One of the best portrayals of a realistic alcoholic going through realistic physical and mental anguish due to withdrawal. Such a departure from the normal "witty, tragic-comedic" portrayal of a drunkard in a western or action film. I believed every bit of what Martin portrays. Amazing movie.
Dean martin did the best acting of his life in this one too. I met Claude Akins at a car show in Seattle years after this movie was made. He said Dean did stuff that no one thought he was capable of doing, before they brought in the stunt man.
The Searchers, Red River and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon offered his best performances as an actor. Red River was also directed by Howard Hawks. Hawks is very under appreciated as a director. Never won an Oscar.

My most beloved movie. Duke should have gotten an Oscar for this.
Couldn’t tell you why he didn’t I always found it to be better than True Grit by a mile

Dean Martin had so much incredible talent.
This brings back so many memories. It's sad we have only one life.
It's so short.
He made the most of it. He also brought joy to millions. I still play his Christmas album every Christmas eve.
@@whiskeybuilder6335I'm sure you know, if not, what also makes it so special is the fact that he too passed on Christmas Day.
That's just, one of the most fantastic openings to a movie ever. That first few minutes, with no dialog, is almost balletic.
My cousin was a good ballet dancer.

It's so fucking confusing
Such acting. Dean hit a home run with this character
Un clásico Y la mejor película.
Dean was a natural actor-he played a drying out boozer so convincingly.
Method acting
Amo esta pelicula desde mi juventud
This was the film john Wayne should have got his oscar for.

I totally agree with you. I simply love this film and he was absolutely great
The Searchers I think.
The Searchers, Red River and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon offered his best performances as an actor. Red River was also directed by Howard Hawks. Hawks is very under appreciated as a director. Never won an Oscar.
The Searchers? Who Shot Liberty Valance? True Grit? I think he won for The Shootist.
EINER DER BESTEN WESTERN ÜBERHAUPT
Love the way the barman looks at Claud Akins with total disgust knowing full well he’s gonna cause aggro.🤣

I always liked Claude Akins but liked him better when he played good guys.
Good guys, bad guys, it didn't matter. Claude Akins always played them to perfection. Sad we don't have actors of his caliber today.

Can't enjoy a film with John Wayne knowing he was a racist!
Gaz willz my advice to you would be to lighten up. This damn racist shit is getting a little out of control.
@@jamesbomar3903 lighten up?
That was the problem. Wayne did not care much for Dark people.😉

Everyone was a racist back then. It was a different time. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy a good movie.
