Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
    Holy Roller
    Stand
    To the left of me
    In paradise
    Holy Ghosts will
    Born of blood
    In seraphim
    To grip the Nazarene
    Crown of God
    You wear it thin
    To come and rapture me
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
    Stand
    To the left of me
    In paradise
    Holy Ghosts will
    Fade
    Into oblivion
    Like a blade
    Falling slowly
    Curse the holy down
And when I die, you won't pray for me
    That's when…

I thought this was fairly obvious, but I suppose one could interpret it as an attack on all Christianity, but I saw it as a shot at charlatans who exploit faith for personal gain, power, or control, y'know, how the term "holy roller" originated. The duality of the beautiful message they put up front, and the hideous intent behind all of it.

If we wanted to make it an umbrella term, essentially it means Someone who manipulates others to fulfill their own desires under the guise of spiritual or religious guidance.
Christians often pray specifically to do God's Will and not their own because they understand how easy it is to fall into this trap.

I think the visuals 100% serve a purpose here. It is a pretty accurate depiction of the "holly rollers". They present a facade a goodness/holiness/grace, however you don't have to dig too deep to find pure evil. In the end, the demon version appears to completely swallow the beautiful facade. It is very accurate and very powerful.

  • @Galedan-C1029

    From KillYourStereo
A “holy roller” often best describes an over-zealous member of evangelical Christian groups, the kind that display their religious ecstasy by overblown frenzied excitement, shaking their bodies violently and falling all over the place. ‘Holy Roller‘ itself is littered with nods towards Christianity - references to Nazareth, seraphims (angels), fall from graces, paradises, blood being turned into wine, take-of-my-body-this-bread, etc. - and is based around the idea, or at least the image, of faith. Though from where I’m standing, the song seems more like a condemnation of those who poison the well for others in order to arbitrarily and selfishly advance their own spirituality points. Whether through bigotry, ignorance, social exclusion, empty gestures, riches or other means. I think it’s all found in the songs opening line: “Holy roller sits in the garden we fled“; those who just want paradise all to themselves, and damn whoever they must step over in order to achieve it. As the song later states, when you die, they sure won’t pray for you. Metaphor or not, ‘Holy Roller‘ is in some form about the monstrous ways that selfishness and callousness in people can manifest towards others; how we must cut such individuals out, less they drag us down.

Kiddo, Holy Rollers are the folks that ruin it for everyone else. These are the people that preach the Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames. The lyrics make sense.

I dont know where i would go to say this where it would be seen, but its something ive wanted to get off my chest for so long and i feel comfortable here since ive watched a number of your music and lyric analysis videos. I guess i want to say, i left religion behind when i was young, maybe 15 years ago in my early teens, before i feel i even developed a faith in anything.. its been buried away for so long and ive accepted it as my normal. Ive spent so much of my life being a hardcore atheist, until i mellowed out into my late 20s.I listen to metal that span from each end of the lyrical spectrum, from religious to vehemently anti-religious. Ive enjoyed many bands with overt lyrics about faith, like Impending Doom, For Today, and the like. Ive noticed that sometimes when i confront music about Christ or His love or redemption... i feel something, like something that evokes me deep in my core thats positive and pure that eases me. I cant properly describe but it lasts briefly. Its not an emotion, but something that lifts the burden off of my soul for just a few moments, before i return to myself. I tried to write it off, many times. Every time it happens some voice in me grows stronger and makes me wonder if this is His way of trying to reach out to me or if its something im just making up. I dont know if others can relate, but its conflicting and weighed on me for a while. Im sure this will get buried in the posts but i wanted to get it out there.

So I got a question for Robert with relation to Catholics and what I heard from a Catholic radio video on UA-cam...
A catholic radio host talks about how Protestants are wrong with the “sola fide” and bring up the book of James as a rebuttal, saying that faith without works is dead.
Would you say they’re wrong or misled by what they believe about those who believe in faith alone?

    • @drpepsi48
      @drpepsi48 4 роки тому

Nick A. Although I’m not Robert, as another Protestant I can provide a rebuttal to their point. I think we can all agree that since the Bible is the Word of God, it does not contradict itself. Other parts of the Bible (Ephesians 2:9, for example) explicitly say that it is not through works we are saved, but by faith. Therefore the interpretation must be incorrect, I understand why they would incorrectly interpret James’ words, but I’ve found an answer for what James is saying here. What James means when he says that faith without works is dead, is that when someone says they are a true Christian, but they don’t commit genuinely good works and are just unrepentant bad people, they aren’t a Christian. Good works are the fruit of faith, the side effect of redemption, not the cause of it. If the side effects are not present, then the cause is not.

By contrast to that, songs about your personal responsibility for yourself as an autonomous being are just not scary at all. That's what actual Satanists are about, if you read Crowley etc it's sort of enlightenment seeking in Buddhist sense but with Western magic imagery. Which they label Satan because that's who Christians blamed magic on. And like all religion to get the adherents shunned by the rival cult lol. People who sacrifice animals etc are just jerks. I believe in an interview Courtney inferred that it’s kinda just a song written to be just heavy, and that the lyrics are just something written to support the heavy vibe. They wanted to just write a really heavy song to put in the middle of their in progress album to kinda just slap people with the heavy by surprise. Their “normal” sound is much more a mix of clean and scream vocals.

Please, React to: Sabaton - The Last Stand
Is a band that sings about historical events
This particular song tells the story of the 189 brave soldiers in the Swiss guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527. Since Charles V, ruler of the holy roman empire couldn’t pay his troops they mutinied and forced their commander to lead them towards Rome where plunder was plentiful. When the invading force entered the vatican pope Clement VII escaped to Castel Sant’Angelo via passetto di Borgo. The few remaining guardsmen gave their lives on the steps to St. Peters Basilica.

The singer and screamer Courtney has said this is song is about people who use religion to manipulate and control others. The visuals however are a omage to a horror movie called Midsommar released in 2019. It's about a couple travel to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Where in the movie they manipulate those around then until either they believe or when they commit any form of blasphemy are promptly killed off.

There is one other mention of a seraphim in leviticus 23. The sacrifice of two goats, one to God and the lesser one to be the wilderness to be swallowed by azazel, who is a seraphim.

EVPs are silly. But so is believing in god. But if it helps people or gives them hope or makes them feel better about certain things then I'm fine with it. I only take issue with it when I see people feeling guilty or being scared or it being used to scam or manipulate people.

And there is a scientific belief that since everything has energy and frequency, the evp boxes are suppose to tune into the same frequency as ghosts or spirits this allowing them to speak directly to people through the spirit box !

If you enjoyed, please check out their other stuff aswell - you guys won't regret! With or without a video, that's your decision, but just listen to them :) I enjoyed listening to your discusion afterwards as always. And I liked that you also had a look at the lyrics! Spiritbox is killing it right now. Their style and approach for releasing music is very unique. Holy Roller really counts to their more heavier songs, no, it definitely is the heaviest song they've released yet. Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer, also husband and wife, created this project "Spiritbox" in 2016/2017 after their former band iwrestledabearonce (IWABO) disbanded (and yea, they did some other stuff there which is worth checking out aswell). In general, they deliver the perfect mix of heavy and melodic. Courtney's voice and vocal range is amazing, she's not only able to scream and growl like in Holy Roller - you will be surprised for sure. Everything they produce is perfectly going together, melodic and heavy tuned riffs, groovy bass lines, beautiful and harsh vocals. I think their song "Rule of Nines" is a perfect introduction to get a nice overview for Spiritbox - you should check that one out! Always there to give you some insights and more information about the band if you want to! Hope to see you in the next one including Spiritbox again - I'll be there! Cheers!

Thank you for reviewing this one, I recently discovered this band and I just can't get enough, I absolutely love Courtney's vocals. However as a believer in Christ, I do confess that this song does indeed rock!, but it makes my discernment alarm go off. I don't really understand the meaning of the lyrics and have been curious about a pastors opinion. Thanks for doing this. For the record, if this is all you did listen to from them, she also sings very pretty in other songs, my favorite by the band is called Rule Of Nines, where she both sings beautifully and growls. Your "It Is Finished" shirt is awesome, btw!
