Dude, this video hits at the very core of my being. I love physical media so much that I have collected over 3,000 titles on Blu-ray and some TV series on DVD and some on Blu-ray during my lifetime. I consider it an investment.
I’m so glad that it did. I was hoping people like you who love physical media would find my video. It’s something that I’m so passionate about along with you and the others who have commented. I absolutely agree it is an investment. I’m so proud of the collection that I have created over the years and the fact that I can watch my favorite movies at any time. I love your profile picture. I mainly talk horror movies on my channel but I adore Star Wars!
1:47 Watched Dune on Netflix about a year ago, wanted to watch it again before going to see Part 2 in theaters and guess what? No longer on Netflix. That was the final straw that now has me collecting physical media again.
I absolutely understand your point. You’d think streaming services would be jumping at the opportunity to get movies like Dune on their apps with the sequel in theaters.
Another important thing to note about owning physical media is you do not have to worry about a company “ i’m looking at you, Disney” changing elements or outright removing elements from the film. George Lucas, bless his heart! is also very guilty of this. How many times has that mad Genius changed bits and pieces the original trilogy over the years? I love my despecialized editions of the original Star Wars trilogy, it’s just a shame that they were never officially released. and if studios try to kill off physical media, third-party physical media will rise in popularity in my humble belief. Us collectors are too passionate to just let physical media die. Whether the studio or a third-party seller gets our money for the disk is completely up to them🤷🏻♂️
I agree. I love the option of watching different cuts or editions of films. I wouldn’t want to be pigeonholed into watching just one specific cut. I think that would be the case. So many people are passionate about movies & physical media. The fans would take it upon themselves to keep it alive. I actually ordered something from a third party recently. No discs obviously but packing wise. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Something that I don’t think would be possible from a studio because of rights issues.
The 'taking away anything they want at anytime' is the reason I started buying DVD's again. Netflix 'decluttered' my comfortshow and that just made me realise that owning stuff sometimes can be a good thing. It probably cost me a small fortune to get all 7 seasons of that show but at least I have them now and can watch it whenever I want. 😊😊
We spend money on silly things so spending money on something that brings you joy & comfort is absolutely priceless in my book. I’ve bought multiple editions of my favorite movies and I’m so happy to watch them anytime I want!
@@ChrisBrockYT Yes, I'll admit minimalisme isn't always a good thing. I do have regrets now about getting rid of so many DVD's and CD's. Not all of them, but a few for sure.
CD, vinyl, DVD, Blu-ray, books, film cameras! Physical media is where its at. Netflix, Spotify and the other purveyors of rental ripoffs can get stuffed.
I agree. Although I do use Netflix & Spotify at times I’d much rather own things physically. I think it’s the freedom of knowing that no matter what happens you can always watch, listen or read your favorite things from your collection that nobody can take away.
With physical media its sometimes cheaper than streaming. I found 12 dvds of 1 game (its a cd actually lol), movies and 1 tv show season for really dirt cheap. One place was selling them for £1 every 5 dvds! What a steal
When I was a teenager I used to download songs on my old computer from music and archives websites back in the 2000s, before streaming came along. On my computer there were more than 5000 songs that I downloaded more than 10 and 20 years ago, some songs even dated back from the late 90s. Now I have copied all those songs on my notebook and edited some of them, fixing the metadata such as the title of the song, the album, putting the corresponding image, the year the album was released, the genre of the song, etc. Although they are not physical media, but files, they have the same functionality, since I can listen to my songs whenever I want, without being subscribed to a streaming service or being connected to the Internet, which makes me highly value all the songs that I downloaded in particular, and physical media in general. We have to keep physical media alive.
For shows ONLY available via streaming and will likely never have a physical release (eg. Granite Flats), I will sometimes do the equivalent of a"VCR" record of them by use of a capture card and and HDMI splitter. But I'd prefer to own most things. It's amazing how many TV shows are having episodes removed, content cut, and original music changed. I recently decided to order the Scrubs DVD series because at least 3 episodes have been pulled from streaming due to controversial issues and a massive amount of the original music has been changed due to licensing costs.
I used to own physical media years ago. Takes up to much space and most of it rarely gets re-watched. Now everything is on my own home server now, love it! Everything at my fingertips and i will always have it, no need for physical versions.
I really like the idea of home servers but I’m just partial to the packaging of physical media. I love looking at my collection and having it feel like my own personal movie store experience every time I pull a movie off the shelf. I haven’t tried it myself but the home server sounds like the perfect blend of physical media & streaming. You own and have the movies at your fingertips without taking up the space of a movie collection. I’m glad you commented this because I feel that a bunch of people would enjoy this option!
@@ChrisBrockYT I really liked it. I was a senior in high school and enjoyed the perk of getting to take movies home the Friday before the Tuesday releases so we could better recommend movies to renters.
No physical media isn’t dying it’s not such a mainstream market anymore!!! And a big box retailer pulling out of selling physical media doesn’t mean it dying as most physical media collectors get from the web ! Physical media will be around for years to come as studios want to make money to produce new content ! Disney goes to prove this ( old Disney ) “ we won’t release streaming shows “ looses a lot of money due to going woke “lets cash in and release streaming shows “
I live in a small town so I mostly do my physical media shopping online but with Best Buy pulling out of physical media I’ve noticed my local Wal Mart has stepping up their selection especially with their exclusive steelbooks. The nearest Best Buy from me was almost two hours away so with Wal Mart taking over it has only benefited me as a collector. I hate that physical media isn’t as mainstream anymore with streaming gaining popularity but they’d be crazy not to release movies & shows physically. Could you imagine how many things would vanish into the void and how much money they’d lose!
That may be true, but the problem is that the studios could assume that since fewer people are buying physical media, they won't put out as many titles. Look what happened with 3D - people were buying, but the studios just decided not to make them anymore. And the TV manufacturers decide not to put 3D in their TVs. They easily could have, but they decided not to let the consumer decide. The last bunch of 3D movies I bought were from overseas because studios decided not to sell them in the U.S. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.
To this day I regret literally throwing out my vhs collection one day when I was moving, even threw out the tv/vcr combo I had, no joke I kick myself every time! I am starting my vhs collection but man I had the Hollywood action classics on tape smfh 😫😫😫
That’s a bummer! It reminds me of something I regret, when I was younger I didn’t take care of my DVD collection like I should have and lost out on a lot of cool editions that would be worth decent money nowadays. Good news is it’s never too late to start collecting again, it might take a little bit but you’ll get your collection up and going again!
@@ChrisBrockYT yea thing I never did was get rid of my dvd collection or CDs, but I have a good 30 more or less of VHS tapes at the moment of mostly the classics and series like godfather and die hard 😎
The Reason i Still Buy Media Is Because Its Cheper To own the Ones You Love and Take A Chance on the Survise getting rid of it like how Spectacular spider-Man Was on disney + now its not
Yah -- Netflix would be great... if it actually had the movies I want... I don't expect all the new movies, but anything 25+ years old really shouldn't be the problem they have made it. So... it's off to Amazon/Ebay for the DVDs...
Along with the DVDs that I like is that over streaming is that with some of them like batman begins and spiderman 2 that they come with a mini comic and postcards etc.
The tide is turning, streaming will be now not as popular as when they started. It’s going back to leaving streaming and get back to dvd and classic games.
I think that would be for the better if it does end up happening. I don’t dislike streaming but owing something physically that you know won’t change or disappear is something I take great comfort in.
I like it!!.. some films on 4k or in HD destroys old CGI effects... old horrors like child play benefit from being on DVD it gives its Retro! gritty charm back! Also some Family guy episodes are banned now or have been toned down, but i still own the OG copys!.. lefties can run what i watch no more!
I agree that some movies benefit from lower quality because like you mention it covers up not so great special effects and the gritty quality definitely adds to the charm of some 70’s & 80’s movies imo! At the very least give us the choice between the unaltered stuff and the modified versions of movies & tv shows.
