  • This saved so many things I was about to throw away. Here's how to fix, clean, and repair virtually any battery corroded electronics safely and prevent the corrosion from happening again, forever...
Here are a list of devices and tools discussed in this video (all unsponsored):
    TruTemp Programmable Wired Thermometer: amzn.to/3O289mr
    Small, Bright LED flashlights: amzn.to/3RZeRdV
    Gray Plastic Tray: amzn.to/3Hpepkh

Good job on the repair. You do need to be careful when reversing the battery as some electronics are not reverse voltage tolerant.
When I want to store a device with batteries in a non-functional state, I insert a piece of cut paper between the batteries or the positive side of the holder. I typically will do this for my faucet automatic water timers.
Also please note that reversing (or disconnecting) the battery does not address alkaline cell leakage.

Allen, thanks for the feedback. I've reversed the batteries mostly on flashlights and they are typically rechargables but your cardboard or I use plastic disks too, just forgot to mention in the video.

As you mentioned, even when stored outside of devices, batteries may go bad. I always store cells outside of the devices. Thanks for the lesson.

By the way, a pencil eraser or a small nail file is also useful for refreshing the surfaces of battery contacts. This was a good video and with some really great tips. However, battery "salting" is due to a battery seal failure, that's often due to sub-standard manufacturing, the shelf life of alkaline batteries and is aggravated by improper storage of the battery. Replacing an alkaline batteries with a rechargeable battery will avoid the contact corrosion since rechargeable batteries use a different chemistry not prone to salting. Also, on some electronics with a "phantom power draw" a battery reversal may help prevent the unnecessary battery drain. Although, I'm not sure if it's actually better to block the circuit with a insulator of some kind, like a bit of plastic or as another commenter mentioned a piece of paper. The reason I say this, is that reversing the battery relies on internal circuitry to stop the flow of power, typically a diode. The diode has a peak inverse voltage or reverse voltage that when exceed the diode begins to breakdown. Which is why I believe battery reversal may not be a sound practice for long term storage.

Frank, thanks for the feedback. We have some Christmas ornaments and candles where we block the circuit with a bit of plastic. Thanks for the reminder, we too are shifting mostly to rechargable batteries.

Kirkland aa batteries are made by Duracell.

Well then, I guess I've going to shift completely over to rechargables...

If you have leakage from an alkaline battery, you should neutralise it with vinegar on a Q-tip

I wanted to love Kirkland batteries, but they break down way too quickly!

PLEASE DO Not refer to cotton buds (UK name) as "ear cleaners". The manufacturers even print a warning note on the packaging, NOT to put them into the ear as this is likely to push wax further in, rather than pull it out.

I like cotton buds, I'll use that term from here on out. Thanks.
