- The armored dinosaurs are probably one of the least understood of the great dinosaur groups. This doesn’t mean there aren’t experts out there discovering all sorts of wildly important data that helps clear up the mess, but these animals are often side-lined for the bigger and SEO-certified monstrous theropods and ginormous sauropods. At this point both of the major lineages - the stegosaurs and ankylosaurs - are full of a good lineup of critters from most of the world and the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. However, there are some big blind spots.

Reminds me of all the incredibly outdated books I had as a kid. Am I the only one a little bit sad that all that old paleomedia was wrong? It seemed like a relaxed, slow, peaceful world filled with foolish beasts and swamps.
Yet still majestic.

I always like seeing new discoveries about Stegosaurs! For being such a popular dinosaur it's hard to find new info about it!
If thyreosaurus’ plates were flat like in Joschua’s reconstruction, then maybe if they had a courtship dance that involved leaning forward and down or turning their back to potential mates and then (temporarily) rearing up. I think this because the way that thyreosaurus’ plates were positioned makes it so that these movements display as much of the plates as possible. I also believe that flat plate could also have been used for communication that isn’t for mating dances but using the plates this way is harder than with typical stegosaur plates so I think it’s perfectly plausible (warning: HEAVY speculation) that thyreosaurus’ plates had a keratin sheath that was structured to be iridescent make up for the awkward angle of the plates. This could go for other stegosaurus but I believe that their upright plate are tall enough to not require iridescence for low-reward interactions (such as telling another stegosaur that they snore too loudly).
That specific bit of royalty-free music at 2:25 takes me right back to the Vehicle Assembly Building in Kerbal Space Program.

Aw yeah, EDGE is back and he brought a weird stegosaur! Great overview, especially the paleoart gallery with all the different armor interpretations. I'd love to see more videos on stegosaurs; they're one of my favorite dinosaur groups but kind of underrepresented on YT. Maybe revive that series about dinosaur appearance changing over time, and do an entry on Stegosaurus?

You know, talking about all these new southern armored dinosaurs reminds me of the time paleontologists thought that the sauropods were strictly a northern hemisphere group of dinosaurs as well after they mostly disappeared after the end of the Jurassic. But now we know that sauropods were everywhere and the largest were from the south. Seems like history is repeating itself.
I may be wrong, though, but it's just something I sort of noticed
I mean, stranger things have happened at sea. And in evolutionarily short time periods too.
It'd be cool to see a transitional species between stegosaurs and anylosaurs.
Both of those groups emerged from early thyrepphorans like scelidosaurus. So, though there would be transitional forms between scelidosaur-like and stegosaur or ankylosaur-like forms, there wouldn't be any that showed stegosaurs evolving into ankylosaurs. In fact, nodosaurs were around when stegosaurus was.

Of all the spiked dinosaurs, which had spikes that were the most intimidating where even the fiercest of predators would avoid? It seems like all of those pictured here had weaknesses in the armor, like exposed sides and the dinosaurs with spike tails, were they really effective in battle?

Amazing, since this Stegosaur is a much more advanced Stegosaur, I wonder what other adaptions Thyreophorans got throught their evolution. I personally still remain skeptical on this hot topic of debate. Thyreosaurus may have had plates, but at the same time, the specimen doesn't show too much evidence for this. Looking at their anatomy is very effective, but if we look at their evolution, the answer can vary. Those are just my personal thoughts and opinions.

They actually found a rock mummy of a I believe ankylosaur (probably spelt wrong) so we have a fully preserved almost sculpture looking dino.. it was found in sea sediment so the theory is it washed out to sea! :D!! I will provide an article if wished but Lindsey Nicole also made a nice video on it! (Edit as I belive I’ve said the name right 😅)

Technically correct, but it's often lumped into all of africa when it comes to ancient biodiversity. It was much closer to the equator during the Cretaceous.
