For those interested, NASAs current plans for Mars sample return make it the most complex and ambitious remote robotics mission ever attempted. Involving the Perseverence rover already on Mars and a future lander and orbiter, absolutely insane stuff.

The two biggest issues are the ice and the thin atmosphere, the atmosphere is so weak water vapor can’t be trapped and the ice is so cold it would skip straight to a gaseous form rather than water. The idea to terraform would be to intentionally induce Global Warming. This would creat a thick atmosphere, slowly melt the ice and naturally create a rain cycle then it’s just a matter of seeding the planet and letting nature take its course by the time it’s over the plants will have strengthened the atmosphere on its own and create a livable biosphere. The idea to how to do this is very simple we just nuke the planet, the nukes would quickly and easily throw the planet into global warming then we launch probes with the purpose of just carpet bombing the planet with seeds of all kinds.

Which is exactly what SLS is and that only launched in 2022, nearly 3 decades after the book was written.

For context about the height of that mars volcano: to us, mountains with an elevation anywhere over 20,000 ft are EXTREMELY high altitude and easily require an oxygen mask here on earth. I think the altitude at the peak of Everest is around 29,000 ft and Everest from base to peak is roughly 15,000 ft. Keep in mind as well that an altitude of 4,000 ft is already considered high elevation and most mountains in the Blue Ridge/Appalachian range are around that elevation at the top. 4,000 ft is enough to make your ears pop. Olympus Mons on Mars peaks at an altitude of 72,000 ft, and its base is located right on the planet’s datum (similar to our sea level, basically elevation-zero) so base to peak is also 72,000 ft.
