Like a mug is a good use of an old Scottish description of certain people... Sometimes we would also say, away ya mug ye....if you need this to be interpreted I'm sure Jodie will oblige assuming he is not in the process of buying just one more watch...😂
I served in the Israeli army in the 80's. We all wore cheap digital Casios, covered with broad nylon khaki straps, to protect the watch and block light reflections (which might be seen by the enemy). And we all bought these watches with our own money... so we couldn't afford G-Shocks, considering our 45 $ monthly salary. The Casios are still the best option for military activity, in my opinion. I really can't imagine any soldier wearing a steel mechanical watch during intensive field activities.
Some countries used them for a while during the cold war.
The fear was during a Nuke attack the magnetic pulse would kill all quartz watches while the mechanicals would keep running.
The Russians even shielded their watches to make them keep their accuracy after a nuke.
It's also why the Russians kept making tubes (And still do), comouter chips and transistors die while the Vacum Tubes keep going.
I would guess the US probably spent up big on shielding their needed electronics but that would not save the wrist watches.

I have a exactly same looking watch from the Chinese Brand Baltany with NH 35 Movement, got it for 120 Euros.
I wore an automatic Seiko when I was in the post Vietnam War 82d Airborne Division. It survived better than I did.
I had mine when I was in the Army back in the 70's/80's &90's, I almost cried when I had to hand it back on discharge!! The most reliable watch I have ever owned, not the best looking but, on operations it's not a fashion show.

The NATO straps from CWC, both their own & the Phoenix ones are amazing compared to the usual ones we see so definitely grab one if you can. Genuine military issue with heat welded hardware that feels so much better than stitching that looks amazing on vintage style watches 👍
Thank you, Jody, for reviewing this piece. I am a huge fan of seventies style watches, particularly tonneau cases. As for NATO straps, it helps to snip off the extra leg of fabric, to wear as a ZULU, as I do.

I suppose I struggle to see the question for which this watch is the answer, especially with those specs at that price (as your fellow countryman would say: "Ah'm oot!)" Wow, really impressed how big it looked at first glance. At least in my opinion it looked much larger before you compared it to the other watches. Then it suddenly shrunk in size. Really liked this one, both the watch and the video. Thank you Jody!
My first quality watch (the one that started my obsession) was and is the CWC G10 as it is known.Issued to the royal navy in 1982 and refurbished by Timefactors.Back in 1992 it cost me £54.00 and is quartz with a Tritium dial and is dimensionally the same as the Mr.X one.It's best feature is a battery hatch in the back for easy changes in the field.
I love that CWC have some history within the British Military. Be sure to check out the range of aftermarket products by CWC. I love how you can completely transform the look of the watch with their various regimental straps.
You can also add hand crafted Ensigns to the straps too. Plenty of mod options. I plan to incorporate some of my grandfather’s service medal ribbon into one of the straps, as well as some custom engraving.
Of all my watches, this is my favourite. Its versatility and strap options means it can suit all occasions.

Happy New Year Jodie, I am the proud owner of a CWC quartz W10 Military watch, failed to return it to stores when I left the Royal Navy. I used to use it for Astro Navigation. However, I also have 2 Octopus Kraken G10 & W10 watches with the NH35A movements both excellent timepieces, but yesterday I took delivery of the Tandorio Military timepiece with the PT5000 movement. It is fantastic, let down only by the Luminescence which is about as good as Pagani Design lume, abysmal. So looks like I'm going to have a love hate relationship with this timepiece. Keep up the good work my plum. JANBOY. RN. Rtd.

I love, and plan on owning (in the near future) some nice examples like the Marathon Navigator, a couple of Bertuccis, maybe, an MWC Mk III, and the Hamilton Khaki Field...
And I can TOTALLY see adding this authentic piece to the list!

Excellent little watches Jodie even if mine is a quartz movement. I was issued with one which I used for Astro Navigation whilst in the Royal Navy. Fixed lug bars. Unfortunately I "lost" mine prior to leaving the RN. Found it 10 minutes later and it's a beautiful. Plastic crystal though, scratch magnet. Keep it up my plum. Stay safe. JANBOY. RN. Rtd.

Thanks for the review! I like how you bring in outliers like this sometimes. Variety spicing up life, eh? This watch actually looked just right on your wrist. I would buy one for the nostalgia and the welded spring bars. For me, the spring bars are a bloody PIA. Every time I take them off or put them on, I shoot one or two into low earth orbit - SPROING!

They have a quartz version more affordable and for me is even nicer than this one, look up in the cwc website.
I have an original one of these somewhere in my house. I bought it 20-30 (?) years ago, loaned it to my son, and when he returned it I put it somewhere safe and I haven't seen it since. I loved the "pillow" case, no pun intended. A well hidden heartbreak! --Old Guy

I like it. A lot. I'm fond of any watch that is known for robustly performing the task it was designed to perform. The size doesn't put me off even though I have an 8 1/4" wrist. I happily wear my 1963. I just reckon the price is a bit steep.
So I'll happily leave that slot in my collection to my $30 Timex Weekender with its tic - tic - tic and indiglo.
I have an issued W10 from 1979 which still works well & keeps good time. However for my birthday this year I bought the Mellor 72. Looks exactly the same but it glows in the dark, something the Tritium on my old watch had stopped doing well! I'm very happy with it. I also have the CWC G10 Quartz - the later issue & the CWC Royal Navy "Pusser's" dive watch which I wear when the going gets much tougher than day-to-day wear.
Cool and simple, was looking at those models a while ago, there are some nice Pulsar versions also. Though I struggle to wear a watch as a daily beater without a date function
I remember at high school (back in the early 80's), one of my friends wore one that belonged to his dad. So when it came out, I bought the Hamilton Pilot Pioneer, and it's getting a huge amount of wrist time. The movement is plus 3 seconds per day accuracy and an 80 hour power reserve... For me the Hamilton's definitely the winner of the two - but that's the beauty of the hobby - there's something for everyone.
Yeah... that Hamilton is tempting. Great movement, great size. Just classy yet rugged.

Actually I’d already decided the Hamilton’s quality and design aesthetic was worth the premium for me.
Im a bit late to the game, and I'm sure no one will ever read this, but, here goes...i almost bought the Hamilton but the mineral crystal was a deal breaker, at that price no sapphire?! Much rather have acrylic than mineral...also the movement on the Hamilton has a strange regulator so apparently only Hamilton can regulate/service them, deal breaker #2...also actually prefer the more bear bones authentic look of the cwc...I want a rugged field watch, not a dress watch.

What an interesting watch. It looks beautifully made and I love those dimensions. Again, a review that I think is really on point. This is going to have a really specialist marketplace and I couldn’t see myself dropping £450 on it.

Mark Wilko - I still have my father’s hand-wound Timex that has ‘Made in Great Britain’ on the dial (and my mother’s Smiths has the same).
I've been wearing my dad's 36mm Hamilton from the 80s and I love it. I don't get the fixation with big bulky watches.

The new Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer you referenced is 36mm. They have been described on some sites as 33mm in error. It's size is perfect and I would recommend it over the CWC for it's brand and textured dial. Great little watch.

I have the Hamilton and it has become my favorite cheaper casual watch. I love the style, and between the super light weight, compact size, and the soft NATO I wear it on, it couldn't be more comfortable.
The CWC is pretty cool too.
I had guessed about 36mm at the start. There was something just a little odd about the dial that was putting me off though, and I figured it out from the lume shot. The hour hand gets fatter the further from the centre it goes. I can't say I've noticed that in a watch before, but then again, if there are similar styling cues in others, perhaps the rest of those dials were more balanced to mask the obvious fattening.

I immediately thought of the Hamilton Pioneer and I see it wasn't coincidental! This is a beautiful watch. I love the case shape and love the simple overall design. Would have loved to see 13-24 numbers on it. Maybe a date complication too, but then again I think that's easy to forgive on a watch of this type. Thanks Jody!

Fantastic! I love this early 70s mil-spec design. If I ever were to buy one, I would go for a dial with an “L” for luminova (which I Believe CWC also makes). For a super affordable option Pulsar makes a civilian version of their RAF quartz chronograph ref. nr. pm3129x1. Would be interested to see this watch in the metal as well. Stay safe!

I've just discovered this brand a couple of days ago. They got a good range of straps. So it was great to see a review of one of their pieces just after I discovered their rand! Also their popularity could increase due to the GENUINE Broad Arrow insignia that is about to be popularized by Daniel Craig's 007 No Time To Die Omega Seamaster 300M. CWC have a good range of pieces but they are not exactly cheap - but certainly way way cheaper than the aforementioned 007 Titanium Seamaster
Bought the look-a-like from ali this summer (the one in the latest 11.11.-best of video). In fact it lools almost exactly like this one (incl. the 'too small' crown). Hands are slightly different, no brand on the dial and no 'swiss made'. And it has regular springbars - got it for 130€ and I'm really happy with it.

Also as an owner of a Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer, I can safely say that the diameter size isn’t 33mm but in fact it’s 36mm. So it’s the same size of the mellor but what make it a better buy than the mellor would be the H50 movement which gives you a hefty 80 hour power reserve, a beautiful black textured dial, removable spring bars for variety, and although it also has mineral crystal to stay within the historic reference, it’s got AR coating which makes it a dream to look at under any light!. This is what made the Hamilton my choice when it came to these two. Hopefully I could see a Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer being reviewed on here in the near future! I simply am in love with this Hami and everything it stands for! Cheers!
Speaking of rivals, one very close rival is the Precista PRS-10. Basically same dial and hands, approx. same size, sapphire crystal, 10-year quartz movement, and iirc around £200 price.
For a watch with similar design and purpose, I think I'd go for a Bertucci A-2T. It is quartz, but quite a bit more watch for a lot less money.

Hey Jodi...hope Mr. X isn't too sensitive about losing his hair.. those British service guys are known to be on the tough side! Lol. Liked the video, sitting here in Nova Scotia wearing my Made for the Canadian military Marathon Navigator, Swiss Made high torque ETA Quartz movement, acrylic crystal , with Tritium Hands and markers. This was a watch issued to the Canadian military ( and I believe to US military during the Iraq conflict and Israel’s Special Forces.) Marathon is certainty a contender for someone looking for that “ genuine military look”. Bought mine from Mark at Long Island Watch, outstanding service and watch. Keep up the great videos. Cheers. ( P.S. Tommy?? I think we have half of Mr. X ‘S name..remember..Loose Lips Sink Ships! Lol!)

Imagine my surprise when it was about £450. Slightly disappointed. It honestly doesn't look it's worth, especially with those specs. In the side view, I can see where the lug holes were drilled through and covered.

I was considering one of these G10 style military watches in quartz (Precista PRS-10), as I didn't have a "grab and go" piece that is always useful. I liked the simple numerical index, the railroad track around the edge and the small size was appealing. But in the end, I felt it was BLAND. So I ended up getting a Farer Pendine, which has some of the spirit of these kinds of period British watches, a distinctive flair and an uncommon ETA split-second flyback chrono movement. I felt this gave me that proverbial bang for buck I was looking for in my (sole) quartz watch.
Great review, especially because you brought in options for comparison. Well done. But I must say, after seeing that Chinese alternative, I realized I'm not too keen on things from China at the moment.

You missed it's direct competitor, who also supplies to the military, the Marathon General Purpose watch would be it's closest competitor.
Probably its closest competitor is the original 70s watch, which has actual vintage charm and costs around the same and is readily available on ebay.
No, the closest competitor is exactly the watch which he said was it’s closest competitor, the Hamilton. As soon as I saw this watch I also independently decided the same thing. Literally nothing about the Marathon more closely physically resembles, or has closer specifications than the Hamilton.

Timor also recently put up a WWII "dirty dozen" re-issue w/ hand-wind & auto versions on Kickstarter for 650 pounds (appx 800 USD) at super early bird w/ a whopping 850 pounds (appx 1050 USD) for retail. I was tempted for a brief second until I saw the price tag. Will be interesting to see what these do on the secondary market but hard to imagine many paying the retail price when they can get the real thing on the vintage market serviced for just a bit more.

Dial design very similar to the Smith W10 British MOD designated field watch design of the late 60s. The W10 has been re-issued by Smiths Time Factor as the SMITHS MILITARY PRS-29A, cost of £405.00, 36cmm diameter, 11mm thick, 18mm lug width, 46.8mm lug to lug, round brushed stainless steel case. 10 atm, sapphire crystal anti-reflective. Anti-magnetic cage, screw back, shoulderless springbars with drilled lugs.
Doing the side by side with the SKX 13 and 007 was very helpful in getting a sense of the size, you should do that with all your watch reviews, the SKX is a great benchmark that everyone is familar with to gauge the size.

It’d be interesting to compare this one to watches with similar case shapes (Hamilton pilot, Seiko Turtle, etc) it’s interesting to look at them as a field watch, but is there value in comparing the aesthetically similar options too?

Acrylic and old school...it may sound stingy, but I'll stick to my Vostoks, Amphibias and Komandirskies. Ministry case, old school square, you name it...or a few nice Seiko Recraft pieces for that money.

Well idk. Nice looking watch. The main dealbreakers for me are the pressed on caseback (I know, they are also common on some of the luxury watches, but I always have my brother's Daniel Wellington and about every Aldi and Lidl watch in my head, I've ever encountered), no screw down crown (nothing is more annoying than losing a war because all your soldier's watches gut rusty on the inside due to water ingress and therefore quit their sevice and now all companies are beyond schedule while shit is hitting the fan) and the welded lugs.
If I was looking for a military, vintage style watch, I would go for a vostok. I am currently owning a Komandirskie with a Steel case (basically an amphibia with a Komandirskie dial; got mine on ebay for $25 USD shipped from Russia in an auction) and I am beating the crap out of this little guy. I use it for extreme outdoor activities (especially enduro mountainbiking), I wear it while sleeping, swimming, showering, bathing, yeah basically 24/7. I have never ever felt the need to put it down (okay sometimes in bed, when the watch gets in the way of a comfy leeping position). It's a decently reliable companion in my everyday life. A firend of mine once calles it a Kalashnikov for your wrist: Not the most accurate piece of equipment, but it will never let you down if you need it.
Not sure why they welded on the spring bars. Pretty much the only strap you’ll be able to put on it is a nato strap, and in terms of functionality, a nato strap is designed to keep the watch on your wrist should a spring bar fail. So unless both spring bars fail, having them welded on is useless unless you already plan to only use nato straps.
Yes mate, this watch was and is designed to be nato strap only for that very reason.
I have my original G10, issued to me at Sandhurst in 1979. I wear it regularly, it’s bomb proof (or soldier proof!) it is small, but simple, the lume is excellent and it is incredibly accurate. With 3 Omegas, one Breitling, a Rolex and a couple of Seikos to choose from it’s surprising how often this one gets strapped on in the morning. I also have a Hamilton Khaki 44 and it’s nowhere near as good as the CWC G10.
Don’t mind the size but not a big fan of the fixed lugs...thanks for the great video as usual
Great review Jodi. I really like the size of the CWC and the Hamilton. I have a 7 inch wrist as yourself and I personally like the smaller watches. I wish that they would have put drilled lugs and regular springbars as I am not a fan of Nato's or Zulu's. thanks again and thank Mr. X for his lending in of this piece and for his service.
Vostok Amfibia 090662M is a great alternative, though quite bigger with 41 mm. Automatic, 200 m water resistant, cushion case and super reliable. Got mine to +1 second a day after adjusting it. You can buy around 6 Amfibias for one CWC. ;)
Very cool little watch from an interesting company that still flies under the radar. It's a homage to their recently passed away founder.
I think they have a very cool lineup of watches. Still hope that one day they'll produce an automatic version of the SBS Dive Watch. CWC are you listening? ;-)
Their G10 straps are exceptional! I think the CWC Nato straps are one of the best currently on the market.
Very comfy, no-nonsense construction, very cool looking. IMHO you can forget all those high end silky smooth seat belt nato straps. Get a CWC!

Broke my original when with the commandos and got issued a Seiko chronograph alarm locally purchased and funny old thing I didn't hand it in when I left the navy and returned to the army, at the end of my service I sent it for a service and was told that I could have a new model (7T32 6A50) for the price of the service! last year I sent that one for a service and had the watch returned and was given an SNE 473 solar sport for the price of a service!! might just buy this one for the nostalgia :-)
In my opinon 36mm is perfect, although I'm not into the tonneau case. I'll probably end up with a CWC Fat Boy of my vintage (1980), just for the kicks.
FYI the dial is an old stock Tritium one. The hands are super Luminova. That is the reason for the difference in colour.

I think that size is timeless. Remember just 50-70 years ago that was normal if not big! I love that size.
I have both CWC and Hamilton from the 70s the CWC Quartz from the 80s and a Pulsar when the military went cheap,thank goodness I was out of the Army by then

I've been watching old bond films on Pluto tv. I want every watch from that series
