The second one has better gameplay and controls, is less glitchy and the collectables are better. But the first has the atmosphere. It has all of the atmosphere.
I disagree. I feel the gameplay in the first was extremely better than the second. The hand/gun models were not on their own Z plane, (like Call of Duty for example), so they actually moved and interacted with the world around them. This let you slide up to a corner or a wall or a pillar and be sneaky as only one of your guns slowly inched out from around the wall as you moved left or right, (or up from a crouching position). No games do this, ever, and it was such a subtle game mechanic that allowed you to do so much more than the normal shooter. :D
Gavin Niebel This is true. Starbreeze were great once. I remember the elation I felt when I heard they were doing Syndicate - a cyberpunk Starbreeze game! Butcher Bay and the Darkness in a rain-soaked, densely populated futuristic city to explore - crowded, smoky bars; greedy corporations; zany characters littering the streets... And then the game came out. Ugh. WHERE ARE YOU PREY 2 YOU FUCKING COCK TEASE?! Anyway, I always find the shotguns and the uzis in the first Darkness a total pain in the arse to use - I mostly just stick to the handguns - but I never have that problem in the second. And the Darkness abilities were utilised better in the second, although I do miss the Creeping Dark and the darklings. Overall, they are both damn fine, and utterly heavenly when played back to back, but, yeah, I do prefer the first due to the crushing atmosphere. Also I find the Great War purgatory more satisfying than the asylum. I could talk about these fucking games forever.
GeekVessel Yeah definitely. The Great War is one of the scariest moments in game history for me. Also, I think Starbreeze is getting back into the swing of things. Their game mechanics for Payday 2 are so excellent!
The gameplay in the second game is the same cringe as everything else. You don't feel the movement of the character, he moves like in Call of Duty. There are always some stupid numbers on the screen (+10, +20 etc), bullets for weapons appear inside the enemies (what?). There is some bullshit going on. Everything is colorful and silly. Darkness 2 completely destroyed all the aesthetics and atmosphere of the first game. The gameplay in the first game wasn't perfect, but that was part of the atmosphere too.
+Tleps Sdrawkcab Darkness is definietly not the best FPS game, but it had something that most games don't: atmosphere. Wandering in the underground metro, speaking with the people, hearing thouse sounds and noises... it just felt so real. Like an actual city.
+Radical Ed Agreed. I remember walking along the streets when some random NPC tried to mug me. I just activated The Darkness and... well, you know the rest. ;)
One of my favorites... I can't really tell the exact list, depends of my humor but this is in my top 3 for SURE -Perfect music -Epic story, not the original from the comics but this time line pack the spirit very well (without "superhero" actions, kinda better) -The ambiance yes, Goth/modern/durty with a fucking drama -And enjoyables ragdoll x]
So many memories with this masterpiece of a game. I remember my parents brought it to me for Christmas without knowing absolutely anything about it, got horrified by it and I naturally loved it. Among the very best scores in western games I've ever played and brings back such nostalgia that it's hard to put on words. We need a remaster.
one of the more chilling things about the whole story is that there's no refuge in the angelus. in fact, due to the fact the angelus assimilates the soul of its host with itself, one could argue the angelus is even worse than the darkness. either way, light brings no solace from destruction
basically yes, as we saw at the enf of the second game, the angelus took over Jenny's body, however, the darkness can be controlled, not like the angelus
Mike Patton was absolutely PHENOMENAL as the demon in this game.. I remember being completely chilled by it the first several times I heard. Can't wait for the second one!!!
XerasDezarrys though i wish i could do multi-executions and chain executions... well, hopefully darkness 3 is real and we will use that to make salami out of the angelus and sweet love with jenny.
Yes Remastered too , hope with some extra content too as well , knowing their track record it should be great . Maybe it will make way for a third game finally as well .
This needs to come to pc with more enemies and physics in the world, imagine destructible cloth physics on all enemies and curtains, and euphoria natural motion with physx smoke ! Jeeez!
@MrAtatatat4 Jenny was older than Jackie. Indicated by the statement "Congratulations, Ratface. You're finally legal." Secondly, Angelus doesn't follow the same rules that the Darkness does. Angelus chooses her own host body. There's no age limit involved. She wants a body she grabs it. however, she doesn't jump between bodies because when she first grabs a body it has difficulties controlling the powers.
Legit listen to this ost like every other day still, a remake of this would only be justified, it was a sleeper hit and deserves a RE2 style remake for a shot at goty.
Such delicate, obscured & ominous sense of doom resonates from this symphony of emotion. Truly worthy of any connoisseur of sensation's approval. These sounds resurrect, in such a violent way, the emotions felt in my darkest of days. In my opinion, damnation is the theme of this music, damnation as in the inevitable. Much like Jackie's latin tattoo across his neck defines: "Memento Mori" roughly translated, inevitable death.
I remember when i was 11 and first played this game for 5 years ago.. I almost cried because of the music and same time was scared because some places were really scary/creepy. I love this game. I have not else beaten it yet because im stuck on a place.
And I want the crawling demon head back so BADLY!!!!! :O That was definitely a hurtful loss for me in Part 2 :( Darkling was awesome, too, but I miss it nevertheless ...

The soundtrack to this game was so awesome! This track in particular gives me a Hellraiser kind of vibe, it sounds reminiscient of Christopher Young's Hellraiser theme.
The darkness games are amazing some of the best games ever made i hope that one day they make the darkness 3 and maybe expand the universe introducing the witchblade it wold be awesome.

@RedTyrant2 Angelus is the counterpart of the Darkness. She can create stuff from light instead of Darkness. I would like to see this game if the graphics had a bit more polish, the game ran at a smother framerate, and if you were able to perform more executions with your darkness powers such as slamming an impaled victim onto the ground with enough force that it shatters the pavement or have leftie and righty (the dark snake monsters on your shoulders) simultaneously rip off your victim's arms or just straight up rip them in half. or even spawn several demon arms from beneath structures to impale enemies from beneath. so much fun on its own and so much potential if it were modded correctly and polished enough to make it look even creepier than it already was. the mods and polishes probably wont happen but it cant hurt to dream. either way it is a fantastic game even to this day.
Ellis: Aw hell, this is just messed up! Hey Coach. Coach: Yeah? Ellis: Look right there, those what I think they are? Coach: *Gasp* OH SHIT! Ellis... looks like a cheeseburger apocalypse. Ellis: Oh, shit! *Cue the **1:41** part playing* Ellis: This is cool.

@@Kobalt_Rax_the_one No, a remake would make it completely different, the only change we need is better graphics, not a watered down game.

THIS GAME SERIES NEEDS TO BECOME A MOVIE
I would take an animated series with heavy gore instead
That would be epic if they add some horror elements
The main theme for this game had no right going this hard
Literally the entire OST went insanely hard tho
It did.
I'm a humble guy but this music makes me want to bring out a sinister side.
