I recently setup a colony of red galaxy fishbone shrimp that went from 25 to 200 in a small span of time. After 8 months, the shrimp tank crashed and only 2 shrimp were left. What happened, let’s discuss.
I’m curious to know, how often do you reset your caridina aquariums or replace the substrate. Do you monitor the pH of the water?
I wish everyone success in their planted shrimp keeping journey, thanks everyone for their support and listening to my rambles

Hi, my current 120L CRS (A-SSS) has roughly 200 shrimps in it and an extra thick layer of Stratum substrate I'm unhappy about (10cm at the front, about 15cm at the back) about 3 years old. The tank has an external canister filter. I've had a crash about a year and a half ago, in which I have failed to change the substrate but still somehow managed to set things straight. I'm right now cycling about 3 liters of Fluval Stratum soil in a bucket with a double sponge filter, when the cycle's finished I'll remove all the shrimps from the tank, remove the substrate and place about 1cm of the substrate using the cycled 3 liters. Hopefully that'd suffice as a reset.
Thanks for the comment and story. I wish you success also. With that said, fluval stratum is quite light for plants but for shrimp they should work but it doesn't lower the ph as low as I prefer. You've got this!!
@RWAquariumPages Thanks for the reply, I know that the ph that fluval brings to the table is a tad too high for Caridina. I keep CRS, and they do just fine with a ph of about 6 to 6.4 from my experience. I use the fluval essentially mostly as a buffering mechanism.
Hi, would mixing black and red pintos dilute the colors or just throw more black but still keep the patterns and color strong?
@Dmslide77 my friend does that and got both colours and the pattern was strong
@ thanks for the reply. Also, if I were to mix some boa culls with the red and black pintos would they throw some boas down the road? Or would the boa pattern dilute ?
I added a kh solution to my twenty gallon tank of red fancy tigers and it caused a massive die off of my shrimp . Now I only have a couple of them left 😢. Now I’m looking to change the tank to a neocaradina tank .
@@Wulfenite295 oh darn!!
Just curious, why were you adding kh solution to your tank?
@@Runescapian0wner thats a great question, as caridina shrimp like 0 to none kh in their water
I was adding some red neon blue rainbow fish to the tank and I saw that they liked some kh in the water. Huge mistake 😢
@@Wulfenite295 ah a community tank. It's ok, now you know
im about to start my first caridina. the tank size is 45*27*30 cm with thin layer about 1 kg of ADA ver 1 soil. according to my lfs and local breeder its enough for 1 year. i wonder if i should add more of the same soil or just use Jun Mastersoil...my intuition said just go for what works for these lfs and breeder..what are your opinion?
There are many ways to success for keeping caridina shrimp. Ada does exhaust after a while depending on the layer. Crystals are easier to keep than other caridinas
@@RWAquariumPages thanks
How was your black galaxy so far?
@@louisphung4399 that one is recovering quite well, thanks for asking, going to split it into a few tanks soon
Btw, I think your new colony of red galaxy have higher grade than before
Some have sf pattern too, is it?
@@louisphung4399 yep great eyes!!
