Today, we'll take a look at the new dropdown menu controls and text expressions in After Effects 2020 (v17.0). We'll discuss how to link up and use the dropdown menu to rig up a project template.
Using intuitive menus will make it much easier to streamline the workflow and make it easier for editors and collaborators to modify the project using Essentials Graphics. In the tutorial, we're changing mainly the color of certain elements, but you can use the same idea to modify other properties, like text size, layout placement, opacity, effects, etc.

I have a question. Can you apply style with expressions to only a part of the text?
Just few cases where this could be usefull: change the size of text for the cents of a prize, put in bold a word if it is part of a list...

Awesome. Thanks. Now I'm stuck with some problems though. Do I do if statements for a Ton of things, or do I just make copies of layers and change the opacity (you can't change visibility right?). So maybe I'm making some titles that are left aligned and animate on/off the left. Then I need a right aligned option. It Seems much easier to just have them all in the same comp and for the right/left dropdown toggle, change opacity (which i would do with a transform effect so it doesn't interfere with any opacity animation I might have on a layer)
But is that the way to go? Or can you toggle between compositions somehow?

Thanks Andy! Unfortunately we cannot toggle on/off visibility, so you may need to do if/else on the opacity to change visibility of the layers. Something like if(dropdown is this){ originalOpacityValue;} else { 0;}. You'd probably be better off just having them all in the same comp, AE doesn't make it easy to do what you want although they are moving in that direction with the Essential Graphics and MOGRT stuff!
