    Head injuries and how they are treated is a growing concern across all sports, but the nature of concussion in cricket is somewhat unique. As the death of Phillip Hughes in 2014 tragically proved, an apparently innocuous strike to the head can turn fatal. In partnership with Loughborough University, the ECB medical team are investing heavily in the investigation of concussion and it's affects, intent on making cricket a safer game for all.
    This is the official channel of the ECB. Watch all the latest videos from the England Cricket Team and England and Wales Cricket Board. Including highlights, interviews, features getting you closer to the England team and county players.

    I remember one day when i was batting for our school team, I tried to do a pull shot. But instead of hitting the bat the ball hit my helmet. Even though that was a relatively slower ball, i couldn't understand what was happening for few seconds. Now i just cant imagine someone like Starc's ball hitting my helmet.

    My suggestion for the neck protection of the batsman. I think we have to invent some cousion for neck like we used knee caps, or like F1 drivers, bike riders wear under the helmet. It should be swet proof and having think layer over the neck which minimised the impact of ball on neck nerves. It should be stretchable and comfort for the batsman.

    Gavaskar and Viv Richards used to play with barely cap on while pulling. Imagine the amount of damage it could have done in the pre-helmet era

      I think that’s a big reason why the game is more expansive now. Less chance of serious injury if you play risky shots. Risky shots when done right equal runs

    During civil and Gavaskar time 6 bouncers were allowed during Sachin early years 1-2 years 6 we’re allowed then it reduced to 2

    The helmet should be redesigned like some air bubble or heavy density cushion cover over it in order to absorb the shocks at very initial hitting.

    • @wunnell
      @wunnell 5 років тому

      I'm not sure how much you understand physics. The helmet has foam inside it already. If you cover the helmet with something else absorbent then you are going to increase the weight for one thing. Also, as you make the material softer and lighter, you would have to make it thicker to absorb the same amount of shock. If a batsman had to wear a big air bubble or cushion on their head then it would be extremely unwieldy, to the point that they might even be blown over in a strong wind. The trick of helmet design is to find the sweet spot between maximising protection and minimising restrictions to the batsman's natural movements.

      I think he is not mentioned as he didn't suffer a head injury, he was hit in the neck causing a haemorrhage from a dissected artery. Wish I could take back seeing the video when it was just a suspected head injury.

    A concussion can take a year to fully recover from. You can get headaches, dizziness, blurring etc. for months after. The long term effects are more unknown.
    I would quit after three, at most. The more you have, the more likely you are to have another, and the worse the long term effects, and we don’t know how those manifest themselves with any certainty. We do know that suicide rates are higher in retired American Football players, and wrestlers who suffered head injuries over long careers.
    One deceased wrestler appeared to have had early onset dementia from analysis of his brain post mortem.
    NFL Quarterback Trent Green retired after three severe concussions, and I think that was a wise decision.

      Absolutely right. People do forget how dangerous cricket is until someone like Mitch starc or Jofra bowls a short one and hits a helmet. Yes there’s less shots to the head than the other sports you named but a shot to the head is a shot to the head. Treat them the same.
