I have also paired this album with The Shining, and A clockwork Orange. I believe Pink Floyd’s music really pairs well with movies. They’re special sound has been described by young, new fans as, “I felt like I was in a movie”
It's certainly a rare talent. A lot of Mark Knopfler's songs make me feel like I'm watching a movie, too; 'Telegraph Road' being 'The History of the Rise and Decline of the American Mid-West'.
@@floydfreak-vn2uj Knopfler's done quite a few film soundtracks so it makes sense. They don't sound too different from his main studio releases, Local Hero and A Shot At Glory especially.
We did NIN downward spiral with Clockwork orange. It lined up 10 times better. Kubrick's movie's are perfect for this. I believe I put on pretty hate machine for the second half.
The one that always makes me laugh is when the appearance of Miss Gulch on her bike lines up perfectly with the alarms going off at the beginning of "Time."
The cash register when Dorthy opens the door to Oz? Oz is ounce. It's a book about MONEY. Gold road. Oz of gold. Emerald City. Ruby Slippers. A city of leisure.... There's a hundred more.... What about the end being a heart beat as they're pounding the Tim Man's chest. And if you play the album again??? The begging is a heart beat to it still beating with the tin man and the another 30 minutes of coincidences and than a 3rd time through too. What about Glenda's arrival? They're singing "I'm in a hi fidelity first class traveling set, I think I need a Leer Jet?"
Is it sad that I’ve watched “Dark Side of the Rainbow” more times then I’ve actually watched the Wizard of Oz normally? It’s just so good of an experience to hear and watch.
My son Adam did his version on UA-cam a few years before he passed away. It can be found by searching, “The Dark Wizard of Oz on the Dark Side of the Moon the Remix”. You might have to scroll down a couple. It is 44:08 minutes long. I hope you watch it and enjoy it!
yes and then the home crashes as the music does and the film turns from B+W to Color as "Money" cash register starts. How that could be random is beyond me.
@@DesignRhythm : Yeah, it's totally crazy to think that the most psychedelic, experimental, and performance art band of all time would do something crazy ingenious and subliminal, sort of inside joke to create an album that lines up so incredibly perfect to the first half of a legendary classic film is completely bonkers! Learning about the Echoes to 2001 would have been a great trial run a couple of years prior. Lining up other albums is seeing patterns in things, especially with only a handful of coincidences, but 65+ is hard to explain away. But like Nick Mason said, 'He always thought it was "The Sound of Music"'. Probably the GREASTEST non-denial quote I have ever read!
It’s REALLY just coincidence. I’ve seen my ex playing Street Fighter while listening to Megadeth and there’s times where that synchs so perfectly that it’s almost as if it was planned, but wasn’t.
I have to say starting on the third lion’s roar, is the best version; if for nothing else than getting to hear Money so perfectly break the silence after the house crashes and Dorothy opens her door to Oz (it’s also the first time you see color in the film, which totally adds to the overall effect) and not to mention Oz is supposed to represent (among many other thing) be an allegory for capitalism as well and the fact that Money is the first song you hear when you “arrive” is a fairly amazing coincidence, to say the least ;)
Stuff like this just happens. I remember playing “ a house is not a motel” by love. My mother starting calling my name just as the lyric “I hear you calling my name” was playing.
It predates the mid 90's, my buddy's older brother played it for us when we were in high school back in the late 80's. He was home for the weekend from college, where he saw it. Only difference was we used vinyl instead of a CD and had to pause the VHS to flip the record lol. Edit: btw, he started it on the second roar, so that's how I've always done it. Now I wanna see if there's much difference between that and doing it on the third.
Most of the uploads on YT start on the 3rd MGM lion roar. Then I'm guessing the 3rd roar from the cowardly lion. It's not perfect the whole time, but the parts that are, make it all worth the while. Two great works of art that compliment each other on the highest of levels. I rather watch it that way any day of the week.
Someone in the 70's we're listening to Floyd while Oz was on TV with the volume down (kinda popular back then). People would get high and didn't feel like shutting off the TV, (no remote back then) . While they were high, they stared at the tv and realized it kinda synced up. Thus, the word got around. That's my thought, just coincidence.
What I find interesting about the Dark Side of Oz is the album cover shows the light turning into color just like Wizard of Oz being black and white and turns into color ushering in colored movies. Instead of making the first movie with color being all color they used it as a pretty cool gimmick.
It definitely wasnt on purpose, but it's cool to experience. 3rd MGM lion roar for the first playthrough and 3rd roar of the cowardly lion for the second playthrough is how I always heard it was meant to be done. And it works pretty well that way.
That's what I've always been told as well. A buddy of mine did it back when we were in Kansas at Fort Riley in the Army in 2003. That's the way we tried it. It is pretty neat but I don't believe it lines up enough to have been intentional
Coincidence or not, if you have it synced correctly, the ENTIRE Great Gig In The Sky track (IMO) easily provides the most compelling "evidence" for the argument that it was done on purpose. Random isolated lyrics and sounds here and there are one thing... but that entire song is spot on with the tornado scene. For me, the next most compelling coincidence is the transition into the very next track, Money. In the movie, as Dorothy exits her house into Munchkinland, the second she opens the door the cash register sounds and Money begins... this is also the point in the movie when original theater patrons viewed film in color for the very first time. On the vinyl copy of DSOTM, Great Gig closes Side 1, and Money begins Side 2. So the first half of the album is exactly the same time length as the initial black & white portion of the film. As soon as Dorothy opens the door, we get COLOR and the second side of the album resumes.... looking at the DSOTM album cover; a single beam of white light against a black background passes through the prism and becomes the color spectrum. If you can't do the math from here... 🤷♂️ sorry.
I have watched it a couple of times that way. And I was headed to the moon the first time I watched it. Usually that frame of mind will find things wrong or out of sync in a weird way. But it was such a compelling and comforting watch, that I was just completely blown away by it. There has to be something to it, whether they want to admit it or not. I don't know why they wouldn't, it makes the album and their work that much more genius and amazing. I think it's better than the original that way personally.
Pink Floyd “Echoes” with 2001: A Space Odyssey from the Jupiter and beyond section onwards lines up perfectly. I’ll bet at least 20 people have already posted this….
I’m sure it’s just coincidence, but it’s fun to experiment with albums and films. I’ve synced dark side with the Simpsons movie, Wall-E with The Wall, and the Piper at the gates of dawn with the SpongeBob movie(2003). There was crazy synchronicities in all of them.
For me, Pink Floyd has always been a band that embraced the 'visualization of music', if you will. For instance, when they first started out with Syd Barrett they would show color slides of his artwork through the band and onto the wall behind them, which would bathe the band in varieties of colors during the show, which, as Syd took more drugs had the slides intentionally melted as they were shown to create a color-morphing effect. And now, we all know their concert shows with the round screen behind them are legendary. Not to mention when Dark Side of the Moon came out you couldn't be in a room with at least one person who hadn't taken a psychedelic drug while listening to the album, touting the fact they saw the most intense colors in their heads (experience descriptions varied). As @Modmary so succinctly stated in her comment below, their music can pair well with any movie. That being said, I am sure if you played any symphony from a classic composer that you could find where the music works well with any music, as well. After all, aren't music scores the classical music of our day? I, for one, don't care to mix mediums when listening to the music created by my favorite band. Playing the music while trying to find coincidences in a movie simply lessens the emotions the music creates when listening by itself. Bottom line, I am not one who has embraced The Dark Side Of The Rainbow conspiracy theory. Could they have done it on purpose? Sure, anything is possible. But, as you stated why wouldn't they admit to it? Unless they wanted it to be their own little inside joke? We'll never know...but what we do know is we do have one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
I absolutely remember hearing this back in the 70’s and you were supposed to drop the needle on the first track when Dorothy wakes up in color after the tornado
I've heard about this since highschool and I just watched it yesterdayv for the first time and I'm convinced that you need to be stoned out of your mind to see any connection.
I watched The Wizard of Oz synced up with Dark Side of the Moon for the first time just a few weeks ago here on UA-cam. While I will admit there were some cool moments (Great Gig in the Sky while the house is caught up in the tornado), I don't think it's intentional. I think someone was high at a party where someone had music playing and the Wizard of Oz just so happened to be on at the same time.
Most everyone does this wrong. Here are some pro tips. 1. Start the synch normally. Like he said, Balanced on the biggest wave really stands out. 2. When the CD ends, have The Wall ready. Insert Comfortably Numb right there. The Tin Man will be dancing in step with it. 3. After Comfortably Numb, start DSOTM again. Once again, you're looking for the lion's third roar. Only this time it's the Cowardly Lion. He roars twice and does a micro-roar. That's the one. 4. The second time through, the music lines up even better with the movie than the first time. It will bend your head. For balanced on the biggest wave, the Scarecrow is dancing down the road and loses his balance. Also the part where the Cowardly Lion is singing about being the king of the forest is truly priceless. 5. When that runs out, we go back to The Wall. Play The show must go on. 6. The movie ends during Run like Hell. Do all this and you will have the optimum Dark Side experience. I did this maybe 25 years ago and I've seen it over 50 times. If you get it all perfect, record it to a digital movie file or press it to a VCR tape. It's very hard to get perfect, but so worth it when it comes time to replay it.
Man I know they say this is just a freaking crazy coincidence but damn it goes together perfectly. When they break into money it's the second the movie goes color it's really cool
I remember “playing the game” when it first broke on the Internet 1.0. I was already a long-time Pink Floyd fan as a teenager (started listening to them at around five or so). It was definitely fun and works the best with just one play-through. One glaring flaw in the “more than coincidence, this is purposeful” theory is very simple. As cosmopolitan as they could be at times, Pink Floyd were very much an English band and The Wizard of Oz is very much an American cultural artefact. Furthermore, if it was purposefully designed, they could have done it better 😉. And finally, it was well documented as to how this album came about and no one ever uttered Oz. That said, this spontaneous synthesis does bring to light some interesting parallels between the works. Both were financially successful works that took advantage of some technological innovations. Both were informed by political issues, though Oz’s source novel was more about specific American politics from the 1890s (specifically about currency standard) whereas the album dealt with broader issues of modern living. Both have accumulated various legends and both have endured to be classics beyond its initial generation. So all in all … it’s all dark down in Emerald City 😁
This works with ANY album ANY film & ANY bong. Look up the phrase, "Confirmation Bias". Same reason fans of Nostradamus can read his vague quatrains and make connections as Post hoc rationalizations, which could falsely cause people to believe he could predict future events. Just because there's a correlation doesn't mean there is causation. This is also common in biblical interpretation. If one is beginning with the mindset that an omniscient deity inspired every word (even though it's been through so many translations and copies of copies and some of the later writings had the goal of fulfilling the previously written "prophecies"), then that person could falsely see correlation or causation where there is none. That's why learning about Skepticism, is so very important. (It should be a mandatory part of every curriculum). In the case of this video however, it's sometimes fun to let our brains wonder away temporarily.
Did not know about this conspiracy theory prior to watching this video. It's a very interesting subject & the way he explained the psychological facets of the phenomenon was a great thing to include. I might have to try to synch the media up myself to see what all the hype is about! Cool video & explanation!
The doll could be a reference to See Emily Play. They also did the music for a movie called, "The Committee" and at least part of another called, :"Zabriskie Point" as well as on called, "The Body," and then there was one much later on about a Pan-American car race that they did instrumental music for and,. one of their first public outings was for a movie called, "Let's All Make Love In London".
This is absolutely true. If you play DSOTM backwards and start the movie 2001, when Time starts the line "Ticking away the hours that make up a dull day" (which is now at the end of the song) coincides with the apeman throwing the bone into the air and now says. "And man and the Devil will never conquer the galaxy." Freaky I know.
The thing that makes me wonder is nick Mason saying that they had a rig set up for making soundtrack albums like more where they'd record while it was projecting. It means they had the capability whether or not they did.
I had a carousel CD player when I first did this with a bunch of friends. As the CD came to an end, we were convinced it was planned. Then the next CD - remakes of Schoolhouse Rock songs - started, and Blind Melon started singing "Three Is A Magic Number" as the three characters skipped on down the yellow brick road. My friend says, "So much for THAT theory!" and we all cracked up laughing.
Has Alan Parsons, the main producer of the album ever been asked? Is it possible HE was the one who worked with the editors of the album to make this magic happen?
Good video! Especially your summary toward the end. I really enjoyed the coincidences of this album/movie sync up. But yeah, coincidences are all they are, and lots of other album/movie link-ups would produce the same or even better ones.
@@DesignRhythm Not sure what you are trying to say. And in fact, you don't say very much at all. I have never "done" Dark Side of the Rainbow? You mean syncing up Dark Side of the Moon and Wizard of Oz, what this whole video is about? Yes, I have done it. And it is a series of coincidences with long stretches where there are no coincidences.
@@DesignRhythm I said LOTS of old album/movie link-ups would work as well, not ANY link-up. Have you tested every old movie and album combination? Or any, apart from this one? And if it's not a coincidence, what is It? Supernatural hoodooism? Or Pink Floyd arranged their album to sync with this one old movie? And never told anyone? Coincidence happens all the time.
@@bartstewart8644 So, if this is no big deal, what are the odds someone just happened to discover this pairing works perfectly? Where are all the other pairings? How do the songs stop / start precisely with scenes in the film and relate to the content of the film? What are the odds DOTM flips to side 2 precisely when Wizard turns to color? It can't sync up for every single second because it had to repeat for the 2nd half of the film - that is what makes it even more astonishing. If u know Pink Floyd, they're not going to tell u all their secrets - they're artists. "There are no coincidences in life; only consequences."
As always, I love your videos about weird music conspiracy theories. Well researched and thorough. I also love your general music histoy and how things were made videos.
I thought his research was crap. He basically just told us a bunch of other people's opinions. Why not play the top 10 synced parts and then tell explain how they are random. Anyone who has actually done the real thing will tell u how amazing it is. To believe someone just stumbled upon the connection is way more absurd.
Some random single dad was high. cleaning the house playing that album in 1 room loud enough to hear it in the living room. The kids were watching The Wizard of Oz. He still heard the music louder than the tv. His eyes widen "wtf" he tests this again later. That's it. that's how it happened
A couple other examples I think I remember seeing is On the Run starting when Dorothy falls into the pig pen and "All that you you see" playing when Dorothy sees the oil can.
To me any Floyd album just naturally "syncs up" with the world. If I put on Dark Side or Wish You Were Here in headphones while walking I instantly feel like I'm in a Pink Floyd video. Their music just has that unexplainable quality to it.
There is a rather mysterious connection between the bands Queen and Gentle Giant, though I have no idea whether the members of the former had ever heard of the latter. First, Frank Zappa was once asked in an interview what music he listened to apart from his own - he famously answered, "I like Queen. I like Gentle Giant". Second, GG also ended their album with the rock rendition of the British National Anthem - only they did it five years earlier than Queen. Third, Queen's 1991's hit song "I'm going slightly mad" suspiciously resembles both musically and idea-wise the Gentle Giant's 1978's song "Giant for a day". Even the music videos for them are somewhat similar.
One of my favorite pass times as a teenager was to smoke some pot and listen to music while watching TV. Amazing how much of the music seemed to be synced with the TV. lol
I would play the Tangerine Dream song "Phaedra" as soundtrack to the silent Maya Deren film, "Meshes of the Afternoon." Ppl would get a kick out of the synchonicity and some would even not believe it when I said it was all coincidence.
Instead of Echoes... play the DSOTM on "Jupiter and beyond the infinite" part of 2001 a space odyssey... seriously ... try it... when on the run comes up you will be blown away... the laugh even matches up when an image of dave comes up with his mouth open...
Pink Floyd band members have repeatedly insisted that the synchronicity between the album “Dark Side of the Moon” and the movie “The WIzard Of Oz” is coincidence. ‘ David Gilmour’s opinion on the matter: “Some guy with too much time on his hands had this idea of combining Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon”
The whole album has transitions to the next song. There is one transition in the album which is the most subtle and that's in the middle of the Album from "Great Gig in the sky" to "Money" and exactly there the movie goes from Black and White to Technicolor. Exactly like the album cover. That's in my opinion the biggest coincidence. Apart from the obvious stuff mentioned by everyone already and "somewhere over the RAINBOW".
I have the 75th anniversary blu-ray and a mid-90s CD. I know if I get the start of the bells from Time to sync with Miss Gulch coming in on her bicycle it synced for me and the tornado scene and The Great Gig in the Sky look great together.
In the 80s and 90s it was not uncommon to channel-surf on cable TV, while the speakers played a CD or the radio. The amount and extent of synchronicity between completely random video and audio elements is unquantifiable... but often hilarious, sometimes bizarrely anomalous, and occasionally so synchronous as to seem impossible, or predestined by a higher intelligence. Combine this event with a couple of bong hits, and you've got a cultural phenomenon waiting to explode.
@@noahhenson1669Is this Jackie Chiles from Seinfeld? Often hilarious, bizarrely anomalous and occasionally synchronous. "This is an infringement on your constitutional rights. It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous." "That's totally inappropriate. It's lewd, lascivious, salacious, outrageous." "I'm shocked and chagrined, mortified and stupefied. This trial is outrageous."😜
I always heard about this theory and one day went down the rabbit hole, though only for a short while before realizing it's probable coincidental nature. That said though, it truly is a strange and unusual coincidence no doubt!
I’ve heard the 2001/Echoes sync wasn’t an accident, but rather they were initially picked for the soundtrack. When Stanley Kubrick changed the score to established classical pieces, they kept what they had for their next album. Not sure how true that is, but it would make more sense than Dark Side and Wizard.
I had to watch it again, and really whatever you think it is.... there's no way it's just confirmation bias .... it can be a phenomenal coincidence that you get 2 of the most iconic cultural products in the century and they sync almost perfectly . I say perfectly cause you can have 5 or 6 syncs when you try to match a random album with a random movie. But over a hundred syncing points within the Dark Side of OZ is something else. Anyway it is a great master piece , the twister scene and than the movie turning colored right when Money begins to play. It's really amazing, no matter how was done.
I love it when people try to argue that there are "too many synchronicities" for it to have happened by chance. Oh? According to whom? Is there some universally agreed-upon mathematical table showing the exact number of "synchronicities" required to prove that it couldn't just be coincidence?
I wonder now since such a theory for this album has existed for so long. If any artists since have made an album that syncs with a specific film and let it go unnoticed as a super Easter egg. Anyone could do it for any film and nobody may ever know. Like what is To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar syncs up with some random film like Forest Gump or ShawShank Redemption
I've never tried using my own copies of the music and movie, but I have watched it on UA-cam which plays the album on loop until the movie ends. 10/10 🍄's. Would watch again.
During “somewhere over the rainbow” as Dorothy sings and on the run plays, if you’re listening with head/earphones, Dorothy looks from one side of the sky to another as the stereo mix goes from ear to another
How do you not mention that the Wicked Witch abruptly comes on screen AS SOON AS the clocks go off on Time, not to mention how when the movie turns to color, the cash register 'cha-ching' from Money hits. Those are insane coincidences. In fact, when the Wicked Witch came on screen with her bicycle, it scared the hell out of my dad and I. We both jumped. 😂 Those 2 synchronicities are easily the most stunning.
We were doing this back in the 80s with VCR tapes and CDs... Kicking back with the headphones on and having to watch your little brother or sister and the only way to keep them occupied was throwing some wizard of Oz because they would stay glued to the TV for a couple. 4 hours .. meanwhile you've got you Walkman or something on with some Pink Floyd can you just got done smoking a big fat joint life is good with your bowl of Cocoa pebbles in front of the TV with everybody occupied... You're in your happy little world and they're in their happy little world and everything is good..
It would be impossible for the band to have done it. I believe it's proof of something supernatural. What gives me that impression is how well the syncing is after the CD repeats. Perhaps supernatural abilities acquired by Syd? I like the mystery of it all.
Why would it be impossible? Surely you’re aware that musicians regularly score movies. I trust them when they said it was a coincidence, but calling it impossible to write music to accompany a film just seems to be a completely uninformed statement.
@@Charles2112pp but what I believe makes it supernatural is the number of connections to the movie after the album repeats. If you compose music to match part of a film understandable. But they would have piece together lyrics in such a way that one line matches an early part of the film then after the repeat lyrics arranged to perfectly match a later part of the movie. I wouldn't say impossible but that would force a songwriter to consider pieces of film that have a large gap between them chronologically and write music to match the separate pieces. For example the start of the album doesn't really match anything at the start of the film but on the 2nd playthrough you have the heartbeat and the sound of machinery as the tin man comes back to life. It's such a complicated scenario I have trouble explaining my thoughts in this comment! Lol However, since the obvious matching of Echoes to the end of 2001 space Odyssey is apparent, there is credibility to the belief that they were able to pull off the task of matching to wizard of Oz. If so, it's the greatest accomplishment in music history.
@lordgoogoo539 that was my sentiments about it. I would want to take credit for such a feat. As someone who has watched it a few time that way, it blew my mind how spot on and in accordance with the film the music is. That is the best way to watch it, IMO. Though I still like both independent of each other.
Back in the day we had The Wall on with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the dinner scene lined up perfectly. I don't remember the song and we certainly didn't start it at a specific part, it was all just an accident.
I acknowledge that the rational, scientific explanations for such coincidences are often valid, and I genuinely get irritated by how some people go too far with conspiracy theories and see patterns that really aren’t present, however, I have experienced numerous coincidences, synchronicities, etc. that I can’t explain without accepting the existence of the supernatural. Maybe the Dark Side of the Rainbow thing is just a coincidence, but maybe some coincidences are the work of a supernatural source? Well, whatever the truth is, my favorite bit of the synch-up is when “Great Gig In The Sky” is playing. The whole piece matches perfectly, especially when the drums coincide exactly with Dorothy doing a little skipping hop movement in reaction to a tree flying at her amid the chaos of the “twister”. After the window in her bedroom breaks and she’s hit by its glass, the shot changes to a close-up of her head landing on her bed, and this is another instance of the music matching the movie. From there, it gets even better: when the house lands in Oz, Dorothy’s mouth is open, as if she’s exclaiming something like “Oh”, just as the vocals say “Oh”. Finally, as she slowly opens the door to reveal the transition from sepia to color, the song transitions to “Money”, which starts right when she’s about to step out (and onto the yellow brick road). And of course there’s more good bits in the rest of it, like how professor Marvel is strongly hinting that Dorothy is needed back home at the same time the lyrics are saying “home, home again”, but “Great Gig in the Sky” is the best part, in my opinion, because the entire piece works with the film from start to finish. When it doesn’t match up, it’s disappointing, because there’s so many moments when it’s perfect. I don’t think it was done intentionally by the band, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s pure accident.
two more things about the trouble with syncing this up: Different CD pressings of DSotM don't even sync up perfectly with each other. Each remaster/remix has a different transfer from analog tape and different speed corrections applied. different home video versions of Wizard Of Oz will differ slightly, since movies are made of individual 20 minute reels of film, and sometimes the changeover is off by a couple frames from remaster to remaster.
So, fun fact: Stanley Kubrick actually contacted Floyd about taking their song Atom Heart Mother and sinking it up to A Clock Work Orange. They said "no" after they found out Kubrick admitted that he didn't really have any idea of what to do with it. This is even more erie because of the Echoes/2001 sequence.
I tried this a couple of years ago when Wizard of Oz was on TV I played the album on the third lion roar and I didn't find a single thing from the album where the music matched up with moments from the movie
There is a copy of the movie on youtube that has the Pink Floyd album synched up for you. It works well. Unfortunately the video freezes at ~ 58 minutes so the last part of the film is not viewable. It was fun to watch but in my opinion if Alan Parsons says it did not happen intentionally then that is the definitive answer. Thank you for this vid it was a nice treatment. Peaceful Skies
Not sure if anyone needs to hear this, but the 1995 issue of Wizard on VHS still works with the third roar sync. Doesn’t matter that the lion is in color.

@MicheleZaitz that's the one I seen it's absolutely amazing
The Great Gig in the Sky fits perfectly with the Twister scene.
Or any cataclysm.
Hauntingly, it does... the hair on my arms and legs stands straight up every time I watch it.
yes and then the home crashes as the music does and the film turns from B+W to Color as "Money" cash register starts.
This is definitely one of the most prominent ones, I was surprised he didn't mention it in the part about the scenes that especially sync up well!
It’s REALLY just coincidence. I’ve seen my ex playing Street Fighter while listening to Megadeth and there’s times where that synchs so perfectly that it’s almost as if it was planned, but wasn’t.

Coincidence or not it's still very cool and good fun!

No.
Omgg
It predates the mid 90's, my buddy's older brother played it for us when we were in high school back in the late 80's. He was home for the weekend from college, where he saw it. Only difference was we used vinyl instead of a CD and had to pause the VHS to flip the record lol.
Edit: btw, he started it on the second roar, so that's how I've always done it. Now I wanna see if there's much difference between that and doing it on the third.
Gotta love college students. They think up and spread news of some cool stuff.
I agree. We heard about it in 89 and did it with a cassette and VHS.
Yeah, I thought it pre-dated the 90s too.
I have always started the music with the second roar from the cowardly lion.
We did this in college back in 85, much earlier than is referenced in the history 4:05
🤷♂️ sorry.
IKR?
Agreed, and "Money" absolutely blew my mind. That "cha-ching"...
Great analysis
Dark Side synchs up twice. And yes it's way too much to be coincidence.
Oh yeah... I recall that back soon after the album came out. I had friends do that exact thing, but I never actually did.
Na that's when money starts

I remember doing this from CD and vhs tape.. It’s stunning on how this s album can match with what goes on screen.
I remember doing it before there even was the Internet.
I heard about this from stoners way back in the ‘70s, who said that you’re supposed to start the record when the movie changes from B&W to color!

You're talking about VHS and Betamax but you forget about Laserdisc.

If you havent actually watched it for yourself you're missing out. I dont think it works past the first play, but the synchronicities are crazy.
The bigger question is, do we write albums and stories to an underlying structure causing so much match up?
I could believe it. We are very subconscious creatures
I think when you start adding structure to things, it's bound to happen.

The Echoes/2001 thing not only works better but might be better than the movie soundtrack.

I don’t think it was done intentionally by the band, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s pure accident.
two more things about the trouble with syncing this up:
Different CD pressings of DSotM don't even sync up perfectly with each other.
This is even more erie because of the Echoes/2001 sequence.
apparently the heist in Jabba's Palace in "Return of the Jedi" syncs up with Led Zeppelin debut album
When Wizard of Oz came on tv once a year you would get your record ready to start. Trippy.
I tried this a couple of years ago when Wizard of Oz was on TV I played the album on the third lion roar and I didn't find a single thing from the album where the music matched up with moments from the movie
😂 ...when it was on TV
Dark side of Oz. I use to make and sell these tapes in my High School AV class back in the early 2000's. It really does sync up on so many moments.
This was a thing way before the 90s. Radio stations used to set up showings in the 80s when I was a teenager.
Vinyl actually works better than CD.
It may be coincidence...but SYNCH in this life is real.
The last lyrics tell you to flip the album over. The instruments become the emotion of the characters.
Such a silly conspiracy but I love it
Yeah, and if you play "I'm a Walrus" backwards, you can hear them saying "Paul is dead..."
Not sure if anyone needs to hear this, but the 1995 issue of Wizard on VHS still works with the third roar sync. Doesn’t matter that the lion is in color.
