I wonder what would happen if we parked a large satellite with a large reflector and directed sunlight into a deep crater that has tons of ice in it. Would it heat it up enough to melt it then send little rovers down to sample it!!!
I’d think that’d just convert the ice into a gaseous state that’d either re-condense as frost or escape into space

@@elonmuskceospaceX I am from California. Elon musk did not just respond to me. But I would believe it if he got me tickets to the show on Friday. I think this is gonna be the one. I would love to watch this historical event in person, but I will surely be waking up at 4:30 to watch it in the cold darkness on my computer screen. WHOOP!
When you think about the pace of recent developments it almost seems crazy that none of this happened after the moon landing. I'm glad it's happening now when I can enjoy following along though. Very exciting time to be alive and interested in space! 🚀 🧑🚀👩🚀 🌕
It makes me wonder where we would be now, though, had NASA done these things at that time. What wonders and excitations might we be witness to today in that case...
@@FlyingGerbylBut you also have to take "no shuttle" into account - based on the budgets at the time, you can have one or the other but not both.
Now, there's an argument that keeping Saturn IIB in production with Apollo derived crew capsules (no rovers) to service a Skylab-like series of Earth orbit stations would have been a better use of funds and development resources. Run a similar Mercury-Gemini-Apollo R&D effort instead of building a final system first as with Shuttle, using the heritage Apollo system and upgrades of Apollo to bridge the decade plus before LEO on partly reuseable hardware is proven...
They definitely could’ve done better. But, sadly, the aim was to win a race, not build a foundation for the future.
A substantial of the recent advancement is only possible because of powerful computer simulations. It would not have been possible in the 1970s or even 1990s.

I am always the optimist as it all depends on what you consider a “success”… but I also believe the fragments from the 4:20 launch cause a lot of the first launch failures. So I will go out on a limb as say complete success with booster operations, stage separation and then the cooler affect kicks in and the rest of the mission goes foggy. This type of reentry is extremely tough… I feel like many tiles will be lost and then how does the stainless steel body hold up with friction velocities this intense.

It just might, they just got the launch license a few hours ago but scrubs are a regular thing unfortunately in the industry :(

With the cargo weight and size improvement with starship, someone has to be working on bigger and heavier rovers, I mean you could transport a huge rover on starship
I’d imagine that there’s probably a maximum practical size for a rover
I have one question though, I was hoping someone would answer it, what happens after this starship is a successful launch?
My best guess would be that they keep working hard on the R&D and keep testing and launching Starships. You're most likely not going to see people on Starships for quite some time until SpaceX has a zero failure rate. As I mentioned above, they need to push the R&D, and currently, the raptor engines need improvement to have a higher success rate.
Probably have to wait for the next FAA decision on another flight which seems to take a long time. Perhaps giving Space X competition a chance to catch up.........
If the launch is a 100% succes (which is very unlikely) we might even see the next pairing, Ship 28 and Booster 10 fly as soon as December since the FAA would practically have nothing on their plates to do.
A Friday launch would be an amazing birthday gift! I hope it pans out well and if not, ad astra per aspera

Stowed on the descent stage of the Lunar Module, the LRV extended the range of astronaut EVA activities by several kilometers beyond the landing site), NASA reveals the Lunar Rover! Well that's quite an accomplishment, I'd say 😄

Let's hope the Vulcan flight #1 is a success. They aren't flying a payload simulator, but instead an actual lander. It would be a shame to lose it.
As for Starship, I just hope that we don't have too many engines go out on liftoff. As long as booster has sufficient thrust to put the system on a good trajectory, I am betting hot-staging works fine. The Titan 2 rocket used it successfully as well as a number of Russian launch vehicles. If they make it through stage separation and the Starship engines start well and go to full thrust, the odds look good. Even if some tiles come off, the stainless steel structure of Starship is much more robust than aluminum, so I am betting the ship will make it through the atmosphere. I actually hope SpaceX makes an effort to recover the booster from the top of the ocean to see if the top dome survives the hot-staging ignition without too much damage. That is a piece of info worth gathering.

Times have changed, and the revitalized manned moon missions do not have the same sense of excitement or commitment as during the Apollo missions. The lackluster approach this time gives a sense of complacency and bureaucratic irrelevance. This time, with several nations focused on the moon, there is a high probability of people going to the moon and not coming back!
Why do you use only use the metric system? Why cant you say ft or farhenheit too? Not everyone knows the metric system we were not raised on it.

Maybe they didn't want to put a radioactive power supply for a rover on the moon? I imagine to power a rover directly or even a hybrid with batteries charge by the nuclear power source it would require quite a large unit. Is there an international agreement about not putting radioactive materials on the moon?

So NASA builds Voyager one and two in the 70s that still work. 50 years later in absolut zero but they can't build a rover that can survive 14 days cold on the moon 🤪😆

It's almost like the Voyagers were intended to roam the stars, and the rover just needs to be good enough to complete a week long mission.
I imagine that there is a bit of heat being generated by their MHW-RTG power source. Perhaps, that heat is enough to keep the parts from freezing up?
@@FlyingGerbyl That too. I doubt the Lunar Rovers that are meant to be operated by people are powered by Plutonium-238 like the Voyager Probes are.
The voyagers are heated by their nuclear hearts and to a lesser extent, the faint sunlight and background radiation.
Hopefully someone in there has the brains to make a wheel that will last a couple miles.

Bbbbbut NASA didn't have any battery problems with those extreme temperatures during Apollo. Just take some fresh batteries and use the dune buggy they left on the moon. Unless they lost that too. I guess it's possible.
Anyone know how much human wastes three men produce over eleven days? They would need a 55 gal drum to contain it. Now get out the blueprints and show us where that drum was situated. On the lander or the capsule. Unless they just opened a hatch and tossed it. Lol nobody went to the moon quit lying about it only children believe you.
