Finished this piece and played it for my family on Christmas.
I'm coming back to the piano after over a decade and picked up this sheet music because it's one of my favorite pieces though I'd never played before. Something achievable but new to encourage practice. This was incredibly helpful as I try to find my hands again. Thank you.
Ah so nostalgic - I tried this literally as a 3 week piano beginner 6 years ago. My teacher told me about the notes of the bass/treble clef and I painstakingly decoded every note in this piece and strung it together over a few months! I couldn’t ever nail the final 3 chords though and I was too shy/embarrassed to play it for my teacher as I used to get the shakes every lesson 😂 This video has reminded me how much I love this piece so I’m going to dig it out this morning, and see how it goes.
Great to see your thoughts here Josh. I will approach it with a bit more experience this time around hopefully. It should be more ‘readable’ by now instead of going one note at a time!

My high school choir accompaniatrice played this piece for me She played it divinely it could not have been played any better and she played it at the same time she was discovering it
To me that was heaven on earth and I was sitting right next to her
As she opens the piano room so I can practice between in-school learning periods

Great video, I like your recommendations about how to use the dynamics to impact the quality of the tone. I have a book with performance notes on the gymnopedies and also suggests using the sustain pedal half or even a quarter down on some occasions.

Josh, I love the tone you get when you do pull back on the keys as you play your chords. I recall in another video you did I thought you were pushing forward but I may be mistaken. Is everything a call back to get that deep tone?

I have been learning this piece for the last week or so and what fascinates me the most is how differently (as far as hand and finger use for playing chords is concerned) everyone is playing it. Some rely on the pedal and do not even hold some notes and others use very difficult finger substitutions to always adhere to the score (holding dotted half notes). Why is it so Josh? Could you also talk more about using the pedal properly for this piece?Thank you, Michael
I just learned and performed this piece! It's so fantastic! I do have one question though. Currently, I've only been practicing piano for 1.5 years and have learned this and before that, Chopin's prelude in e minor. What pieces should I play next to continue my piano progress? I have Mendelssohn's Lieder Ohne Worte Op. 19 No. 6 in my sights as well as Liszt's Consolation No. 3. Are those good pieces to learn now and what other pieces would be good to learn now too?
Zossimov those are great pieces! Some easier Mozart and Haydn, and maybe some Bach inventions would be good stepping stones as well. Good luck!

I didn't know jumping 2 octaves will be that hard that it must be taught..hahaha as someone who had not played piano for 10 years but learned piano since I was 5 till my 20s, I instantly able to pick up the jumping. Wow..I didn't know for some people it's hard. Seems I still have few of my memory muscle left. What I lost even further is ability to fast reading notes..LoL

Hi Josh, i was just curious, you say at approx 5min 11 sec, you think probably the hardest is Prokofiev 2. Are you referring to Sonata 2 in D min?

A piece is more than the technical aspects. Simply considering the dynamics and listed characteristics does not truly express the piece.
Particularly in a piece like Gymopédie 1, characteristic of Erik Satie's music, we must take some liberties to truly produce that air for the melody to sit on top of. One way to do this is slightly accentuate the top note in the left hand chord and making the second chord lighter to make it more fragile.

Learning this piece right now. Having problems with some of the chords. I feel like I need to cut the webbing in my fingers to reach that far.

@@Anonkontello I'm having trouble with the 8ths. I think it's mostly because I've never played those chords and just need to used to it.
@@MkII-cw3rw Hmmm, interesting, admittedly if you can barely reach an octave, you'll have a hard time playing the piano, (this is coming from a person who can easily reach a tenth and still sometimes has difficulties.
@@Anonkontello i apologize. I can reach octaves no prob. Its the 10ths that in having trouble with.
For all difficult cords you can play the right most note of the left hand with your right hand, some "experts" here may say that sounds differently but on a normal piano and in a normal room you can't hear any difference

To me the word doloureux here is not meaning painful but sorrowful, another of it's meaning, because that is the more abstract meaning.
