I swear, the amount of people claiming to be at Nirvana shows is getting to the level of the 25 million people that swear they were at Woodstock. Every live video of Nirvana on YT, especially shows from 89-91 before they exploded, has multiple " I was there" comments. If you added up all those comments from the numerous videos it would easily surpass not only the recorded attendance but the venue's capacity.
@@FURTHER_ADO I was there. It was at the paramount downtown Seattle. Mudhoney and bikini kill opened for them. I was 17 years old. Got to see alot of the Seattle music from 90 to 94. In that area. It was a great time in music.
Stage diving was definitely a thing in the 90’s. Sometimes security stopped them and sometimes the musicians did a stage dive. Kurt was known to dive into the crowd while holding his guitar.
I saw Nirvana live in concert in 1993. Stage diving was the normal thing to do. We all knew nobody would hurt the band. In fact it was encouraged and expected by the band. You should have seen how they destroyed all their instruments at the end of the show. Kurt would dive head first into the drum set . Great times!
@@nolancook4801 ikr but all the way back in the early 90’s even when I wasn’t around but now since he’s gone and no longer around nor his concerts being held anymore :(
Growing up I used to go to punk shows like this all the time. It’s super common for people to be jumpin on stage and crowd surfing. You can still go to shows like this, it’s just more of a punk and hardcore thing.
I was born in '76 and punk is my favorite genre of music. I'd give anything to be able to go back to those days of CBGB'S, Max's Kansas City and the like. See all that shit LIVE, instead of the previous few clips I can scrounge up on UA-cam or see in punk documentaries.
Bands were cool with it back in the day as long as you didn't knock over their gear or mess with the band. Nowdays security has gotten so strict they won't allow anybody near the stage. They set the crowd barrier so far back you have to pole vault if you wanna even think of reaching the stage. Many shows back in the 90's and before never even had a crowd barrier.

The 70s babies would gladly welcome you! We were living that shit up back then. I was a Sophomore in high school when Nirvana first hit. I didn't do actual concerts much in those days (poor as shit), but watching Unplugged and live performances on TV was a great substitute. I gotta say, I laughed my ass off when you reacted to my guy stage diving.
Paramount was arguably their greatest gig ever imo, after 93' Kurt wasn't the same anymore. 91-92 was probably the most he ever felt being the Rockstar he always wanted to be.
I disagree I actually think 1992 was their worst year as far as live shows. 1991 Kurt was still not totally worn down yet but he was having a rough time in 92' coping with a bunch of different things. 93 and 94 he was a bit more rested and fresh. Watch some of his 94 shows in Europe they are actually incredible. He seemed sort of out of it physically but his voice sounded great and the band was extremely tight right up until the end
Best, energetic reaction to this live performance. They did go crazy here. And, like you, I wish I was ready for the stage dive. Unlike you, I was born 15 years before that would have made any sense for me.
That's how most of the shows I went to in the 90s were. It was about respect. You didn't touch the band. You have a 5 sec limit on stage and the crowd will catch you.
First. One of the best Nirvana songs, btw.!!!!! Funny fact: the Nirvana's drummer has his own band (since like 1994/1995), called Foo Fighters. You can check out some of them songs if you want to!!!!!!!
So great they filmed that on 16mm film. Nice to have such great quality video from them. And the two dancers on stage were friends of Kurt. He wanted them to be on stage with them.
Nirvana is known for those high pitched squeals that make you cringe up yet love it at the same time. the 90's was the BEST time for music - yes we WERE having fun!
Yes, that was a fan who almost certainly helped by other moshers into the 'no fan land' and then either avoided lazy security or evaded slow security. And of course, the only way to 'safely' escape detection was to immediately stage dive into a hopefully vigilant mosh pit, where you're caught by strangers and sent on your way. On this occasion, Garfunkel Hair wouldn't have had many places to hide.
dude its called stage diving, its part of the Punk Rock, Metal and Alternative Rock music dance, it goes with Headbanging, moshing, pogo and slam diving.
Nirvana, 3 guys that sound like 10. None of them get enough credit…Kurt’s songs may be simple but it’s incredibly hard to be that sonically consistent and to sing his tunes. One of the many reasons no one sounds like them. Any song from live at the paramount or live at reading 92 is worth the time!
Man they used to do that at all the older nirvana shows. You can find a ton of the concerts on UA-cam. Check out their performance at the trees club in Texas. Kurt hits a bouncer in the head with his guitar during the song love buzz
Went stage diving a bunch back in the 90's, no one gave a shit, least of all the bands. I remember doing it at Warped Tour with Blink 182 and Eminem in '97
"this man ran up on stage, stage dived, and nobody even flinched".... welcome to the 90's. That used to be routine at virtually every gig we ever went to. Then we would jump back on top of the crowd, crowd surf all the way to the front and do it over again, lol. I remember going to gigs with multiple people doing this every song played.
In the 90's stagediving was so common that security never really tried to stop it. It was just an accepted part of the show. Most bands were cool with it as long as the people didn't knock over their gear or mess with the band. Hell, in the 90's even alot of the band member stage dived themselves!
I agree that the security in the 90s was more lax about stage divers, but there were some definite exceptions. Dude jumped on stage during a Tool concert and tried to hug Maynard, but Maynard suplexed him and scream sang in his ear while holding a headlock.
I used to do A LOT of security back then. The artist would let you know before the show if kids could jump up on stage. It happened quite often. Andrew W.K. was one of the wildest.
Awesome reaction! First time I saw the dude jump into the crowd I'm sure I made the same face. Nirvana was always better live. The raw and edgy sound was exactly how they wanted to sound and that didn't come across as well with the studio versions IMO. MTV live "Lake of fire", or "My Girl" are both great. Hard to go wrong with anything from the MTV live stuff though.
Believe it or not the lyrics are probably more important than the music... that's where Kurt's genius really shines through cause he takes story rhymes and turns them upside down. great review.
If you think that one person getting on stage was wild, you should watch some old punk rock live show clips (Dead Kennedys, for example) where people were all over the place.
So like people still stage dive but after dimebag Darrel’s murder.. it’s been not quite as loose. There was also and incident where a venue burned down so they’ve tightened up security over the years for various reasons.
