Had the decathlon (in orange) for a couple of years and I love it. First down jacket I’ve had and I know there are much thicker warmer ones, but I’m amazed how warm this one is for something that disappears into its own pocket. Makes a nice little camping pillow too and doubles up as a little ‘booster’ quilt if my sleeping. A giant quite warm enough.
The waist chinch on the Decathlon is the winning factor Must be able to close the bottom from drafts I purchased the synthetic version as I am in cold and wet conditions I am very pleased with it I needed to go one size larger for a comfortable fit
When it comes to buying specialty products with varying levels of cost, there could definitely be a graph showing a steep upturn in cost in relation to smaller and smaller gain in utility. If you wanna be warm, that's cheap. When you wanna be warm, maximally comfortable, and have little tiny improvements that just barely matter, that costs.
Personally I really like the Helikon-Tex wolfhound hoodie with climashield instead of down. With only a long sleeve shirt underneath I did a 4 mile hike in below freezing temps and was extremely comfortable with its insulation.

I just got the Decathalon with the synthetic insulation and I found the sizing to be pretty spot on. I got a large and it fits well with room to layer at 6’ and 185lbs. Got some of their merino blend base layers for dirt cheap.
I got really good deal ordering from Montbell Japan. Their size is 1 smaller (i.e. I need to order L instead of US M), no tax, free shipping takes around 1-2 weeks. The JPY is relatively weak compared to USD and it's much cheaper than ordering from US store. I got Alpine Light (winter camping) and Superior Down (everyday wear) jackets together for $170 shipped!
Great video. So far I've been happy with my $22 clearance 32° Heat Ultra-Light down jacket. The version I have is no longer made. The current version has much larger baffles and it looks like it uses a 650 synthetic down. Mine is 90% down/10% feathers and has been great. Keeping my torso warm down to -5°F (with a base layer and outer shell - Note: my body does run on the hot side of things)
As a homeless guy I oppose any down, it can cost you your life when wet. Better set up: -merino whool underwear -polar fleece mid layers (2 thins is better than 1 thick), with colars -synthetic thin bodywarmer with colar -membrane rain jacket with hood and zip pits -use with beanie, buffs, gloves (and perhaps rain mitts), and gators Layer your head, neck, body, legs and feet, depending on situation. Don't get wet & best don't sweat.

I have a Trek 100 in down and synthetic. Both fantastic. I live in a damp climate (Ireland) so I prefer the synthetic for everyday use. If they had a chest pocket and a hood cinch, they’d be perfect. Sizing is way off though. I wear a medium in most brands and X-Large for Decathlon.
Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) Feather Pack. Stupid name, great jacket. Men’s medium hooded weighs 17oz and has 5oz hydrophobic 800FP down. 32gsm shell fabric. My 5 y/o model is a little lighter (15oz) and has 5.5oz DownTek, no inside stuff pockets but the packing pocket is big enough for a 1l bottle. Mine goes with me on every single trip, it gets cool enough at night in the summer that I need it.
The REI jacket is more of a climbers jacket with the oversized hood that will fit over a helmet and 2 pockets on the inside of the coat that you can store water bottles in.
I'm in Australia, and unfortunately the Decathlon costs $169 which is a lot. A similar jacket here is the Macpac Uber Light, which is 300g and costs $110. Hey Justin, I noticed you didn't mention the MEC Radiator Lite Down Hoodie. At $186 cdn, it's about $136 us which is in the same ballpark as the REI ones. I know the U.S. market is much larger and you likely have more views perhaps from them, but as a Canadian I would hope you'd still include the Canadian options from stores like SAIL, MEC, Atmosphere, and Mountain warehouse that we have access to for potential budget options. I really enjoy your content, don't take the criticism to hard on this. Just suggestions.
The point that is important is the durability. The quality of stitches. Etc pp. The advantage of decathlon stuff is, they produce it themselves. This makes their products so unbelievable cheap compared to others. Cause they don't need to produce dislocated (low transport costs, taxes, no dependency on other companies to produce parts) etc. But - it would be interesting how long a decathlon jacket lasts compared to a Patagonia etc. I second your opinion in some way but also know that my most lasting stuff was always Patagonia. Decathlon stuff never lastet pretty long. Their trekking pants for example. Stitches get loose very soon after some time of usage. Etc. As i said, yes - their functionality might be equal but their durability might differ a lot. Cheers
All depends on the shell. I've worn it with a fairly waterproof and breathable shell (RAB Down Pour, similar to Patagonia Torrentshell, both with armpit zips for sweat) shell in Iceland (wet and cold) a month ago and had no problems with losing fill power or it getting wet. But the DWR doesn't help much, so like with all animal down it's important your outer shell keeps out almost all the water under your conditions and is breathable enough to not build up sweat. For my day to day in the Netherlands it's been good with a cheaper, less waterproof soft shell

I purchased the Decathalon Trek 100 twice. Once directly from the manufacturer but I returned it when I saw it at Walmart for $20 less. While I like the jacket, I am wondering if anyone else has a jacket that has the zipper on the other side....which I assume is a result of being made outside of the U.S. Both jackets had the zipper on the opposite side. At 6'3" and 210 lbs........it's not because it's a woman's jacket either. Just curious.....
I really wish Decathlon made more of an effort to enter the US market. Opening two stores in San Francisco and then throwing in the towel just doesn't seem very inspired. I've never disliked a product i've bought from them. Bike parts, 60L bag, puffy, camp kit, it's always been good. Their online stock in the US has been really limited since they closed the SF locations a few years ago and we don't really have a retailer that's similar.
Even better for me: Uniqlo Ultralight Down Parka with 10D face fabric, DWR, and 750 fill power for $60 CAD (45% discount on last season). That’s $44 USD.

That is based on the European system of measurement which results in the number being ~50-100 CUIN lower. Most of my audience is more familiar with products that use US measurements, so I adjusted the number for comparability.
@@JustinOutdoors would you say then Rab and Mammut also then have higher fill vs what’s posted on their website since they are UK and Swiss?
What about Japanese montbell?
What about the MEC Radiator Lite Down Hoodie! Gotta rep that Canadian gear! haha
Maybe if they dropped the price in half. haha
The Decathlon is a copy of the Arc'teryx Cerium, which costs 4 times the price.
down to freezing ith a t shirt.. in dry cold conditions , certainly not humid cold conditions.
Ebay "down jacket" pick size any reputable brand ex. Eddie Bauer, LL Bean are some great budget outdoor brands with much to offer the casual or new coming outdoors enthusiast.

Eddie Bauer Cirrus Lite can often be found at Costco for $40-60. Surprised no one ever mentions this.
I have the Decathlon, it's ace, feels a little thin but it does keep you warm unless it's very cold. And a nice feature is it packs away in it's own pocket (something they kept rather quiet about, oddly, I accidentally found that on one of Decathlon's videos, one of the pockets has a reversible zip so you can pack it into itself.
Was tempted by the bigger version MT500 - anyone tried that?
I got the uniqlo down jacket cuz it was on sale and it’s pretty dang warm
I've been using a jacket called hawke company found at t.j. Maxx for like 20 bucks or something it's pretty warm its not bad
The first house i purchased i had mortgage with an 18% interest rate.
Historically, 6-7% has been a "normal" interest rate. The problem is that the houses are OVERPRICED.
Picked up a hoodless Trek 100 (I don’t like hoods much) for less than $70 AUD on clearance. 😊
Don’t have access to REI here, but Decathlons returns policy is excellent.
If money is not a problem, and I just want the best, which one, or which brand do you recommend?
Is this completely independent or have you received anything from any of the companies mentioned??
Define independent? REI and Decathlon sent me both jackets at no charge.
Thanks for clarifying. Sounds like some good Kit then. Thanks for the reviews.
I have the decathlon. It's brilliant
Does anyone know what tent that is in the background?
Shout out for the Tog24 DRAX MENS HOODED DOWN JACKET
Say what you want, but 32 degrees makes some of the best inexpensive base layers, clothes, and jackets out there!! You pay about 20-40$ for a jackets that keeps you WARM! I love 32degrees and everything I have bought from them, and no I don’t work there!😀
Decathlon are great. Sizing is a bit on the small size.
I have the trek 100. But now we need a company to make a budget ultralight 1000fp down winter puffy.
Yea i can confirm it works great down until 30 degrees
I'm 6'4 230 top heavy.
Will a xl fit?
Probably need an XXL
What is better than Justin ? Two Justin's ! Hell yeah !
The Decathlon Jacket is 35$ In Europe
I purchased the Decathalon Trek 100 twice. Once directly from the manufacturer but I returned it when I saw it at Walmart for $20 less. While I like the jacket, I am wondering if anyone else has a jacket that has the zipper on the other side....which I assume is a result of being made outside of the U.S. Both jackets had the zipper on the opposite side. At 6'3" and 210 lbs........it's not because it's a woman's jacket either. Just curious.....
I just bought a montane for 15 bucks. 2nd hand.
Great vid. I down waxed my Decathlon a couple of times, works perfectly 👍
I got the synthetic version of the trek 100.
Eddie Bauer CirrusLite down jacket is $104 and also goes on sale for much lower and blows both of these jackets out of the water for value and warmth.
Even better for me: Uniqlo Ultralight Down Parka with 10D face fabric, DWR, and 750 fill power for $60 CAD (45% discount on last season). That’s $44 USD.
I m more interested in the cheaper one :-)
I got a Patagonia sweater down for $125 at rei

That Decathlon looks like a great deal. I have a cheap Eddie Bauer that I’ve loved and finally burned a hole in it.
I got one of those a costco for like $40
UA-cam algorithms are getting creppy, my name is also Justin, I’m also 5’10, I’m also 180 pounds, I’m also a 33 inch waste…. But no I don’t have a decathlon jacket.
