sad. But he's my favorite and has the most potential for change and growth.

In a perfectly canon universe (minus that epilogue, and also now The Cursed Child which really confirms parts of it) the two could've at least made some amends after the Battle of Hogwarts. There's also the fact that three years was enough to really mature Harry on his own, and that kind of significant change is possible with relationships, whether it's putting some things to the past or making new things for the present and future. Add that scene that was altered in the films with Draco going to help Harry, and you've basically got a guaranteed bond if not somewhat probable romance (has their sexuality really ever been confirmed?). The books seem to paint it more from such a sarcastic perspective, and I do love that side of Harry that the films never show, but the films actually make it serious and in a number of people's' minds (including mine) plausible.

Within a day all the Slytherins are sent to the nurse for alcohol poisoning and Dumbledore has to ban the game. Draco is sitting alone at the Slytherin table and mutter this must be Potter's fault. Meanwhile at the teacher's table Snape takes a shot.

YOU JUST MISSED A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR CHARACTER REDEMPTION, DIRECTORS! NICE JOB! Another was in PoA where Draco bites his lip and checks Harry out during their quarrel.
just remember draco didn't tell ANYONE about harry being in the malfoy manor, and he had every reason to... he also was hesitant when joining the 'bad side' during deathly hallows 2 because of harrys death. he cares about harry, and although he shows it in unhealthy ways, it was how he was brought up. his father raised him to believe purebloods were the superior wizards, this also links to why he's mean to harry; because he had a muggle mother.
I was bullied pretty badly, but I still ship Drarry. Why? Because I love the concept of the bully and the victim getting together and getting to understand each other rather than be rivals. When I was being bullied, that was something that really bugged me, what the hell was going through my bully's head? Why did they go out of their way just to make me feel like shit? The fact is with Drarry is that they would have been close friends (in my opinion) if it weren't for Draco's bullying and their general misunderstandings. They both have mutual obsessions over the other, an interesting detail I always loved about the ship. It hits hard with me in a way that I love. Tbh is always wanted to be friends with the people who bullied me, and seeing Draco and Harry in a romantic relationship is something which resonates within me. Of course, no offence to those who don't ship it, this is just my idiotic personal opinion. XD

being a dracoXharry shipper from long before the last book was published, it actually ruined the rest of the books for me. I loved Draco and so desperately wanted him to be redeemed (still do) and I HATED how the last few books were handled. Really hated. So much so I can't even go back and read them. It's kinda sad how much my commitment to my vision of how the series should have played out ruined something that I used to love so much.

Aww, Year 8 Drarry! Also post-Hogwarts Drarry where a few years have passed and Harry had dealt with most of his shit from the war and he & Draco can meet properly again. Obviously, I ship it a lot. Also, you haven't mentioned it but after Deathly Hallows they also kind of both have life debts with each other, since Harry saved Draco and then Narcissa saved Harry. I like the grudging respect that comes from that. The idea that no one in the magical community trusts Draco after the final battle and he fears for his life, and Harry is the only one not to fear him because Draco owes him. And Draco trusts Harry won't kill him because, well, he's Harry, and also he saved his life once, he isn't about to murder him. One of my favourite post Hogwarts dynamics! ^^

I like Darry because I honestly think there is more evidence for them than Harry and Ginny. I never considered Draco an enemy, only a rival. Under the right circumstances, they would have be friends. And don't consider Draco a bully because for the most part Harry and Draco are evenly matched. (Draco is a bully to Neville). But the only reason Harry ever comes out on top is because of Hermione or Ron. There is enough interaction between Draco and Harry for gay subtext. And from a narrative point, it would makes sense if they did get together. Harry disliked Draco because on some level he had feelings for him and vice versa. (But I prefer Harmony). And I totally the hate the way everyone treats Slytherin house. Most of the problems in the series stems from how people judge each other based on the house they are in.
Mallika Banerjee I used to hate the Slytherin house because I thought they were all evil, but now, rereading it, they aren't necessarily evil, they're dedicated to their passions, and will do anything to succeed. They just get a bad reputation based on the prejudices and actions of their predecessors that caught attention in the Wizard World.
Mallika Banerjee I know take Snape for example, he was in Slytherin and is probably one of the best heroes in Harry Potter. He's one of the main reasons why I started to love Slytherin.
I'm a huge shipper of Drarry. I never really liked how Ron spoke about slytherins, and not just because that's my house. but because he's judging without knowing them. And yes Draco is abit of a... bully... but if u think about it, he was raised to believe things by his father and it doesn't help that his father worked for Voldemort. They both have much in common, you just have to look beyond what u see/read and go deeper into the character. But ofcourse this is only my opinion.

I think the appeal of many ships that involve bullying is that you can play around with the motives quite a bit. Sure, you can think of it as plain, old dislike, but there's also a lot of other reasons you'd try to get someone's attention in this very clumsy way. I can think of 3 really insistent bullies from way back, who made my schoolyears pretty fucking nightmarish, and as it turned out, at least 2 of them had a crush on me. Pulling pigtails, anyone?

Although I don't ship Drarry, I get kinda upset when JK is like "I don't like Draco" I feel like it's a shallow move to create a character who is nothing more than a bully and a chance to add more conflict to the plot. I feel like there's this brilliance to Draco where it's all he may be mean but there's a big chance he was abused as a child just like Harry. I think everybody looks at Draco like he's such a big bully and mean and didn't deserve to survive, but Draco might have had a worse life than Harry. I mean if you think about it Harry gets out of the Dursly's home and gets to come to the lovely Weasly house. He's well liked and has a many friends and admirers. He's in the most liked house and he has Dumbledore on his side. Draco however probably grew up in a cold household where his father was cruel and his mum comes from one of the darkest wizarding families ever. He doesn't get to choose if he's good or bad. He has this choice forced upon him. He also probably doesnm't like Harry cause he caused great shame to his family. Also Draco doesn't have a Weasly home to go to and he doesn't have warm friends or teachers on his side. He is forced to kill Dumbledore which he doesn't in the end but you could tell how torn he was. He isn't evil. He's probably just hurt.

Also 1: Drarry is honestly one of my OTPs 2: My favourite moment (more directed towards the movie) is when Draco asks Harry if he actually fainted because of the look of real concern on his face (until Goyle ruins it).
Drarry is taking over my life. I mean Draco has a great redemption arc and by the end of the series I couldn't help but ship them. I really want to do a complete reimagining of all 7 books but with Harry sorted into Slytherin where he actually becomes really close friends with Draco. Perhaps then Draco would actually see more development from what might be a (not-so) friendly rivalry with Harry (who might still be really good friends with Ron and Hermionie) to a 4th member of the main cast. And when they reach the climax of each year, it would be nice to see more of Draco's involvement in them such as: Draco helping with the puzzles to reach the philosopher's stone, Draco helping to find the chamber of secrets and so forth. I know this would completely turn around some books like Prisoner of Azkaban and Half Blood Prince, but it's an interesting thought especially with what the relationship (romantically or platonically) between him and Harry would have turned into. That being said, I also like to theorise what would happen if Draco was sorted into Gryffindor with Harry and the effects of that with his family and his development in attitude.
My favourite moments were probably when Harry didn't leave Draco to burn to death, the fact that Draco didn't identify Harry (which probably saved him from Voldemort killing him and/or his friends), and all those little things that Harry noticed about Draco in Half Blood Prince (an example being the fact that he saw Draco looked extremely unhealthy, much like Tonks at the time.) My least favourite moments were when Harry turned down Draco's offer of friendship and when Draco paralyzed Harry and broke his nose.

I have many favorite Drarry moments, as any Drarry shipper does. There is of course the rescue from the fire, and the lie that Draco does not recognize Harry in order to protect him, both in the Deathly Hallows. However, I also love the fight scene in the Half Blood Prince, despite how much hate it gets. Draco started the fight because he was scared; he was a Malfoy, highly esteemed, and he'd just been caught crying by the one who was supposed to be his enemy. Harry fought back, of course, because who wouldn't? Also among my favorites is the deleted scene from the Deathly Hallows in which Draco abandons the dark side the moment Harry reveals that he is alive, and goes bolting back to the light side. That scene was ultimately what made me a die-hard Drarry fan. Draco believed so much in Harry, put so much faith in him, enough to flee from the person he fears the most, leaving his parents behind, and if I recall correctly, he even threw Harry his wand at some point(?). I don't have any least favorite scenes. To me, all Drarry scenes are amazing.

I ship drarry and i have been bullied in the past too. When i see (or read it) Harry and Draco attack each other i see it as angry to the outside world and that they feel safe to take out on the other. Also jeasouly plays in thie hatred as well. Since neither one knows the other that well they both wish to be the other. Draco wants others to look up to him and see him as good and not just his family name, as Harry desire a family and to be recongized in that way and not just by the "boy who lived". To me their relationship has many different layers and very cool to see them. I also dont mind Draco and Hermoine or Harry and Hermoine (although i do feel bad for Ron in both cases ). However, the Harry and Ginny relationship seems force to me.

I love your observation of their confidence vs bravery contradiction. I'd never thought it out in that exact way before and it's super poetic! I can tell you, maybe my favourite (and I've read a LOT) Drarry fanfictions are the Friend Like Me/Friend Like You pair. The first is in Draco's perspective. I believe Harry asks Draco what things would be like if he'd accepted Draco's friendship before sorting in first year. The reader is launched into an elaborate fantasy taking place in the course of the novels, but with Harry in Slytherin, and as Draco's best friend. In the sequel, made by a fan of the first, we go through the same events in Harry's perspective, the narrative change being legillimacy (spelling, I have no idea) with the attempt prompted by intent to snoop into reasons for Draco's Suspicious behavior. They also continue the narrative past where the original work left off, creating a happy ending (give or take) epilogue (presumably as a fix it to all of our decimated emotions thxxxxxxx). They're seriously very very good and I recommend them.

In the book (because the movies don't show any of my favorite parts >:c) It says that when Draco is on the broomstick with Harry, Draco is holding on so tightly to Harry that it hurts. I personally am not a Drarry shipper. At least, not in the romantic sense. In general I guess I just have a hard time getting into male slash pairings (femslash on the other hand...). Even when I do support them, I tend to be passive and less passionate about it. I do think the idea of a friendship between Harry and Malfoy is compelling so I understand it. I really love your videos, you cover such a broad range of topics even when doing specific pairings that I'm not into. I like how you discuss a couple or trope, how it is engendered by the context of the source material or used in fiction, then relate that back to wider themes, such as the role of the author/creator, what it canon, why or why not certain tropes or shippings are popular and what that says about the fandom culture. Keep up the good work. :) Maybe I'll see some pairings I support eventually.

He said: " Think about it. when they first met at Madame Malkin's, Draco tried to impress harry. he didn't know who harry was and no offense, but harry was more than shaggy dressed. That means he was undoubtedly not Draco's class. but Draco didn't care. when they first met on the train, Draco offered his friendship. just remember draco didn't tell ANYONE about harry being in the malfoy manor, and he had every reason to... he also was hesitant when joining the 'bad side' during deathly hallows 2 because of harrys death. he cares about harry, and although he shows it in unhealthy ways, it was how he was brought up. his father raised him to believe purebloods were the superior wizards, this also links to why he's mean to harry; because he had a muggle mother.

I was bullied pretty badly, but I still ship Drarry. Why? Because I love the concept of the bully and the victim getting together and getting to understand each other rather than be rivals. When I was being bullied, that was something that really bugged me, what the hell was going through my bully's head? Why did they go out of their way just to make me feel like shit? The fact is with Drarry is that they would have been close friends (in my opinion) if it weren't for Draco's bullying and their general misunderstandings. They both have mutual obsessions over the other, an interesting detail I always loved about the ship.
It hits hard with me in a way that I love. Tbh is always wanted to be friends with the people who bullied me, and seeing Draco and Harry in a romantic relationship is something which resonates within me. Of course, no offence to those who don't ship it, this is just my idiotic personal opinion. XD

being a dracoXharry shipper from long before the last book was published, it actually ruined the rest of the books for me. I loved Draco and so desperately wanted him to be redeemed (still do) and I HATED how the last few books were handled. Really hated. So much so I can't even go back and read them. It's kinda sad how much my commitment to my vision of how the series should have played out ruined something that I used to love so much.
Same... I fear the last books/movies. Before I enjoyed watching them but it keeps getting darker and I don't like it. I watched it all, and after I finished I was like, wtf. Aww, Year 8 Drarry! Also post-Hogwarts Drarry where a few years have passed and Harry had dealt with most of his shit from the war and he & Draco can meet properly again. Obviously, I ship it a lot.
Also, you haven't mentioned it but after Deathly Hallows they also kind of both have life debts with each other, since Harry saved Draco and then Narcissa saved Harry. I like the grudging respect that comes from that. The idea that no one in the magical community trusts Draco after the final battle and he fears for his life, and Harry is the only one not to fear him because Draco owes him. And Draco trusts Harry won't kill him because, well, he's Harry, and also he saved his life once, he isn't about to murder him. One of my favourite post Hogwarts dynamics! ^^

I like Darry because I honestly think there is more evidence for them than Harry and Ginny. I never considered Draco an enemy, only a rival. Under the right circumstances, they would have be friends. And don't consider Draco a bully because for the most part Harry and Draco are evenly matched. (Draco is a bully to Neville). But the only reason Harry ever comes out on top is because of Hermione or Ron. There is enough interaction between Draco and Harry for gay subtext. And from a narrative point, it would makes sense if they did get together. Harry disliked Draco because on some level he had feelings for him and vice versa. (But I prefer Harmony).
And I totally the hate the way everyone treats Slytherin house. Most of the problems in the series stems from how people judge each other based on the house they are in.

I'm a huge shipper of Drarry. I never really liked how Ron spoke about slytherins, and not just because that's my house. but because he's judging without knowing them. And yes Draco is abit of a... bully... but if u think about it, he was raised to believe things by his father and it doesn't help that his father worked for Voldemort. They both have much in common, you just have to look beyond what u see/read and go deeper into the character. But ofcourse this is only my opinion.

I think the appeal of many ships that involve bullying is that you can play around with the motives quite a bit. Sure, you can think of it as plain, old dislike, but there's also a lot of other reasons you'd try to get someone's attention in this very clumsy way. I can think of 3 really insistent bullies from way back, who made my schoolyears pretty fucking nightmarish, and as it turned out, at least 2 of them had a crush on me. Pulling pigtails, anyone?

Although I don't ship Drarry, I get kinda upset when JK is like "I don't like Draco" I feel like it's a shallow move to create a character who is nothing more than a bully and a chance to add more conflict to the plot. I feel like there's this brilliance to Draco where it's all he may be mean but there's a big chance he was abused as a child just like Harry. I think everybody looks at Draco like he's such a big bully and mean and didn't deserve to survive, but Draco might have had a worse life than Harry. I mean if you think about it Harry gets out of the Dursly's home and gets to come to the lovely Weasly house. He's well liked and has a many friends and admirers. He's in the most liked house and he has Dumbledore on his side. Draco however probably grew up in a cold household where his father was cruel and his mum comes from one of the darkest wizarding families ever. He doesn't get to choose if he's good or bad. He has this choice forced upon him. He also probably doesnm't like Harry cause he caused great shame to his family. Also Draco doesn't have a Weasly home to go to and he doesn't have warm friends or teachers on his side. He is forced to kill Dumbledore which he doesn't in the end but you could tell how torn he was. He isn't evil. He's probably just hurt.

I'm pretty sure this paring was popular even BEFORE the 6th book and that the 6th book had confirmed to many that the paring was somewhat canon.
Drarry is taking over my life. I mean Draco has a great redemption arc and by the end of the series I couldn't help but ship them.
I really want to do a complete reimagining of all 7 books but with Harry sorted into Slytherin where he actually becomes really close friends with Draco. Perhaps then Draco would actually see more development from what might be a (not-so) friendly rivalry with Harry (who might still be really good friends with Ron and Hermionie) to a 4th member of the main cast. And when they reach the climax of each year, it would be nice to see more of Draco's involvement in them such as: Draco helping with the puzzles to reach the philosopher's stone, Draco helping to find the chamber of secrets and so forth. I know this would completely turn around some books like Prisoner of Azkaban and Half Blood Prince, but it's an interesting thought especially with what the relationship (romantically or platonically) between him and Harry would have turned into.
That being said, I also like to theorise what would happen if Draco was sorted into Gryffindor with Harry and the effects of that with his family and his development in attitude.
My favourite moments were probably when Harry didn't leave Draco to burn to death, the fact that Draco didn't identify Harry (which probably saved him from Voldemort killing him and/or his friends), and all those little things that Harry noticed about Draco in Half Blood Prince (an example being the fact that he saw Draco looked extremely unhealthy, much like Tonks at the time.) My least favourite moments were when Harry turned down Draco's offer of friendship and when Draco paralyzed Harry and broke his nose.

I have many favorite Drarry moments, as any Drarry shipper does. There is of course the rescue from the fire, and the lie that Draco does not recognize Harry in order to protect him, both in the Deathly Hallows. However, I also love the fight scene in the Half Blood Prince, despite how much hate it gets. Draco started the fight because he was scared; he was a Malfoy, highly esteemed, and he'd just been caught crying by the one who was supposed to be his enemy. Harry fought back, of course, because who wouldn't? Also among my favorites is the deleted scene from the Deathly Hallows in which Draco abandons the dark side the moment Harry reveals that he is alive, and goes bolting back to the light side. That scene was ultimately what made me a die-hard Drarry fan. Draco believed so much in Harry, put so much faith in him, enough to flee from the person he fears the most, leaving his parents behind, and if I recall correctly, he even threw Harry his wand at some point(?). I don't have any least favorite scenes. To me, all Drarry scenes are amazing.
What if when Draco was being sorted the hat mentioned another house but he asked to be in Slytherin so he would disappoint his father?
Draco has all the Slytherin traits and most people in his family are in fact in Slytherin. Also The hat barely touched Malfoy's head. Good idea though :)

I ship drarry and i have been bullied in the past too. When i see (or read it) Harry and Draco attack each other i see it as angry to the outside world and that they feel safe to take out on the other. Also jeasouly plays in thie hatred as well. Since neither one knows the other that well they both wish to be the other. Draco wants others to look up to him and see him as good and not just his family name, as Harry desire a family and to be recongized in that way and not just by the "boy who lived". To me their relationship has many different layers and very cool to see them. I also dont mind Draco and Hermoine or Harry and Hermoine (although i do feel bad for Ron in both cases ). However, the Harry and Ginny relationship seems force to me.

Yeah. Rowling said Ron and Hermione may not last, but I always felt that applied more to Harry and Ginny. A marriage built on a childhood infatuation and feeling’s developed during a time of extreme stress don’t seem like a lasting bond.
I love your observation of their confidence vs bravery contradiction. I'd never thought it out in that exact way before and it's super poetic! I can tell you, maybe my favourite (and I've read a LOT) Drarry fanfictions are the Friend Like Me/Friend Like You pair. The first is in Draco's perspective. I believe Harry asks Draco what things would be like if he'd accepted Draco's friendship before sorting in first year. The reader is launched into an elaborate fantasy taking place in the course of the novels, but with Harry in Slytherin, and as Draco's best friend. In the sequel, made by a fan of the first, we go through the same events in Harry's perspective, the narrative change being legillimacy (spelling, I have no idea) with the attempt prompted by intent to snoop into reasons for Draco's Suspicious behavior. They also continue the narrative past where the original work left off, creating a happy ending (give or take) epilogue (presumably as a fix it to all of our decimated emotions thxxxxxxx). They're seriously very very good and I recommend them.
Hmm well I been bullied many times as a child. but as I got older and grew up with harry potter series I soon realized that Mafoy was a boy in pain and needed comfort and friends. but harry hated him and let's not forget Mafoy has done damage to Harry and all of his friends before in the past but maybe they could have been friends if at least given the chance

In the book (because the movies don't show any of my favorite parts >:c) It says that when Draco is on the broomstick with Harry, Draco is holding on so tightly to Harry that it hurts. I personally am not a Drarry shipper. At least, not in the romantic sense. In general I guess I just have a hard time getting into male slash pairings (femslash on the other hand...). Even when I do support them, I tend to be passive and less passionate about it. I do think the idea of a friendship between Harry and Malfoy is compelling so I understand it. I really love your videos, you cover such a broad range of topics even when doing specific pairings that I'm not into. I like how you discuss a couple or trope, how it is engendered by the context of the source material or used in fiction, then relate that back to wider themes, such as the role of the author/creator, what it canon, why or why not certain tropes or shippings are popular and what that says about the fandom culture. Keep up the good work. :) Maybe I'll see some pairings I support eventually.

I agree with this video and I thank you for Making one. but let me make some things clear.
1) Draco punching harry on his face with his feet: you yourself explained the reasons pretty clearly. Draco was over burdened with all the family force. Draco thought it would be nice to be a death eater but he later came to know he wasn't. Moreover did you see his face while he punched harry? It was more like "Don't you understand? I have to hate you! Please let me!" than "I hate you so freaking much harry"

2) Sectumsempra Curse: Harry found this curse in the Half Blood Prince's book. it was written "For Enemies" but we all know that he didn't have a single clue what that spell did. Even hermione didnt know. Harry was always curious to try out that spell. He even decided to do it on Ron but as it had written for enemies he didnt take his decision further. Harry was more that curious to try that spell. So when he found a chance he did it on Draco. But if he had known what that spell would do, he obviously wont try that. And then we all know what happened next (WHOEVER READ THE BOOK KNOWS PRETTY MORE)

Harry refused. and then that's when the teasing began. look at it this way: if Harry would be a girl Draco would pull on his pigtails, would poke him in the ribs and would lift his shirt. but harry is a boy, so, Draco copes with this feelings in a different way. he follows harry around to blackmail him somehow, he always starts a fight and he is mean to harry's friends to rise a reaction out of him. If that isn't love or at least liking, i don't know what else is"
