Just wanted to add that you may want to put welding blanket to stop welding spatter ( cherries) from damaging paint on outside tailgate. Also if you keep your ground close to your work it won't arc across hinges or bearings. And yes I learned these points the hard way.
@@quasar1184 That's some good points. I never thought of how bearings could be affected by welding. I have a video that I'm not sure if I'm going to post it where I wish I knew that.

Good creativity. Easy for us to be armchair posters. I only have two recommendations. 1. Get a tailgate from junkyard to hack on and save original when truck is sold or traded. 2. That can't be weather proof. But it's a great idea.
It doesn’t have to be weatherproof. The tailgates are not sealed to begin with and will drain any water they get in them. They are not made to keep water and dust out.
Nice video. Might have to do that to my truck. I am an organization freak. I love any kind of cool storage. I have so much storage I need storage for my storage. Lol
Well done. Not hiding the error and showing what your plan to fix it is helpful to many people. Only thing that worried me was welding on the truck and not having the shunt attached to the battery. The electrical surge from welding can create problems in the different computer control modules. Older rigs the trick was disconnecting the battery but newer ones that doesn’t always work. I used to own a truck equipment shop and learned GM was the most forgiving for this issue.
That is brilliant! I’m a “Find storage in every little niche” kind of guy, and I love this idea. Just one word of advice: Get a patent or copyright or something on this. The auto manufacturers have probably already watched this and will be coming out with “new and improved” do-everything tailgates. The already have the steps and bells and whistles, so I don’t know why somebody hasn’t thought of this - till now! Good on you!
A patent attorney will usually charge between $8,000 and $10,000 for a patent application, but the cost can be higher. In most cases, you should budget between $15,000 and $20,000 to complete the patenting process for your invention.
Good job, KC, it looks great. But I agree with you about cutting open the tailgate. Not in my truck, at least not by me... I just put a 7/16ths sheet of OSB on the bed, pinned two slats of OSB strips long enough to chock in a Rubbermaid Tote up against the forward bulkhead of the truck bed and the left side of the truck bed. I keep my cargo straps, 2" receiver hitch plug, jumper cables, and anything else I care to put in the Tote. Works well for me. This is not to denigrate your excellent work. Your tailgate adaptation looks fabulous. It's just that I decide to keep things very simple.
Cool idea. The only problem i see is that u didn't put any weather stripping along the edges of the opening. U might open that up one day and find it full of water and possibly get your wiring exposed to moisture
I wish I would have mentioned that as I have a tunnel cover. I did experience that one time when I left it open and we got a big storm. Tailgates and doors are designed to drain any water that finds its way in them but only in their upright position. I think your idea of weather stripping is awesome to solve it altogether.

Thank youf ro sharing this KCreation ;) I bought an old Silverado and the tailgate is in great shape on the outside but apparently something hit it from the inside at high velocity and bent the tailgate to the point it is very difficult to open and close. I'm going to need to either find a way to straighten it or replace it. I was considering making a tailgate but I think I am going to do a hybrid with storage now. Basically, I'll make a tailgate that is a storage box with diamond plate lid but recess it into the skin if the original after it is relieved and straightened. Sort of like you have but the whole tailgate will be a storage box.
Absolutely! I use it all the time. I thought I used stainless hinges but somehow didn't so I would change that next time and if you don't have a cover of some sort a seal is recommended.
I have recent pictures on my FB and it is doing really well. I will do this to my next truck. I do freshen the paint on the outside like once a year but I drag stuff across it allot.
This is my favorite tailgate storage build yet. I love how you used the original cut out as the lid. You also didn’t make a box to insert, just used the hole as storage but sort of made a box by sectioning off the area from the underneath with the foam. My only concern is how long will the foam last and is this water proof?
Thank You, It is not waterproof. I have had it get water in it when I hauled stuff when it was raining. Surprisingly it dried out fast in a day. I built this about a year before posting and it is still in great shape. I did apply more paint to it.
This way, if you send the truck back at End of Lease, you still have a "Custom Tailgate, Make/Model for year: (years fit)" that you can sell on Ebay or whatever sale site happens to be best at the time.
@@laughinghyena001 Ow I see then you aren't violating your lease either. I know with how well it works I would have to put one on the next truck and the next. Ow you reminded me I should update my pined comment.
If you're scared don't be. Your paint colour is super common and those tailgates are available at a pick and pull for $100-$120 all day long. I'd have kept the brand new one in the basement and modified the junk yard one. Great idea though. Think I'll do something similar on my 4th gen.
Nice thing I'll be doing to my tailgate. Luckily for me I have no wiring there and it's all bent up from wood beams getting dropped on the top. UA-cam is the best place for this kind of stuff!
Thank you. I have used mine a lot and it is still working flawlessly. The only downside is its really scratched up without the bed liner but still worth the trade off.
@@KCreations4You Hey! Just watched your video again and I have a welding tip for you...lay a thick piece of scrap metal next to the thinner material you want to weld and flow over to the thinner stuff. Makes it less likely to blow through
@@KCreations4You It would be a quick transition. I generally do it when my welder just won't go low enough for stuff smaller than 1/8 inch or sheet metal; any attaching points would be exceptionally weak so it should snap off almost by itself. I also do it when welding on sheet metal since it kind of acts like a heat sink too. I normally would just use a scrap 6x3 inch 1/4 inch thick piece.
@@KCreations4You If possible, absolute best way to weld thin stuff is to overlap and stitchweld or spot weld. It's beyond hard to get a good buttweld with thin stuff. Still though, the way you did it was a great way! I'm not a pro or anything, just a guy who likes making stuff and admired the work you did.
If I had this welded by a professional it would pay for a cheap welder twice however the welds would look amazing and clearly mine do not. Once I got one and got some practice I couldn't understand how I went without. I do like making stuff though just don't start with stuff like trailers or parts that could kill someone.
Interesting idea. I am thinking of doing that to my station wagon. 1998 model so I think the warranty is well expired. Just as a side note probably best to try first on a tailgate from a wreck or purchase one second hand or new.

I just left it off and a couple times a year I have been touching it up with paint. I almost ripped it off several times when it was on.
updates on how it's working longterm?
I have recent pictures on my FB and it is doing really well. I will do this to my next truck. I do freshen the paint on the outside like once a year but I drag stuff across it allot.
Very brilliant
Thank you sorry I didn't get notified for your comment. Its encouraging to hear you like it.
Real cool man!
Thank you. Can I ask how you found the video?
This is my favorite tailgate storage build yet. I love how you used the original cut out as the lid. You also didn’t make a box to insert, just used the hole as storage but sort of made a box by sectioning off the area from the underneath with the foam. My only concern is how long will the foam last and is this water proof?
Thank You, It is not waterproof. I have had it get water in it when I hauled stuff when it was raining. Surprisingly it dried out fast in a day. I built this about a year before posting and it is still in great shape. I did apply more paint to it.
Re: Lease/Lean truck.
Find same tailgate at junkyard, fix up nice, match paint, swap t-gates.
😁👍
Make it worth more 😀
This way, if you send the truck back at End of Lease, you still have a "Custom Tailgate, Make/Model for year: (years fit)" that you can sell on Ebay or whatever sale site happens to be best at the time.
Did you make one?
Where did you source the hinges and latches?
Very good question. I got the hinges at Menards with the steel and the latches are from Amazon Here is a non affiliate link. a.co/d/4Az6XCT
Cool idea👍😎👍
Nice thing I'll be doing to my tailgate. Luckily for me I have no wiring there and it's all bent up from wood beams getting dropped on the top. UA-cam is the best place for this kind of stuff!
Thank you. I have used mine a lot and it is still working flawlessly. The only downside is its really scratched up without the bed liner but still worth the trade off.
@@KCreations4You Hey! Just watched your video again and I have a welding tip for you...lay a thick piece of scrap metal next to the thinner material you want to weld and flow over to the thinner stuff. Makes it less likely to blow through
@@CaramelColored Wouldn't the scrap piece be welded to it as well or am I missing something?
What an awesome idea! Great way to add extra function to an otherwise unused space! Thanks for sharing; you have a new subscriber :)
I have an upcoming video about getting a subscriber and I want you to pay attention cause you fit it lol Thank you!
Did you see the last part of my latest video?
The new trucks should come with this
I agree!
Awesome video.
Thank you Dennis!
I wonder hoe many welding projects I can come up with to justify the cost of all the welding equipment.
If I had this welded by a professional it would pay for a cheap welder twice however the welds would look amazing and clearly mine do not. Once I got one and got some practice I couldn't understand how I went without. I do like making stuff though just don't start with stuff like trailers or parts that could kill someone.
Great idea I would have never thought of that
Hello! I’m curious, is the piano hinge comment supposed to be punny?
Good catch, You may never know 😁
so what sort of one or 2 piece hinge did u honestly use in this project any close up's & any info., on where u got it from & etc,. plzzzzzz
Interesting idea. I am thinking of doing that to my station wagon. 1998 model so I think the warranty is well expired. Just as a side note probably best to try first on a tailgate from a wreck or purchase one second hand or new.
I considered getting a used tailgate but for me they wanted $450 otherwise yes it would be best.
@@KCreations4You Believe it or not that’s what I would have to pay for a 98 model tail gate.
@@davidbwn Oofta, its strange how they want soo much for them.
@@KCreations4You Known Classic soon to be a vintage vehicle. Also the name and badge. Basically the vehicle is a Holden Commodore VT series.
Well just wait for the extended warranty telemarketers to call....I wasted their time looking up 1926 model T...32 Roadster....1948 Tucker.
Did you get the idea from the new Checy Colorado’s and GMC Canyons? Nice job regardless.
Yes, but please don't tell anyone I went to the future 😀
Very Cool
Thank you David!
My only concern would be water getting in there now.. I wonder how you could have made somewhat weather resistant with the metal being wavy
I have a cover but I think a simple rubber gasket going around it would work.
I'm doing this, thanks
Your very welcome. I have another storage idea coming this year.
Oh no, I looked right into the welding arc, now I'm blind! 🤣
Than my next video will show you the light for sure!
I wish I can do that in but in California you can'thave anything nice or leave things in a car. They have stolen my tailgate 3 times.
That would be infuriating.
time 2 put air tag's or some thing inside it next time so u can track em down......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks good
Thank you!
Manufacturers should offer more storage options. They would probably only charge 11k for this tailgate storage box.
The 2024 canon comes with this now.
