As an shipyard apprentice in the 1960s, I had to work in a small squad of engine fitters preparing the engine room floor prior to the installation of the engine bed plate ( the bottom and sump of the engine). The engine itself would be 80ft long, 20ft wide, 35ft high (24m x 6m x 11m), so we had a large area of steel to grind. The old hands all found sacking and cardboard to kneel on and told me to do the same. I dismissed their advice and worked quite happily all day. Got out of bed next morning couldn’t walk, both knees massively swollen. Off work a few days. Learned my lesson or did i? At 70 year old it was only in last 10 years I began to use the flat rectangular kneeling pads that are readily available anywhere. Many of the knee protectors are very inconvenient to use, don’t stay in place and hurt the backs of your legs. The trouser insert pads are much better. But it’s too late for me now. Kneeling is always painful now and rather than kneel constantly I have to keep changing position and posture. Whatever I do, getting up off my knees is painful and I’m glad if there’s something I can push on or grip to help me get up My message to young men who feel invincible and think they don’t need protective gear is simple : don’t kid yourself, look after your body, it’s the only one you’ll get, life is not a rehearsal, never ever think it’s not cool or it’s not masculine to wear protection. I’ve had the pleasure of a splinter of brass in my eye that couldn’t be removed magnetically, a sliver of ceramic tile removed from my eye after a 25 mile drive to my nearest hospital because I didn’t wear goggles when I pulled the tiles off the wall; never thought I needed to wear ear defenders in the shipyard and in engine rooms at sea or when using power tools so now I have the pleasure of tinnitus and cannot hear high pitched sounds like bird song. Fumes, toxins, hazardous, carcinogenic substances can all contribute to severe disabilities and suffering later in life. We use to joke, “never worry about old age, it doesn’t last long,” it’s only funny until day in day out you suffer irreversible pain and disability when even a week is a long time. You see all these old decrepit men with walking sticks and frames, electric wheel chairs or gasping for breath, many of them were once young, strong, healthy lads who neglected their bodies. And as for sticking dried leaves in your gob, setting fire to them then breathing in the fumes for pleasure that’s as sad as it gets. Life and health are the most valuable possessions you will ever own, treasure and protect your body what ever else you do. At my age I’ve seen a lot of lads die prematurely and seen many more suffering terribly because of occupational hazards they never protected themselves from .The benefits system may help you financially with disability but can do nothing to alleviate suffering. Sorry about the long comment. Thank a to Roger for addressing the issue
Once upon a time we all thought we were indestructible and thought the old guys were talking shyte only to discover 40 years later life choices are a cnt and we never make the right ones! I probably crawled more than i walked these last 50 years and only started wearing the in trouser knee pads in the past 10 years or so a bit! too late.
didn't wear knee pads until the end of my career as a Carpenter and Joiner ..DO'H! paying for it now . Had to retire from the construction Game due to wrecked knees ..i'm 54 years old and now require full knee replacements ..Surgeon doesn't want to do this to me yet as he feels I'm still too young ...going for a new procedure in November to try and at least give me a little more time until the inevitable full replacement ....wish i had worn pads earlier in my career ......i now walk like i have crapped my pants most of the time ......and don't get me started on getting out of bed first thing in the Morning ...o'h well
A while back i worked on many auditorium seating installation jobs. Floor drilling, kneeling and fixing steel framing all risked strain and impacts. Just kneeling on a screw on the floor can be bad enough! My colleague, with many, many more years at it than me, had rarely worn knee pads, and was definitely suffering more and more as a result. I wear them when doing any job that may require it and I recommend them - also the shell-type pads provide extra protection when upright too.....
Too late for me to avoid damage at 65, but I love the feeling of my screwfix kneeling pad under my dodgy knees…p.s it’s easy to get down, but hard to get up.
Was doing a Cricket Clubhouse extension a few months back where 5 tons of screed were being laid on Concrete/DPM/Cellotex to create a Bonded Floor. Colleague 25 years my junior, did the screeding whilst I started wheelbarrowing the 5 tons of screed across 100 metres of grassland. After about an hour screeding he asked if he could borrow my Fento Knee Pads. I couldn't believe it, he was wearing flimsy black trousers with big holes in the knee undersides and was wondering why his knees were starting to "burn". Suffice to say he wasn't in for 3 or 4 days whilst the blister/burns on his knees began to heal. Would also be interesting to interview some experienced Carpet fitters regarding the state of their knees, as one fitting a carpet at my house was banging the hell out of a Carpet Stretcher Knee Kicker 😨
Someone asked me the other day which trade has it the worst. I told them you can't really win. Groundworkers get bad backs, plumbers get bad necks, plasterers get bad shoulders, sparks get bad forearms, tilers bad knees, brickie's bad thumbs and the list goes on. You do enough of any one thing and chances are something is being overused. My best advice to anyone I meet in such a situation is to start to vary your work a little "Before" things start to hurt, not after. (Work on the NHS)
@@rockymount2393 Exactly, once you hit your 40's and have a little wear and tear it's a great way to stir things up. Maybe I should invent a Jig so they can slide under sinks like a car mechanic - keep an eye out on the Dragon's Den.
guy who i started plumbing with, full time firefighter and gas engineer on the side, told me to get knee pads and told me to listen to his knees. they genuinely creak like old stairs! he's had 75% of a tendon shaved off because of the damage from kneeling. safe to say knee pads are a daily wear for me
Recently finished a bathroom job, the floor tiling was the final straw, the pain was just too much but I had a couple of days off so all good. That night the phone goes, £200 for an easy flooring job on Saturday. It's Thursday and I nearly turned it down because of my knees. Toolstation, £47 for the Tough Built stabilizer knee pads. So I can face Saturday and I will still be £153 up. Wasn't looking forward to another day on my knees but the difference was night and day. I am not a fool, I wear the foam inserts that go in my trousers and have a piece of foam to kneel on but the stabilizers really work for me. Since then I have sanded an oak floor throughout a one bedroom flat and just love my new additions. I am sure they are all good but I like the stabilizers because you can use them without the straps for just a quick job as the sit where you put them. Don't think about it, just buy them, as an added bonus I don't have to put up the foam pads that keep falling out of my trousers!
i bought some work trousers with the knee pockets, cut up some foam underlay to put inside and it's been wonderful for the few times i've had to kneel down fiddling with cars it's been more a case of laying on my back on a cold concrete floor so some sort of barrier has always been a welcome addition, not just for comfort, but to insulate against the cold
knee pads, kneeling mats definitely a good idea. I use them in conjunction being very careful about how i get down and up from the floor. Not allowing my knees to bang down onto the ground, but carefully lowered instead. i'm a middle aged guy with good knees and a good back, I do basic yoga and pilates which helps with my overall agility.
It can happen to anyone. I'm not trade but like watching this channel. Been in IT for years. Now 46, stayed in college for years so in the 90s, while in college I got a job at Waitrose. Did that for about 7 years but only 2 days a week (relevant). Was on the evening shift stacking shelves. Cereals was my thing :) the women always used the knee pad I only remember one guy using the knee pad down the non-food aisle but don't remember seeing many guys using them. Anyway. I was in my 20s, thought I was cool and fit enough that "I don't need any knee pads" I specifically remember a couple of the women telling me to use one "You'll regret it". I used to have a big box of cereals on my shoulder that would then be skillfully dropped so would land flat, not damage the box then I'd drop to my knees to put them out, obviously while the store was closed. Every Friday and Saturday night till 12am. I eventually left and in my 30s started struggling when I'd get up from crouching down. Now think they are shot. Not totally ruined but def think I may need new knees. Its an arse and painful to get up. When I do any DIY now I always put on the Delwalt trousers with the foam insert knee pads. Can't work without them, feels so much better when using them. Wear knee pads or you'll the regret it. Find ones that are comfortable. I don't do much DIY, basic stuff but when on knees tried the strap on pads that were just super annoying, come loose and not that comfortable. Best found so far are the foam inserts for the DeWalt trousers.
really happy with my D30 Snickers knee pads i bought about 3 week ago. after watching the video roger did a while back. couldn't find the exact ones like in the video, but maybe they've changed the design now. but they are AMAZING guys! super comfortable, like you expect from snickers, and i tell you what... you can drop down to your knees at speed onto the hardest of surfaces, and they completely absorb the blow, and i`m 19 st! so, yeah.. id be interested to try out the tough built ones, but maybe they aren't as comfortable as they seem , as they are a bit big.... that`s the reason why i wanted the ones that fit inside my pants. ones that fit inside the trouser are much easier to forget that they`re there, and therefore will get used more often. ones you need to take off to drive a van for instance are probably going to get lost in the back of the van , for me anyway.
remember the old screeders used to cut an old car tyre for knee pads , trouble is when we needed safety stuff in the 70/s it wasnt there and now we feel it ! who remembers a big bag of dust slung on the shouder,no problem at 18 try it at 62 and compare that to some bird who got compensated for repetative strain for typing
I'm a physio by trade, I work in the NHS but always wanted a job in construction.. Funnily enough I barely see any active trades people in my day to day work. It's 95% desk based people or those who are unemployed that need help. In a trades job you're more active and therefore you're protecting yourself against injuries in future (to some extent). Wear and tear is generally now more associated with lifestyle factors like smoking, weight, alcohol consumption, over repetitive use as the body does very well at adapting. I would still say comfort should be priority and invest in knee pads to make life easier.
Most all the guys on construction sites where I am in the US are not against knee pads etc. Most of us don't want to hurt anymore than we have to. Just look at the roofers that use a large thick piece of foam to kneel on to protect their knees and from the hot roof and it helps keep them from sliding off the roof. No fancy pad that you buy just a big chunk of foam.
Tilers are always affected by Knee problems and among the community Fento Knee pads are well sought after no discomfort and they are strapped below the knee to your calf so you dont feel a thing, i love mine
ive been wearing snickers floor layer trousers for about the last 10 or so years. the bean bag knee pads are great. no chance of forgetting them either. get the trousers at either screwfix or toolstation. cheaper than anywhere else ive found.
I started wearing the toughbuilt protectors over a year ago and wish I had sooner. I'm 42 and have arthritis in my knees, diagnosed through an MRI scan.
Yes, in My earlier years as a Plasterer/Screeder I didn't get on with Knee Protection. Infact I'm not even sure they were available back then. Other screeders would use folded up newspapers, bits of board, sofa cushions etc. But after a few years the old knees would BURN! driving to work or climbing stairs, to the point where I could hardly walk. Then about 30 years ago, a friend who was a Chippie turned Site-Agent, local Swimming coach, fit-as-a-fiddle, knelt on a nail, got Sepsis, Died within just a few days 😞 .... It only takes a minute to change 'your life' and those around you - for GOOD! .... Even though they're a DANG Nuicance! to wear.
I was one of them that said I don't need them. I now have had Knee replacement Hip Replacement and need other side doing. I should still be out grafting and enjoying life. I struggle to walk and if I had my time over I would do things different. I think they should bee like eye protection and ears. But I had a good time
Damn right! But, however good the knee protection, after 8 hours straight, it's gonna hurt. I always wear them and they're good but it still aches. I try to limit my time on my knees nowadays.
@UCBddMCrCnJfSrAbk90rGJsg each to there own opinions man. Tradesmen in particular work on their knees daily. Would it kill to enforce mandatory knee pads? No. The positive side is, less hassle on the health services, less suffering down the road, more awareness to ones wellbeing etc. Yes, the negatives are the majority of the knee pads on the market are rubbish, uncomfortable etc. But sure most work trousers come with pockets for pads to slip into.
Well for starters at least you're using some kind of protection when you're on your knees which is better than none. It's making it a habit that's the most important thing. :)

wore my knees out from years of pushbike riding as both my hobby and then my career (pushbike courier) but now I can barely walk some days without knee braces to take the strain off my knees. for someone in my fourties I should not be finding simple things so difficult.
Unfortunately its either not taking on board a bit of well meaning advice or not having the money for safety gear (the most comfortable) that has led to my body being shot to bits. Lifting rolls of lead up treble ladders, roofing with a "rope" round my waist, floor tiling, lifting way ahead of whats advised nowadays the list goes on but whilst I could do it I'd get on with it, nowadays it's through gritted teeth and stubbornness that gets me through.
Weird timing, I was on my hands and knees grouting a patio the other day thinking what TF am I doing. I have the trouser inserts but very hot in summer. Generally use a foam kneeing pad. Luckily it's not a common thing for me.
My grandad had new knee’s not a good thing to have. He was a plumber his advice was don’t be a plumber 🤣but I use a kneeling pad I find them better to use
Lads please please wear knee pads its vital iam living in a world of pain , new knees , 62 on the scrap heap a propper old boy , stick and all . GET THOSE PADS IN THOSE SNIKKERS BOYS
No one pair of knees is the same as another, so the problem comes that you need to find the knee pads that fit you for comfort and wearability. With so many pads on the market you could spend a fortune trying to find the right ones and wearing the wrong ones can be as bad as not wearing any! You should be able to pay full price for a pre used pair of pads wear them for a week if there the ones take them back and exchange them for a new pair, then they get to be used again. If there not right you try a different style, the seller has the security that you've paid full price for pre used pads so if you don't return them in a week you've brought them and they lose nothing.
We really need to start squatting a lot more in the West (not that type of squatting). The Asians have got it right in that respect, it's a great position that you can sit in for hours and is generally good for mobility. Even if half the low down jobs could be done in squat position it would take a good load off the knees.
Hi Chick,Yep I've got wide feet with a high instep and wear the Stanley Orion Safety Trainers in the summer months (15% off at Toolstation at the mo). They're so comfortable you don't even realise you're wearing Steel Toecap's. In the colder winter months i wear V12's VR601 Bison Safety Boots as they have Composite Toecaps & Midsole (which tend to keep my toes/feet warmer for longer 😃). Hope that helps.
I have always worn knee protection specifically snickers knee pads that go inside the knee pocket on ur work trousers and u never even notice they r there and I’ve had the same pair for 6 years and they r still great. I decided to upgrade to the toughbuilt knee pads cuz of the previous video u made and what a waste of £50 the thigh strap is so uncomfortable it’s in Torah and has rubbed my skin raw, and is constantly slipping and sliding down my leg Don’t buy
Why if your job involves kneeling which a lot of jobs do, why would you not wear knee pads? If your job doesn’t and you have to get on your knees for some reason as you do, then clear the debris away if any and be careful. You only need the tiniest stone to be uncomfortable. We have all been there.
Ask an apprentice if you need knee pads they will say my knees are fine. Ask and 40-50 year old and they will tell you all the ways their knees hurt. We are injured, hurt and sacrificing to teach that lesson. Wear the damned knee pads and safety gear.

Roger..i was expectictin te see ian botham before the end of this clip😅😅👍
I was one of them that said I don't need them. I now have had Knee replacement Hip Replacement and need other side doing. I should still be out grafting and enjoying life.
I struggle to walk and if I had my time over I would do things different. I think they should bee like eye protection and ears. But I had a good time
Hi there. We'd like to speak to you about your story as part of our #KneelSmartKneelSafe campaign. Please email us at marketing-uk@toughbuilt.com.
As a mechanic for most of my life I wish I had looked after my knees when I was younger
Thank you for making this!
Damn right!
But, however good the knee protection, after 8 hours straight, it's gonna hurt. I always wear them and they're good but it still aches. I try to limit my time on my knees nowadays.
I've 36 and been doing electrics since school. Keep my knee pads in my work trousers on daily bases
Yes Roger, but what about heat pumps ?
Never been able to kneel, even as a kid - boney knees. Not a pro but when I have to kneel to do DIY I always use a thick cushion.
Firm believer that knee pads should be mandatory PPE in the workplace.
I use a foam kneeling pad from Screwfix. Is this good enough to prevent me from getting knee issues in the future?
Well for starters at least you're using some kind of protection when you're on your knees which is better than none. It's making it a habit that's the most important thing. :)
⚠️People knee-d to be made aware of the dangers and educated for their own health & safety. Some should to go to U-knee-versity! However some forgot what they learnt as they have a case of am-knee-sia!😩
Brilliant work!

Like an 80s safety adverts :)
wore my knees out from years of pushbike riding as both my hobby and then my career (pushbike courier) but now I can barely walk some days without knee braces to take the strain off my knees. for someone in my fourties I should not be finding simple things so difficult.
2:03 I recreated putting a knee through a nail (in my mind) what a sight! Must have been an experience!
A nail through a knee is the traditional method
I used to wear knee pads but they were just a hindrance, uncomfortable etc. now it seems there are some better ones I might invest.
I always use an off-cut of celotex… my mate always used pads and he got varicose veins…from the pads, I don’t know, but he said they didn’t help
After nearly 35 years of kneeling as an electrical engineer my right knee bad, i wish I'd have worn knee protection from the start.

Bit like hard hats! Never worn one and never will! Just get in the way.
Some people are so arrogant thinking time will never come for them
I think it is human nature not arrogance. If somebody showed you your eighty year old self when you were twenty you would lose the will to live
@@Butters-is2bw it's also fairly arrogant to judge people judging people on the internet...
Could be, however we are one of the few animals that can conceptualise time.
We really need to start squatting a lot more in the West (not that type of squatting). The Asians have got it right in that respect, it's a great position that you can sit in for hours and is generally good for mobility. Even if half the low down jobs could be done in squat position it would take a good load off the knees.
I've been wearing snicker knee pads everyday for 20 years.
you need to strengthen them. check 5he knees over toes guy
Any tips for wearing steel toecaps that squash the little toes under the other one?maybe i've just got big flat feet, but lord it can get painfull.
@@rockymount2393 Cheers will try them out
I have always worn knee protection specifically snickers knee pads that go inside the knee pocket on ur work trousers and u never even notice they r there and I’ve had the same pair for 6 years and they r still great.
I decided to upgrade to the toughbuilt knee pads cuz of the previous video u made and what a waste of £50 the thigh strap is so uncomfortable it’s in Torah and has rubbed my skin raw, and is constantly slipping and sliding down my leg
Don’t buy
Stick some suncream on while you're at it ;)
Why if your job involves kneeling which a lot of jobs do, why would you not wear knee pads? If your job doesn’t and you have to get on your knees for some reason as you do, then clear the debris away if any and be careful. You only need the tiniest stone to be uncomfortable. We have all been there.
Ask an apprentice if you need knee pads they will say my knees are fine. Ask and 40-50 year old and they will tell you all the ways their knees hurt. We are injured, hurt and sacrificing to teach that lesson. Wear the damned knee pads and safety gear.
I ve been saying on linked in it should be mandatory on sites as part of the ppe for ground workers as well.
How are other peoples knees any of your concern? If somebody wants to destroy their knees that’s their own choice.

Go on a carnivore diet, you'll never have another single day of joint pain in your life, no matter what your occupation!
There certainly seems to be growing evidence that a carnivore diet is the way to go. I've been following Shawn Baker for a while now and I've come to believe that everything we're told by the mainstream media and establishment are all lies. Literally just finished a steak for my dinner.
What a load of rubbish.
@@paulfrost8952 actually tried it have you paul? No, I thought not!
@@martinlouden9005 No I follow the omnivore diet as did are ancestors, as we all are. What ever fad one might follow we’re omnivores by design, though i have occasionally eaten an extremely heavy meat diet from time to time and found it clogs up the digestive system some what(must eat me greens), but does nothing for the knees.
